The Top 2000 is one of the biggest events in the Netherlands. It was first started in 1999, to wrap up the year with the best music possible, and to chime in the new century. The countdown started during christmas 1999, and continued non-stop until midnight on 31 December – hence the name top 2000; it was the year 2000 by the time #1 finished playing. Even though we’re entering 2016 soon, it’s still got the same name and it’s still 2000 songs.
You might wonder what this tidbit is doing in the Beatles news thread. Well, there obviously are a lot of Beatles tunes in the top 2000. This year’s list hasn’t been published yet, but between the Beatles and the Fabs’ post-Beatles work, I’d estimate they provided 50-60 songs in this list. But here’s what’s newsworthy: there’s a new #1. Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody has come in first most years, but this year, our very own is the winner, and what other song could it be but Imagine … People say it’s because of the recent violence, though I doubt that’s the sole reason. Whatever led people to vote differently this time ’round, I think it’s great to have Imagine as the ultimate #1 of the ultimate Dutch music chart.
By the way, is the undisputed #1 when it comes to the number of songs provided. He plays and/or sings on the 40-something Beatles songs in the list of course, but his Wings and solo work is also very well represented, meaning no other artist has more songs in the top 2000 than Paul. Cool, eh?

Aaaah just wanted to say this! Anyway, it’s great. I vote for Imagine every year, with another association as all the violence actually. It always reminds me of my grandpa, who died 10 years ago. My grandpa was, and my grandma is, a John Lennon fan. Imagine was playing on his funeral when they carried the coffin. My mom had a cd with the songs that were played on his funeral which she would often play. For the first few years I couldn’t listen to Imagine at all without bursting out in tears.
I love that it’s #1, but it’s essention passes a lot of people by. They complain how it’s not very pleasant and how it’s dramatic, that it’s about politics now and all. They don’t see it’s a song about peace, and wanting a change in the world, imagining there’s no heaven or hell, religion, and that we could all be one. It IS a very pleasant song, a slightly naive and optimistic song. I love Bohemian Rhapsody, I love going into the new year with the big gong, but it’s very fitting that this year, Imagine is #1.
Btw, Hotel California was #1 last year. I have always found that one slightly boring.
Did you vote, JPM-fangirl?

Yes I voted, and I did vote for Imagine as well.
Like you, I didn’t do it for symbolic reasons. I just love the song. My list is quite varied most years, but I decided to go into full Beatlemaniac/Paulette mode this year, as you can see here… The reason I did that, is Because I read many songs from the 60’s are dropping from the list due to people adding newer songs. Since I happen to think most contemporary music is not very good (and definitely not better than the Golden Oldies), I made it a point to vote for the classics as much as I could. If enough people do that, the great music of the sixties might come back where they belong…
P.S. I find the whole protest a load of bollocks. I seriously can’t see why so many people are upset about Imagine being #1. It’ll be Bohemian Rhapsody again next year, of Hotel California, or Stairway to Heaven, or whatever. What harm is there in having a different winner this time? I mean; it could be much worse!

The Liverpool Echo reports that the new statue(s) of the Boys will be unveiled on Friday 5 December, the 50th anniversary of their last performances in Liverpool (two shows at the Empire Theatre on 5 December 1965).
The statues are in place and just waiting…

Will the unveiling be on Friday or on 5 December? They are two different days.
To the fountain of perpetual mirth, let it roll for all its worth. And all the children boogie.

I wonder whether if they would all be overjoyed or horrified at a statue commemorating them…. I’m happy, though. 😉

I think Paul and Ringo would be happy, and John and George would be horrified.

Why is the statue of John wearing a jacket and carrying a jacket?
The one John is holding is a rain mac, the other is a suit jacket I think.
I’m more interested in why Paul is pregnant.
Wogblog has a few other pictures.

Ringo looks really bummed out about something or other.Someone probably made a remark about his nose.
Or he is upset that he is not in step with the others in this grouping.
