The original score for Eleanor Rigby is up for sale:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-e…..993526

Just got around to reading this article. Wowser! The deed to Eleanor Rigby ‘s grave is up for auction too.

Deeds for the grave and a miniature Bible, dated 1899 and with her name written inside, will also be sold.

I wonder if we will find out who buys it or if it will go to an anonymous bidder.

The more macabre aspect of the sale, according to the Liverpool Echo, is that – in seven years, the new owner of the deeds is able to decide to join the Rigby’s in their family grave.

The Beatles Story in Liverpool has announced more changes, the “NEMS shop” room has been overhauled to include a tribute to Brian Epstein:

Among the items added are Brian’s wool and cashmere coat, lyrics he wrote, a draft March 1967 letter to The Beatles, a fragment of original notepaper, and press cuttings.

Brian’s friend, Joe Flannery, shared these thoughts:

While Paul McCartney is to write a “Last Word” column about Meat Free Monday for the first edition of a new magazine about Liverpool’s hospitality sector, Good Taste, founded by former Liverpool Echo journalist, Jade Wright.

Ron Nasty said on 17 December 2015 (on page 130 of this thread)
The “Welsh Streets” in Liverpool’s Dingle area (which include Madryn Street where Ringo was born), long under threat of demolition for a regeneration project have been saved (for the time being) with Liverpool Council dropping its appeal against a Government decision to block their widespread demolition – partly because of its Beatles association. The Council has said it will now look to refurbishing the empty homes in the area (though still refusing to say there will be no demolitions proposed at a later time). Ringo’s childhood home in Admiral Grove, just around the corner, has always been safe, and now it seems his birthplace is safe as well.

It was very sad earlier in the year to see the Welsh Streets deserted and boarded up.

Welsh-Streets.jpgImage Enlarger

The battle over their future has been going on for around a decade. It will be good to see the area allowed to become a community again, rather than the one or two hold-outs having to live among boarded-up homes all around.

I’d happily live there if I had the chance.

Guess what! The houses have been restored and they look FABULOUS!!!

Revamped homes in Welsh Streets snapped up in 24 hours
Most applications came from locals and people who want to return

Merseysiders have been rushing to rent homes in the Welsh Streets , with a first phase of 24 properties going in a day.

Specialist North West developer Placefirst held an open weekend to showcase its pilot project of revamped Victorian terraced houses on High Park Street and Voelas Street, Toxteth .

Now it is preparing to release its next phase of properties, having promised an “exciting neighbourhood of contemporary family homes by completely transforming five streets of Victorian terraced houses”, retaining period features like high ceilings and big windows.

Meanwhile, Liverpool city council recently approved a £30m masterplan for the area, to include 294 homes – a mix of refurbishment and new build. A detailed planning application is expected to be submitted later this year.

Houses in the Welsh Streets were empty and tinned up for more than a decade during a long row about whether they should be demolished. And the controversy went global as one of the streets, Madryn Street, includes Ringo Starr ’s birthplace.

You have to wonder what they’re going to do with Ringo’s birthplace, whether it will be redeveloped or preserved – maybe given to the National Trust to join John and Paul’s childhood homes.

It is good to see it becoming a community again though, as it was so sad to walk down the empty and boarded up Madryn Street, @Ahhh Girl. Hopefully a rejuvenated community will see The Empress pub thriving again, rather than having to rely on Beatle traffic visiting a boarded-up house.

I do hope they find a way to make Ringo’s first home a feature to attract visitors, rather than be swallowed in the redevelopment.

If the National Trust don’t want it, it could be given to Liverpool Council to preserve, but remember it was Yoko who donated Mendips to them. They may not want to buy them, but I’m sure a gift would be appreciated.

Last year the “social action platform” Global Citizen (don’t really know what it is, but that’s how they describe themselves:

We are a social action platform for a global generation that wants to solve the world’s biggest challenges.

On our platform you can learn about issues, take action on what matters most and join a community committed to social change. We believe we can end extreme poverty by 2030, because of the collective actions of Global Citizens across the world.)

awarded the inaugural Global Citizen George Harrison Award for excellence in music and advocacy to…

It was thought it may prove to be a one-off at the time, however it seems it is to become an annual thing as this year’s recipient has been announced, and the award goes to Annie Lennox, who has said:

The beauty and power of George’s music continues to inspire millions of people, with his social, political, universal message for a more sustainable, peaceful world. At a time when it appears we are facing more challenges than ever before, we need to embrace the notion of Global Citizenship. That means choosing hope over despair, responsibility over indifference, feminism over misogyny, and respect, love and kindness over bigotry, division and hatred.

We have so many resources that can be used to make a contribution to transformative change and it starts with each of us. I believe that everyone, individually or collectively can make a difference to the goal of addressing the issue of extreme poverty through the eight entry points of water and sanitation, food and hunger, health, environment, girls and women, education, finance and innovation and citizenship. I’m very grateful to be able to share and amplify this message and am truly honoured to be part of the ethos of George’s vision, which I endorse with all my heart.

She will be given the award on 18 September.

Posted on @Ahhh Girl’s recommendation and request.

A major new set of unseen Beatles photographs taken on 25 and 26 August 1967, during their visit to Bangor to attend the Maharishi’s TM conference, their stay shortened by Brian’s unfortunate death, are to be auctioned by Omega Auctions on 11 September. In all, 101 photographs, including the negatives and copyright, make up the lot, which is estimated at between £10,000-£15,000 (a higher amount reached would not surprise me).

This Daily Mail article contains some of the pictures. The auction catalogue (search for lot 224, as I cannot find a way to link directly to the page) contains 72 of the images, and gives the following description:

THE BEATLES IN BANGOR 1967 – incredible collection of 101 previously unseen and unpublished negatives featuring high quality images of The Beatles when they visited Bangor on the 25th & 26th August 1967 for a 10 day conference on Transcendental Meditation with the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.  The images range from candid individual portraits, shots of them entering and leaving the conference, group shots and pictures with their wives and girlfriends of the time.  The Beatles left the conference early following the tragic announcement of Brian Epstein’s death on Sunday 27th August which as the vendor explains is why the images were never used.  The images (of which 72 are shown in the listing) are to be sold with full copyright.  Provenance:  Taken in person by the vendor who was a freelance photographer at the time and later went on to work for the BBC for 31 years.

The pictures are well worth a look.

(Also posted in 1967 photographs.)

If you skip ahead to lot 242, there’s some specs of Lennon’s, and on 250 there’s a bit of controversy over a musical score by George Martin.

I'm like Necko only I'm a bassist ukulele guitar synthesizer kazoo penguin and also everyone. Or is everyone me? Now I'm a confused bassist ukulele guitar synthesizer kazoo penguin everyone who is definitely not @Joe.  This has been true for 2016 & 2017 Sig-Badge.png but I may have to get more specific in the future.

Kudos to this author for making me laugh out really loud. https://www.theguardian.com/mu…..-go-unsold

Poor old Eleanor Rigby . Nobody came to her funeral and now nobody wants to pay enough for her grave, after the deeds to her Liverpool burial plot failed to sell at a Beatles auction.

The Bangor pictures reached the low end of their estimate, £10,000, which surprised me, considering they came with copyright, which allows them to be used in many different ways – from a book, to calendars, tee-shirts, etc.

Another thing that surprised me when looking through the catalogue to see the prices reached, is that it seems Hunter Davies has sold what would appear to be pretty much his whole Beatles library, which would indicate he was being truthful when he said 2016’s The Beatles Book would be his last, as he seems to have sold pretty much all of his research material and more.

Lot 154 BEATLES & RELATED BOOKS – HUNTER DAVIES – collection of approximately 90 x Beatles and related books, all signed by Hunter Davies. Originally from Hunter’s private collection. Estimate: 100 GBP – 150 GBP
Sold for 140 GBP

Lot 155 BEATLES & RELATED BOOKS/MAGAZINES – HUNTER DAVIES – collection of approximately 33 x Beatles and related books, all signed by Hunter Davies. 12 x ‘The Beatles Club’ magazines (Japanese), still in envelopes, many still sealed. Approximately 40 x Beatles Museum ‘Things’ magazines (German), still in envelopes. Originally from Hunter’s private collection. Estimate: 80 GBP – 120 GBP
Sold for 95 GBP
Lot 156 PAUL MCCARTNEY & GEORGE HARRISON BOOKS – HUNTER DAVIES – collection of approximately 36 Paul McCartney & George Harrison related books, all signed by Hunter Davies. Originally from Hunter’s private collection. Estimate: 60 GBP – 100 GBP
Sold for 90 GBP
Lot 157 JOHN LENNON BOOKS – HUNTER DAVIES – collection of approximately 48 x John Lennon related books, all signed by Hunter Davies. Also includes a CD with handwritten cover ‘Rupert Mellor – There will always be your songs (A tribute to John Lennon )’, put together in the hours following John’s murder. Originally from Hunter’s private collection. Estimate: 80 GBP – 120 GBP
Sold for 60 GBP
Lot 158 BEATLES & RELATED BOOKS – HUNTER DAVIES – collection of 11 x Beatles related books sent to Hunter Davies for review. Includes Hunter’s review notes and all books are signed by Hunter Davies. Also 12 x Beatles & related books written and signed by Hunter Davies (includes 3 x Japanese and 1 audio book collection). Originally from Hunter’s private collection. Estimate: 80 GBP – 120 GBP
Sold for 110 GBP

Lot 159 BEATLES & RELATED BOOKS – HUNTER DAVIES – collection of 18 x Beatles related books sent to Hunter Davies by the authors, all signed by Hunter Davies and the author. Includes books signed by Roag, Pete and Rory Best. Originally from Hunter’s private collection. Estimate: 100 GBP – 150 GBP
Sold for 80 GBP
And then the real gem…
Lot 160 BEATLES BOOKS – HUNTER DAVIES – original unpublished version of The Beatles The Authorised Biography by Hunter Davies, signed by Hunter. This contains the first 21 chapters and is the version corrected and edited in March 1968, not the final version. Estimate: 100 GBP – 150 GBP
Sold for 440 GBP
So, for the whole lot, a total of 1015 GBP. Not bad for such an expansive collection, despite a few reappearances in different editions.

Four public transport buses in Liverpool decorated to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Sgt. Pepper joined the fleet yesterday. These are not special buses running as tourist buses, these are general fleet buses running normal routes for the next year (at least – who knows, they may decide to keep them).

Each bus is themed on the colour of a different Beatles Pepper uniform.

I very much doubt their drivers will be wearing those uniforms day-to-day.

a-hard-days-night-ringo-8I can imagine a certain person sitting at the bus stop and waving bus after bus past, muttering, “Can’t they see I’m waiting for Paul?” a-hard-days-night-george-10

BBC Newsnight broadcast an interview with Ringo last night. He takes in the new album, him and Paul, The Beatles, being underrated, having his head chopped off, and Brexit in around five minutes:

As happens when anyone comments on Brexit, his comments are making headlines…
