but a question (i’m sure it’s discussed somewhere else, but i couldn’t find it): why wasn’t paul there when ringo, olivia and yoko accepted that prize for the beatles? i read he had rehearsals somewhere else, but that he couldn’t even drop in for a photo or something? is he at odds with somebody again?

Offline I was quite disappointed to learn Paul and Ringo only played together on two songs at last night’s tribute 50th anniversary show. I was also pained that one of the songs, was With A Little Help From My Friends , which was what they played a few years ago, at another David Lynch event.
Having said that, I am hopeful, that the tv special and concert, is just one of many event’s and releases for 2014 to celebrate the Beatles 50th anniversary. I have heard quite a bit of talk and rumor, from usually reliable inside people, that the third Beatles reunion song Now And Then , could be released in finished condition, perhaps along with other special tracks, perhaps things like Carnival Of Light or Sour Milk Sea, or unknown takes and songs from the Get Back /Let It Be project. It is also known, although it was not shown in the DVD’s that Paul Ringo and George did play I Saw Her Standing There , Roll Over Beethoven , and Love Me Do (with Ringo on vocal for the latter) during that jam.
Wogblog said directly, no hemming or hawing, that a video collection of the Beatles 1 album would be released towards the end of the year. That is accompanying videos for the 27 number one hits originally released on that album. I wonder if possibly, just a guess now, if a new video featuring Now And Then , might be possibly be included as a bonus, incentive for that video album. Just a guess no inside info on my part.
Would it really have killed Paul and Ringo, to get up and just play four or five early Beatles songs, to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary, maybe something like, I Wanna Be Your Man and Matchbox from Ringo, and I Saw Her Standing There , Can’t Buy Me Love and And I Love Her from Paul, something along those lines, then close with Pepper and Hey Jude , what the heck, seems Beatles songs from 63-64 would have been more appropriate given the nature of the occasion.

Offline * Per the Examiner, Paul and Ringo are confirmed for appearing on David Letterman for an interview. Also, it looks like Paul had to be convinced to take part in last night’s Grammy celebration:
Billboard said a source confirmed that McCartney originally wasn’t in favor of being involved in the concert to pay tribute to the Fab Four, and didn’t decide until mid-January after talking to two Americans in his inner circle that he should do the show.

Offline Paul and Ringo’s material was the bog-standard stuff (skimmed down) from their live shows and it was disappointing reading what they performed. As written elsewhere i was hoping Ringo would be the only one playing drums with Pauls, i don’t think he even played alongside Abe.
And channel 4 cut Ringo’s performance from their highlights show.

* Last night I went to the Grammy Museum presentation by Bruce Spizer on the story of The Beatles coming to America. Really funny and insightful. We learned more about the role of Vee Jay Records, Capitol’s resistance to promoting them and the role of a 15-year-old girl from Silver Springs, MD in getting them airplay. And I got my book signed. He’s going to be at the Fest for Beatles Fans, so if you get a chance to see him, do!

Yeah, he had an exhibit recently, I remember posting about it here. And he attended Patti’s reception here (which I had to miss, grrr). He has a really nice sense of composition.

Well, that pretty much kills any hopes that I had of Ringo performing onstage without the aid of another drummer. It’s not that he’s the only one who does it, Phil Collins always played with Chester Thompson during Genesis and his own shows, for much the same reason that he alternates between fronting and drumming, except that Phil will also play on his own for other occasions. I just didn’t like how Abe Laboriel, Jr. was in the shadows (literally) during the Grammy performance yet I could clearly hear his drums over Ringo’s. Ringo wasn’t audible to my ears still he had the bright lights shining on him, to say that he was “air-drumming” wouldn’t be much of an exaggeration really. There’s a couple times where Ringo crashes his cymbal and you can see it wobble, but you can’t really hear the hit. The more I think about it Ringo shouldn’t have played on ‘Queenie Eye ‘ at all, after all, Paul didn’t play on ‘Photograph’ so why put Ringo out there just for the sake of putting him “out there”? This isn’t the “Out There” tour! It probably would’ve created more anticipation for the upcoming 50th Anniversary TV Special had they just teased us with the two solo performances. I think that the Grammys have taken a little something away from the mystique of seeing Paul & Ringo onstage together again, I guess that there are many who (just like the old days) want to simply see them onstage together, whereas I personally want to see and hear them perform together again…:-)

Offline Maybe it was a late on decision to have Ringo play with Paul. Paul therefore just picks a song for his band and Ringo joins in, not fully aware of what the drum parts were. There are moments when it looked to me that Ringo didn’t know what he was meant to be playing and so would look over at Abe to see what he was up to, would also account for the low mix given to his drums.
All complete conjecture on my part.

Offline Are these special magazine editions any good? The last few i’ve looked at in shops, including the one above which i saw in Glasgow today, have seemed to be your regular Beatles story that pays more attention to the early days than the later period alongside some photo’s which whilst nice and glossy seem to be nothing new.
Maybe they are not meant to be aimed at folks like me who wants a different angle but at your more general reader or at the aunties who buy magazines for the niece/nephew as a present the nice time they meet.

Its been rumoured for a while, they were reported to be getting released last year but nothing came of it. I wonder if eventually there the US albums also released on vinyl as well, wouldn’t be a surprise if they are.
