Why are making all the original Capitol Beatles albums on CD such a big deal to people. I was well into my 20’s before I even realized that Yesterday and Today wasn’t a real Beatles album! But once I got hip to the offical UK discography I never looked back. Now I understand some audiophiles and collectors think the Capitol albums sound better, which seems crazy to me. But that aside, whats the attraction? Memories, duplicates of what you had when you were 17? The one good thing I would say about the Capitol albums, instead of 13 Beatles studio albums, you get more albums with the Capitol albums, extra albums, but they removed good songs to do that, weakening the original albums! So why do people want these? I’m not being sarcastic I really don’t know why people want them.

Rose-tinted spectacles? There may be a few that have music or song versions not available on the usual LPs; I haven’t seen the listings but do some of the early films have some of George Martin’s incidental music? Other than that, some rabid collectors might want the different liner notes and artwork.

The United Artist A Hard Days Night LP had George Martin orchestral scores of some of the tracks eg This Boy (Ringo’s Theme) (maybe its the other way round). Capitol’s Help ! had Ken Thorne’s incidental music.
I suppose the US albums have value as in they are the lp’s that helped break the US and maintain the love affair it’s had with the Beatles, and many folks grew up listening and adoring them, but aside for the alternate mixes some of the albums contain they are pretty irrelevant outside of America.
Its a natural step for Apple as there is a decent sized customer base that will very happily folk out for them and its not going to do any harm to the brand (critics cant heavily complain over the albums being released). Hopefully one day this will lead to the Christmas messages being made available but i doubt it.
I thought about getting the Capitol boxes a number of times but in the end it wasn’t worth the money for a few different mixes that are out there on bootleg. Create the playlists and save a fortune.

From The Examiner:
Singer Sinead O’Connor, who appeared at the Bob Dylan 30th Anniversary concert at Madison Square Garden on Oct. 16, 1992, announced on Dec. 6 the concert is coming to DVD and Blu-ray for the first time next year and also on CD with bonus tracks.
She said Sony has contacted her about the release and said that one of her songs done the day before the concert will be put on CD as a bonus track.
The list of performers at this show were amazing. They included Johnny Winter, Neil Young, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Tracy Chapman, Eric Clapton, Eddie Vedder, John Cougar Mellencamp, George Harrison , Johnny Cash and wife June Carter Cash, Ron Wood, Kris Kristofferson, Roger McGuinn, the Band, and, of course, Bob Dylan.
More at the link. I imagine Sony didn’t want that leaking out just yet, but bless her.

[Couple of reposts in here due to the migration loss.]
*WogBlog (1 and 2) and Examiner (1 and 2) articles on the US Album releases.
* LA Times article on the Beatles NYC 50 celebration.
* From SF Gate:
Jim Marshall, the San Francisco photographer who captured some of the most famous moments in Rock ‘N’ Roll history, will receive a trustees award at the Grammys next month, the Recording Academy said Thursday.
[*snip*]
Some of Marshall’s best-known shots include Johnny Cash raising his middle finger at San Quentin State Prison in 1969, the Beatles walking across the field to their final concert at Candlestick Park in 1966 and Janis Joplin lounging backstage with a bottle of Southern Comfort at the Winterland Ballroom in 1968.
Marshall died in 2010.
* And a recap, for the sake of posterity… My video for Paul’s track “Appreciate” got featured on his Facebook, Twitter and Google + sites on Tuesday the 10th. And the Macca Report did a great write-up on it (it’s a different angle from the previously reported The Examiner article).

The Beatles Bootleg Recordings 1963 has gone up on iTunes New Zealand (according to WogBlog) and iTunes Australia (verified by our own trcanberra). Both entered the 17 December several hours ago. This would indicate that there is a worldwide iTunes rolling out of these 59 unreleased tracks is happening over the next few hours.
The price for the full set is appearing very reasonable as well. NZ iTunes has the set for $15.99, with each individual track at $2:39. Australian iTunes are pricing it a little cheaper a $15.50 and $2.20. (Obviously the dollar mark here refers to their dollar.)
This would appear to indicate that as the set becomes available, the set is going to be very reasonably priced, and if early reports are correct, tracks are an upgrade on their previous bootlegged versions.
No knowing how long this set will be available, so I would recommend it while you can.

Yes indeedy, and I did a little rounding – the prices were 15.49 and 2.19 . Our dollar is a bit higher than the NZ one, hence our price. Works out to about US$14 – so a great price – even if they are .mp4s (not .mp3s nowadays I notice).
I have no idea what rate Apple (you know, the other Apple) has encoded these at, hopefully as high as they can with the format – which I understand could even be lossless – though the files don’t seem quite large enough for that – around 300MB – which seems larger than .mp3 would be at 320 kbps.

Heather Mills is in the news accused of harrassment (does a Beatle’s ex-wife deserve mention on here?).

^ When things like that happen, I wonder what John would think of it. I like it, anyway. I feel an odd sort of pride.
I think John would be made up. He did believe in extra-terrestrial life anyway, his spotting of the UFO one night outside his apartment in New York being the one that comes to mind (“there’s UFO’s over New York and I ain’t too surprised”). A Beatles Examiner article on it as well.
