Queen are one of those bands I would include on my favourites list but when I think it there is a load of stuff of theirs I don’t actually like.
Yeah, I’m like that with Sinatra. But Sinatra’s got like seventy albums so it would be pretty crazy if I did love all his stuff.

I’m getting more into Pink Floyd too. I really only knew most of the Wall and all of Dark Side Of The Moon and the popular stuff like Shine on you crazy diamond and Wish you were here, but now I’ve checked out most of their stuff and I really love it. I had heard a lot of it before, since my dad is a huge Pink Floyd fan and plays it a lot, but of course I never recognized it as PF.I’ve tried to listen to more Bob Dylan and more of the Stones, but I guess they just don’t do it for me. They have some good songs, but Bob Dylan is just not my taste and The Stones just have a lot of crap songs.
What do you think of Animals?
And my current favorite band is Radiohead.

^ I know you didn’t ask me, but I’ll answer anyway, if you don’t mind.
Considering the importance that I felt people (media, other fans, reviews, etc.) place/d on it, I felt a little let down when I did listen to the whole thing all the way through. It was the last PF album I the listened to and I was just a little underwhelmed by it. The first few times I listened to Dark Side I sat on the floor shaking, literally, all the way through it. It made that much of an impact on me. I was (almost) equally impressed by The Wall and Meddle as well, but ‘Animals’ – no. Some incredible playing by Gilmour on there, and some very good lyrics too, but it’s not one of my favourites.
What are your thoughts?

I like Animals. It’s not as good as DSOTM or Meddle, but I like it. It lacks something though, not sure what. I also don’t really like Pigs (the second one). Love Sheep and Dogs.
I didn’t react the same way you did to Dark Side. I don’t know, I don’t have that often with music anyways. Plus I really hate Money. I’ve hated that song since I was little. The only 2 Pink Floyd songs that really had a similar effect to me as DSOTM had on you were Comfortably Numb and Echoes.
Albums I still have to listen to: A small part of The Division Bell, about 3/4 of A Momentary Lapse of Reason and all of the Final Cut except for 2 songs. Wow that actually sounds like quite a lot.
So people, what’s your fav album and song?

My favorite albums by Pink Floyd are The Wall, Wish You Were Here and Dark Side of The Moon
The following people thank Maxwell Edison MD for this post:
Von Bontee“Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans.” John Lennon “Some people live more in 20 years than others do in 80. It’s not the time that matters, it’s the person.” The Tenth Doctor, The Lazarus Experiment.

I only have two Pink Floyd albums (DSOTM and Wish You Were Here), I would have bought The Wall but it’s a big album, in my opinion there are some weaker tracks in it. I like the Animals album as well but I am searching for a good copy.
I only listen to post-Barrett albums because frankly I don’t want a Revolution 9 -ish album.

A few years back someone tried to get me into PF by playing Money, failed miserably as I thought the song was awful (would be like putting on Hold Me Tight for The Beatles). Only recently have I began to dabble and that was thru a fan remix of The Wall not the official release, I haven’t heard a lot tho as I have such a backlog of music to get thru.

My dad has The Wall so that’s how I’ve gotten to know that one. It even came with a window sticker yaaay!
I was afraid of that too when I first started to listen to Piper At The Gates Of Dawn but I couldn’t really discover a song that made me think of Revolution 9 , fortunely. Nothing ghastly like that. Of course not all songs are equally great, but it’s not a bad album. I quite enjoy the psychedelic stuff.

Recently got the Oasis Time Flies compilation from the local library and went thru it. Is there anyone who has a more dreary, monotone, sneery vocal than Liam Gallacher and some of the song lyrics a drunker spider could improve on after knocking over a bottle of ink. Ended up with 3 songs; Songbird, The Importance of Being Idle, and Don’t Look Back in Anger.
Anyone able to recommend a good Eric Clapton album, got his career best of compilation and there are some fantastic songs in there – White Room (admittedly by Cream) is one fantastic song.

Oasis are mainly crap apart from a handful of excellent singles, album tracks, and B-sides.
Clapton’s best work, BY FAR, was during his Cream/Blind Faith/Derek and the Dominos era (’66-’71). I’d highly recommend getting Cream’s “Wheels of Fire” and Derek and the Dominos “Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs” albums…both are masterpieces.

PF, when they were with Syd, were a (very good) psychedelic band, not Avant-Garde. There’s not reason why Piper, for example, would remind you of Rev. 9. You should give it a try, it’s a good album (although I may be slightly biased, as I’m a big fan of that kind of music, reviews were/are fairly positive).
Don’t understand the dislike of ‘Money’, as I quite like it. The lyrics are blunt and very humorous in a dry way, certainly not the worst I’ve ever heard. Oh yeah, and there’s that brilliant solo and KILLER bassline!

I bought ‘Slowhand’ a few months back and I have nothing too bad to say about it at all. If you’re not a big fan, and don’t think you might become one based on what you’ve already heard, then you might want to stick to compilations and things like that as Clapton did do the odd bad, or very bad, song.

There is one song of Clapton’s (I forget the name at the moment) which is a nice song, good vibe and all that yet for some reason, 3/4’s of the way thru, bursts into a heavy guitar solo before stopping and returning to how it was before. Find that really puzzling, kind of like when producing the song someone thought this isn’t Clapton enough lets stick in a needless solo. I like the song, just find it bizarre.

I like Clapton, but I’d just stick to a compilation album indeed. Funny you’re mentioning Clapton, as I’m starting to discover more of his music too. At the moment I’m having a little obsession with Layla. I remember my mom playing it a lot when I was younger, but which 4 year old likes songs like that? Now I’ve learned to appreciate it though. Great riff and I like the piano coda too.
@Emily The bassline is great, of course. It’s just the overall vibe of the song that doesn’t do it for me and I don’t like saxophones. Also, it doesn’t go well with the other songs on DSOTM imo.

I always find it interesting that Something originally finished with a piano-led jam, and Layla – a song about the same woman – did exactly the same. I always wonder whether Eric, wanting to make his message clear, and having heard the unreleased version, did it on purpose.

Comfortably Numb still has that effect on me – The Wall is one of my very favourite albums.
At the risk of being boring, my list of bands would also be;
Led Zeppelin and
Pink Floyd but also….
Dire Straits
U2
The Band
Eagles
Jimi Hendrix
Travelling Wilburys
Inxs
Wings
The Pogues
and more recently Mumford and Sons.
I’m always really conscious of the fact that most of the stuff I love is classic rock – I’m willing to get into newer bands but I only ever seem to like some individual tracks, not enough to want the whole album. A lot of what I listen to at the moment are soundtracks eg. The Boat That Rocked, Walk The Line, Local Hero, Deadwood.

Given Eric’s state of mind at the time i.e. hopelessly obsessed, I think it’s quite possible it was intentional.

Interesting! Didn’t even know that about Something .
The piano coda in Layla could’ve been intentional. All I know is that Jim Gordon, who played that on Layla (he was actually a drummer) was once playing it in the studio, being intended for his own solo album and Eric heard it and liked it. He didn’t know how to end the song, because ending it abruptly would be ridiculous and a fade out would take away the urgency of the lyrics, or something like that. But what do we know? Could’ve been intentional, absolutely.

Well, I guess I’m in the minority here, but Animals is my favorite Floyd album. There’s a bootleg of their ’77 tour called Animal Instincts, and the performances of the songs from Animals are absolutely amazing. Especially Pigs (Three Different Ones).
I have Wheels Of Fire and Layla on vinyl, both in good condition. I also like Slowhand, but a few of the tracks on it I don’t care for.

Ah, yes. To be honest, I do agree with you there. The first time I heard it, I thought it was a song they did a little later, or maybe before, but not for ‘DS’. It’s probably the lack of Rick’s organ, it makes the feel of the song completely different to the rest of the album. I think he was a vital part in creating the PF sound, and ‘Money’ (I don’t think) has that sound that you instantly associate with the group – except that guitar solo, which is unmistakingly a Gilmour solo.
