Interesting bit about US copyright law, but it has to noted that it only refers, and can only refer, to copyright in the North American market. It will not affect any other place. And, if it stands, it would have the same effect for the Lennon estate.

”* Article on some of Paul’s collaborators on his new album.
Sir Paul McCartney has teamed up with Giles Martin, son of The Beatles producer Sir George Martin, as well as Adele’s producer Paul Epworth and Sir Tom Jones collaborator Ethan Johns for his new album.”
I had to read that three times before I saw it said ”Ethan Johns” instead of what I thought, ”Elton John”

From The Examiner:
Dave Schwensen, the author of “The Beatles In Cleveland: Memories, Facts & Photos About The Notorious 1964 & 1966 Concerts,” told Beatles Examiner Aug. 13 he has turned to Kickstarter for a campaign to fund his book of the Beatles ’65 Shea Stadium concert, which he plans to have out this fall.

* New York Times article on a business venture to expose younger people to The Beatles
As Paul McCartney closed the Grammy Awards last year with an all-star Beatles medley, Owen Husney, a veteran music executive, read Twitter in horror. In one message after another, young people asked a question that could give a baby boomer a heart attack: “Who is Paul McCartney ?!”
“I was so angry,” said Mr. Husney, who is best known as one of Prince’s first managers. “But I realized it was only natural. There is a whole audience born around 1990 that knows the Beatles, but is wholly unfamiliar with their writing.”
In response, Mr. Husney has teamed with a small music publisher on a project to introduce the songs of the Fab Four to a younger generation. One project is an album of Beatles covers by young bands, but if Mr. Husney and his partner, Herb Jordan, are successful, they will also get more Beatles songs onto television and in the movies, something that has long been difficult — and correspondingly expensive — for Hollywood producers.

The project is an “interesting” idea, but not really anything new. Mojo and Uncut magazines have both released many compilations of Beatles covers, varying from material drawn from across their career, to covers of individual albums (the most recent being Mojo‘s we’re with the beatles from July), often with especially commissioned covers that steer well-clear of “chart” acts. They vary in their success rate. And covers of Beatles songs, though I love many, are not Beatles songs.
As for getting more of their performances on film soundtracks, or their videos/original footage on TV, we all know the problem there are the licensing costs, and – while I wish they would get on and do some things on DVD – I don’t mind that they try and protect their own recordings from being over-exploited.

I’d rather that the recordings were scarcely utilised than being on every compilation and in tv programmes, films and crap commercials, there was such a good reaction when Tomorrow Never Knows was on Mad Men because it was a rarity and how to be done with a bit of class. I’d rather have it that way than how Elvis, Buddy Holly and other artists songs have been treated over the years, spewed onto anything when a fiver is waved towards whoever owns the rights or gives the permission.

I have to admit I hate covers too though. But I just hate most covers in general, even the ones the Beatles did.
I would like more of their songs to be on tv. I think that would be awesome. There is a huge difference between ”more of their work being on tv” and ”Beatlessongs crammed in on every show possible” though.

Read the quote on that part though, Linde, “if Mr. Husney and his partner, Herb Jordan, are successful, they will also get more Beatles songs onto television and in the movies, something that has long been difficult — and correspondingly expensive — for Hollywood producers.” Doesn’t sound as if they are talking about something like, a one-off programme that collects together the videos.

If the actual Beatles song recordings became cheaper or more easily obtainable for the movies or whatever they would be on everything, same as when the songs go out of copyright – every two bit piece of s**t compilation and tacky film would be featuring them bragging about their inclusion, we saw a little of that when Love Me Do and PS I Love You were out for a short time before it changed. I dread the day when Beatles songs are hawked around on tacky albums and used to sell condom’s, bits of cheese and in movies where the inclusion makes no sense – just throw in a Beatles song, that will gain this scene some credibilty.
One show I remember playing a Beatles track is Coronation Street years ago, it was on in my house (thankfully not any more, awful programme) and two characters called Steff and Des were holding a party which, as is routine in a Soap, turned to arguments and shouting between them. Anyway Love Me Do was the record playing as the fall out occurred. And if you watch the Mother Nature’s Son episode of Only Fools and Horses you will hear an edited version of Money (That’s What I Want).
Anyone got any more? There will be others I don’t remember as I type.

And hopefully once he fully gets them back (he won’t get them all back right away, as the story explains), he’ll split it up with the Starkey, Lennon and Harrison families and estates.

Isn’t this headline misleading? If I’m reading correctly, this looks like the same story posted earlier about Paul regaining the US rights a few years from now. He hasn’t won them yet. And I don’t think they’re with Michael Jackson’s estate anymore, they’re with Sony/ATV.

Yes its misleading, if you read further down the article it doesn’t come in for another few years. Its being misleadingly titled in a number of places. Also if you want to be pedantic Paul hasn’t won them back, he is getting back due to the end of a 50 year copyright law.
As far as im aware Michael’s estate still owns part of the rights having sold a large share to Sony/ATV due to financial difficulties.

It is also misleading in that I should think he will only regain his 50% with the other 50% going to the Lennon estate, as well as only applying in the US market by the look of it.

American Scientists Attempt to Sequence John Lennon’s Genetic Code from the Beatle’s Tooth
The Canadian dentist who purchased John Lennon ‘s tooth has recently agreed to work with Penn State researchers to explore the musician’s DNA. If the venture is successful, the tooth collector is interested in preserving the valuable information with the belief that it could be used in the future for cloning the famous Beatle.
Edmonton, Alberta (PRWEB) August 16, 2013
John Lennon ‘s tooth is going under the microscope in a US lab with scientists considering ways to extract the genetic code from the fragile specimen owned by Canadian dentist-tooth collector Dr. Michael Zuk. “I am nervous and excited at the possibility that we will be able to fully sequence John Lennon ‘s DNA, very soon I hope. With researchers working on ways to clone mammoths, the same technology certainly could make human cloning a reality,” says Dr. Zuk.
The dentist attracted attention from skeptics for purchasing the rotten molar for over $30,000 US at a UK auction in 2011, with commentary from Bill O’Reilly and Anderson Cooper (making the Ridiculist). Dr. Zuk is standing firm with his conviction that the investment could be one of the best decisions of his life. Zuk says “to potentially say I had a small part in bringing back one of Rock’s greatest stars would be mind-blowing.
Other interesting considerations related to this story include:
*How future human cloning of the ultra-rich and famous could become the rage.
*New challenges to the laws that could need to recognize the legal rights of human clones.
*A unique Beatle DNA sculpture of Lennon & McCartney which may be donated to the John Lennon Art School in Liverpool.
The molar has been busy since being sold by the Beatle’s former housekeeper. It participated in a number of charitable ventures including a tour of the UK to raise awareness of mouth cancer, a line of John Lennon DNA pendants, a number of television appearances and a celebrity DNA documentary. The exact details of the scientific research is being kept confidential, but if sequencing is possible, the dentist has approved tests to be conducted to gain insight into Lennon’s genes for a UK documentary on celebrity genetics.
For an entertaining interview contact Dr. Zuk directly at 403-342-0161. His website dedicated to the John Lennon DNA project may be found at JohnLennonDNA.com.
