Yoko Ono advocates peace through art in Harris exhibit

Yoko Ono is one of the most polarizing figures in the history of the Beatles. Fans of the fab four always have an opinion on the wife of John Lennon , not all of them positive. However, Ono and Lennon’s philanthropy and their fight for peace cannot be disputed.Their peaceful philosophies have been encapsulated in the traveling exhibition “Yoko Ono: Imagine Peace,” which opened ?Monday at the Harris Art Gallery. The exhibit displays many of Ono’s trademark artworks, showcasing the heavy avant-garde conceptual style that she so often works with throughout her pieces.“Yoko is one of the most influential conceptual artists in the world,” said Dion Johnson, director of University art galleries. “Her work with John and the ideals it brings up like peace… is something very fundamental to the University.”

Music Review: The Beatles – The Beatles with Tony Sheridan: First Recordings 50th Anniversary Edition

I admit, I’m very surprised to be so surprised by once again hearing the first tracks the Beatles laid down in Hamburg back in 1961 and '62. I can’t say how many times I’ve heard the eight songs produced by German bandleader Bert Kaempfert over the years, but I'd assumed I knew as much about them as any Beatles fan needed to know.I was dead wrong. It’s rather strange to report that while other countries have enjoyed full collections of variant versions of these records for decades, it took 50 years for U.S. listeners to get an “official” package of songs which were intended to launch the career of British singer and guitarist Tony Sheridan. True, a two-CD set with the same eight tracks repeated over and over in often very similar mixes is likely to interest only collectors, completists, and musicologists. But when it comes to the Fabs, there are plenty of us around even if we’re likely to give this collection serious attention just once before filing it away for archival purposes.

Julian Lennon on Personal and Professional Life

November 2011

With plenty of creative strings to his bow, Julian Lennon is keen to impress that, despite being the only child of Beatle John Lennon and his first wife Cynthia, he’s “more than a one-dimensional, son-of-John character”. The 8-year-old musician had a difficult relationship with his father, which included periods of estrangement before John was killed when Julian was 17. But as he points out: “There’s a lot more to my life and work than just Dad. ” Having just released Everything Changes, his first album in 13 years, Julian is a happy man. “It’s probably been the best response I’ve ever had,” he says. “I think people have seen a different side to me.”

Liverpool spending cuts threaten Beatles-themed Mathew Street festival

International festival and inward investment agency Liverpool Vision face axe as council slashes £102m from budget.
Spending cuts in Liverpool could lead to the cancellation of an internationally renowned music festival and funding being withdrawn for the inward investment agency, Liverpool Vision.Only three years after its triumphant Capital of Culture year, the most deprived city in England is being hard hit by local authority cuts, with savings of £102m needed over the next three years. Both public and private sectors are feeling the pain. Councillor Joe Anderson, leader of Liverpool city council, said he had suffered many sleepless nights contemplating the cuts, including proposals to ditch the Beatles-themed Mathew Street music festival.

Maybe We’re Amazed: Paul McCartney ’s Sensational Guitarists

Few artists have demonstrated a greater facility for scouting out great guitarists than Paul McCartney has. Having played in The Beatles, with one of rock’s finest lead guitarists and one of rock’s greatest rhythm players, Sir Paul no doubt entered his solo career with exceptionally high standards in mind. Although he’s often handled six-string duties himself – emphasizing songcraft over solos – his albums and live shows also have benefitted from contributions from exemplary rock-guitar craftsmen. The 10 players below rank among the best of those fortunate enough to have filled that role for the former Beatle

The unsigned ad said simply: “Drummer–Young–Free.”The letter was dated Aug. 12, 1960 — two years before the band bounced drummer Pete Best in favour of Ringo Starr .

Music for Screens: Fall 2011

When it came time for writer/director Jordan Galland to give his friend and musical colleague Sean Lennon instruction on scoring his indie film, “Alter Egos,” Galland recalls requesting “something that feels like ‘Twin Peaks’ at times and that feels like it’s harnessing the power of ‘The Dark Knight’ at times.”By then, Lennon adds with a laugh, Galland was already editing the comedy about superheroes who have fallen out of favor with the public, and “he’d just discarded 15 other cues that I’d worked on. And we only had four days to finish the score.”Lennon wholeheartedly embraced the challenge, even taking up the gauntlet to write a new tune, complete with lyrics, after Galland told him he planned to license an old song. “Sean was like, ‘C’mon man, we can totally write a song that sounds like it’s from the ’50s’,” Galland says of their one co-write on the project.

That tune, “My Hero,” joins 21 other cues composed by Lennon that span a wide array of musical styles from retro to noir to psychedelic to sweeping, tension-filled action. “It was a marathon,” Lennon says, who also played all the instruments on the tracks. Aside from the time crunch, the greatst difficulty was “making something that sounded like a big-budget superhero film with only my computer,”he adds.

Exhibition says oh yes to Ono’s work

IT may not look like much more than a postcard with a hole in the middle. But the work by John Lennon ’s widow Yoko Ono is one of 50 pieces of artwork selected for a special exhibition depicting beauty.Beholder is a collection that is being brought together under one roof at the Talbot Rice Gallery at Edinburgh University until February and features unique interpretations on what is considered beautiful. The idea came from the gallery’s principal curator Pat Fisher, who wanted to do something to mark the 300th anniversary of the birth of philosopher David Hume, who had very specific ideas about the perception of beauty.Ms Fisher wrote to colleagues in galleries across Scotland inviting them to suggest their own ideas for pieces that would fit the bill, with the result being a vast range of items from across the world, including Ono’s A Hole To See The Sky Through, which was selected by Kate Gray of the Collective Gallery in Edinburgh.

It’s hard to believe that we are coming up on the tenth anniversary of the tragic death of George Harrison .The former Beatle’s passing — at the premature age of 58 from lung cancer on Nov. 29, 2001 — came less than three months after the monumental 9-11 terrorist attacks, which may have somewhat overshadowed the importance of his untimely demise.

A music festival paying tribute to the Beatles in their hometown of Liverpool, England may be called off next year due to drastic austerity measures throughout the U.K. Liverpool's annual Mathew Street Music Festival has become a haven for Beatles fans but may be axed this year due to its £900,000 annual price tag.Supporters of the festival argue that it brings an estimated £17 million into the area's economy. According to Liverpool City Council leader Joe Anderson, it's a special year to remember the Beatles, but the cost could be too high in this economy:

Louise, George's sister, is writing a tell-all book about George. What more is there to tell? After she moved to America, how often did he see her? I don't think she will reveal any new information that we didn't already know.

I think there’s plenty she could say. She grew up with him, he was the first Beatle to visit the US because of her, and if nothing else I’d like to know more details about that trip. Read the comments on this page for some rather interesting snippets: https://www.beatlesbible.com/1…..y-america/

I believe that Louise also lived with George for a while in Hawaii after The Beatles split up. I saw her at some tribute concert a couple years ago and I remember her saying she was writing a book, so that's cool.a-hard-days-night-george-1

Flaming Lips promise epic New Year’s Eve Freakout shows in OKC

Just wanted to add that The Flaming Lips and Plastic Ono Band will perform side-by-side sets. This is an idea the Lips first tried out this summer with Weezer. I was at both of those shows and it made for a very interesting concert flow. I imagine it will work great at the freakout, as the Plastic Ono Band’s music will contextualize the Flaming Lips and vice versa… Also, The Flaming Lips will perform classic John Lennon covers with Sean Lennon and other members of The Plastic Ono Band at the Freak out, and at midnight they will sing “Happy Xmas (War Is Over)” with Yoko (more at – [psychexfutureheart (d0t) wordpress (d0t) c0m (backslash) freakout5tickets]) Speaking of which, besides “The Fear Litany,” for the past few days the Plastic Ono Band have also recording “Brain of Heaven” and a re-recording of “Atlas Eets Christmas” with The Flaming Lips. These are presumably for the Lips’ December release and one of which is possibly a holiday sequel to the Plastic Ono Band’s 1971 classic “Happy Xmas (War Is Over)” (details at [psychexfutureheart (d0t) wordpress (d0t) c0m 2011/11/24/ war- is- over]) Watch a sneak peak at Atlas Eets Christmas was originally released in 2007 on The Flaming Lips secret Christmas album. They’ve been streaming that entire album in a mix with all of their Christmas recordings non-stop since last weekend at a new website they made specifically for that purpose. More info at [psychexfutureheart (d0t) wordpress (d0t) c0m (backslash) 2011/11/28/ imagene-peise]There’s new updates to these everyday – follow at facebook/TheFutureHeart and twitter/FutureHeartDay

Yoko Ono coming to Delhi with art show

NEW DELHI: John Lennon had once described his wife as the “world’s most famous unknown artist. Everybody knows her name but no one knows what she actually does”. That is about to change as Yoko Ono, who has long been defined by her status first as a Beatle wife and then widow, gets ready for her first show in India. Yoko Ono, an avant-garde conceptual artist, has visited India with Lennon before but has never exhibited in the country. Now in a show, being billed as one of the hottest events to hit the capital’s art circuit, the 78-year-old will not only bring some of her cutting-edge works but also create a special installation for India. “I love India and the contribution it has made to philosophy and music,” Ono told TOI in an email interview. The show titled ‘Our Beautiful Daughters’ is being organized by Vadehra Gallery and will be held in Delhi from January 12.

Julian Lennon blames father John for his lack of children

John Lennon was such a bad father that he put his own son, Julian, off having children

Julian Lennon, 48, John Lennon ‘s son by his first wife, Cynthia, has revealed that his difficult relationship with his famous father has discouraged him from starting a family.Julian, who has never married, said that – unlike his father – he wanted to be mature enough to cope with fatherhood.“He was young and didn’t know what the hell he was doing,” Julian said. “That’s the reason I haven’t had children yet. I didn’t want to do the same thing. No, I’m not ready. I want to know who I am first.”Lennon’s comments, made in an interview with Record Collector magazine, are perhaps his most forthright yet about his relationship with his father.

Third time’s a charm, too: Minnesota Beatles Project Vol. 3 CD a winner

Singing Beatles songs and doing something nice for education is a winning combination. “The Minnesota Beatles Project, Vol. 3,” does both in one neat package. The Project, produced by Vega Productions, has, for three years running now, put out CDs with homegrown covers of Beatles songs, with all proceeds going to Minnesota education. It’s  collaborative effort with the Minnesota music industry to provide support for music and art programs in Minnesota public schools.
