I’m currently wrestling with a dilemma. I might like Bob Dylan more than the Beatles. What do I do?
I wouldn’t call it a dilemma, I mean what does ‘favourite musician’ mean after all? It’s not as if one gives one’s favourite band a vow to always remain loyal or whatever. For me, and I think it’s actually the case for most people, musical preference comes and goes in phases. One time you have a Beatles phase than you have a Dylan phase, a Pink Floyd phase, a Beethoven phase, a Justin Bieber phase,… it’s fluent like everything in life and sometimes a bit of distance is even beneficial in the end to see things from a new perspective. I admit I’ve had some weeks this year in which I just didn’t feel like listening to Beatles and obsessed over Pink Floyd instead. But each time, when I returned to the Beatles sometime later, I had felt that I could appreciate them from yet another perspective now that I have discovered other things and my love for the Beatles had even grown.
All I’m trying to say is, the music is there for YOU not you for the music, so onto your question: what do you do? Just listen to the music you feel like listening to the most and don’t feel guilty about the things you enjoy – even if it’s not the Beatles you enjoy most. It’s not a competition. And besides, even when the Beatles are your second-favourite band, I’m sure you’re still a bigger Beatlemaniac than many, many fans out there – and that’s neither good nor bad, that’s merely a fact.
Currently, Led Zeppelin has jumped onto my number two, Pink Floyd follows on the third place, and Jimi Hendrix on the fourth position. Beatles are still my number one.

@Martha, thou hast stolen my words
I admit I’ve had some weeks this year in which I just didn’t feel like listening to Beatles and obsessed over Pink Floyd instead. But each time, when I returned to the Beatles sometime later, I had felt that I could appreciate them from yet another perspective now that I have discovered other things and my love for the Beatles had even grown.
I admit this has happened to me a good deal as well. And possibly Led Zeppelin too, although, while I have a Whole Lotta Love for Led Zepp, I don’t think it quite approaches my adoration for either the Beatles or Pink Floyd… but it’s pretty darn close.
Anyway, @sir walter raleigh I understand if you feel a bit guilty or disloyal about loving Dylan more than the Beatles, I’ve gone through such phases as well with Pink Floyd. I was in denial for ages and ages before I could even allow them to tie with the Fabs. But it’s okay. As long as you love the Beatles, it really doesn’t matter whether you’re wrong you’re right where you belong you’re right where you belong.
The Beatles would approve, anyway; they were all massive Dylan fans, as I’m sure you know!

Wouldve loved to pick Phish but they’re competing with all of the Petes and Pauls as well as Pink Floyd
