* From WogBlog:

This in from Alejandro Barranco, an unedited single camera version of Some Other Guy from the Cavern Club, and as a bonus, the rest of the known footage edited to the recent find of Kansas City .

The crude, grainy footage features John Lennon and Paul McCartney singing the song’s melody in unison on Wednesday 22nd August 1962. This is also the first film of Ringo Starr as the Beatles drummer, Pete Best having been discharged the week before.

McCartney stated: “Some Other Guy” is a great song…It really got us started because that’s one of the earliest bits of film of The Beatles. It was the song we sang when Granada Television came to The Cavern. It was also a bit of a muso song…”

For more on this, you should go and visit Beatlesource.com

* Julian’s new album comes with a documentary, “Through the Picture Window,” and there’s a sneak peek here.

* The cinematographer for A Hard Day’s Night , Gilbert Taylor, has passed. From The Examiner:

A Hard Day’s Night ” DIRECTOR OF PHOTOGRAPHY DIES: Gilbert Taylor, who was director of photography for “A Hard Day’s Night ”, and also worked on “Star Wars,” “Dr. Strangelove” and “The Omen” in his long career, has died at age 99, the BBC reported Aug. 23. Taylor told American Cinematographer magazine in 2006 the difficulties of shooting the train station scene. “There was very little lighting of any sort, as the authorities would not allow us to control the station in any way. We also had a very limited budget and couldn’t afford generators, so any fill was coming from a small, handheld, battery-powered lamp. They wouldn’t have let us bring generators or cables onto the platform anyway.”

Also, in Liverpool, two events honoring George:

“MY SWEET GEORGE”: Two Beatles week events in Liverpool this weekend will honor George Harrison . Tonight, Joey Molland from Badfinger and others will do a musical tribute at the city’s Philharmonic Hall. An art exhibition in tribute to George Harrison will be held Sunday at the Adelphi Hotel, reports the British Beatles Fan Club.

On Breakfast with the Beatles this morning, Jackie DeShannon said there’s a possibility of Paul performing at Dodger’s Stadium next year.

Edit: The Examiner posted about the story.

Beatles Examiner reports that comments made by Harry Styles (he of One Direction) of becoming bigger than the Beatles were cut from a documentary for fear of offending the surviving Beatles.

So many people have claimed they were going to be as big or bigger than The Beatles I can’t imagine they’d be offended. I imagine Paul chuckling and then lovingly reviewing his bank statement.

Wogblog has a few more details on the sequel to the reportedly upcoming Live At The BBC (I have no idea where the thread for this album is so posted here).

I don’t know about the surviving Beatles, I’m midly offended that Harry whatsit thinks they are/will be bigger than the Beatles. That just further proves that he’s a silly little boy who doesn’t yet have much clue about anything. So many people have said something similar over the years, and they all look a bit stupid to me when they do. I know there’s other artists that were of similar quality, but I very much doubt a fresh-faced pop sensation will be bigger than the Beatles.

The comments will have been cut due to the stupidity of them and that everyone would be laughing at such a ridiculous statement. One Direction, whilst massive at the moment, are just another boyband on the manufactured treadmill who have a limited lifespan as well as zero credibility when it comes to appraising their music. In a decade’s time few will look back with any sadness at their passing or acclaim for their recording legacy.

Another photography auction. From the site:

Morrison Hotel Gallery is thrilled to partner exclusively with Antiquorum Auctioneers on Tuesday, October 8, 2013, delving deep into the photo archives of the gallery and offering one of the most complete photography auctions ever presented to the international community, presenting over 300 iconic images and unique items.

[…]

A special Artists as Photographers segment of the auction focuses on intimate moments as captured by the great artists themselves – Graham Nash of the Hollies and Crosby, Stills and Nash fly-on-the-wall photographs of Joni Mitchell, David Crosby and Neil Young; Chris Stein of Blondie inspired portraits of his muses Debbie Harry and Joan Jett; Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics creative takes of his co-creators Björk, Lou Reed with Laurie Anderson and Mick Jagger; and Julian Lennon’s portrait of his brother Sean Lennon and his favorite artists as well as his new box set of art from hisEverything Changes album.

Also included are photographs by Pattie Boyd, one of the first celebrity super models and former wife of George Harrison and Eric Clapton; and legendary audio producer Eddie Kramer’s intimate photographs of Jimi Hendrix behind the scenes at Electric Lady Studios.

Collectors of autographed photographs will be interested to see a special series of photographs created by Bill Bernstein during Paul McCartney ‘s 2002 world tour, each one signed by Paul McCartney . And even a special tribute to the beauty of the guitar itself is included in the auction, a box set of portraits of master luthier’s Four Season’s guitars by Jonathan Singer.

Bidding will be available in person, on-line, by absentee bid and by phone to collectors and the general public on October 8. The entire collection will be on preview October 3-5th and 7th at the Antiquorum Gallery at 595 Madison Avenue.

I feel like anything I post is going to pale in comparison to Paul having a new single out (thanks, DrBeatle!), but there are a couple of tidbits:

* A UK charity is auctioning tickets and a meet and greet to a Paul concert, and The Examiner is speculating on whether or not the concert would take place in the UK or Australia.

* At the Standard, via BeatlesNews, English Heritage has declined to put a blue plaque on Brian’s home.

“They told me that I could always apply again in another 10 years,” said [Geoffrey] Ellis. “But I’m an octogenarian. I’m hoping they might reconsider.” Ironically, Epstein’s biggest champion isn’t a particular fan of the Beatles. “I don’t really like pop music,” he confessed, “I prefer classical.”

It’s disappointing that they’re not putting up a plaque outside Brian’s home – again. As it said in the article, he bought in a lot of money to this country. I wonder what their reason is for saying no?
