I know for a fact that Oasis was pretty much obsessed with the Beatles…. And that’s why I love them. Their music sounds so similar it’s scary. They mentioned Yellow Submarine in Supersonic for Pete’s sake! And to me, Don’t Look Back In Anger sounds like Happiness Is A Warm Gun … But anyway. Other bands.
Oasis
Blur! (My brother just ordered the box set… I’m stoked)
Nirvana
Dion
Bob Dylan
Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons (don’t make fun…)
BUDDY HOLLY.
And most doo-wop. I like a lot of Brit pop from the 90s too. Basically, if I think it sounds anything like the Beatles, I like it.

I have always thought that ”She’s Electric” sounds a bit like something that Paul or John could’ve wrote. I can’t remember the words properly but isn’t it something like ”she’s got a sister and in the palm of her hand there’s a blister” and then something to do with someone being in the oven.
Moving along in our God given ways, safety is sat by the fire/Sanctuary from these feverish smiles, left with a mark on the door.

I’m a bit late on this I guess, but it looked like fun so yeah.
Andrea Bocelli
Bob Dylan
CSN
Dean Martin
Elton John
Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons
G [none]
Harry Nilsson [Herman’s Hermits]
Ice Cube – The Predator is one of my favorite albums.
.
“The Predator” is my favourite rap album of all time! (And there’s plenty of great “G” bands out there)
Also, I just wanna clarify: When I left that blank “X” on my A-Z list, I wasn’t really leaving it blank – I was referring to the band, X! They were great! Well, they were more than OK for about their first four albums back in the ’80s. XTC and X-Ray Spex are the only other “x” bands I own. So there.

I’m in love with the Tragically Hip right now. It’s funny – they’re known as such a hard rock band, but their best songs are all their ballads – like Wheat Kings

Hey me too! I wonder if they’re as popular elsewhere as they are in Canada.
I’ve been loving Two Door Cinema Club and Radiohead lately.
And Dire Straits as well, my dad and I just got tickets to Bob Dylan and Mark Knopfler! I’m pretty excited, Knopfler is a virtuoso.

I don’t think the Hip really have any following outside Canada, except in border cities like Detroit

Ah okay. Sometimes the music that gets airplay in Canada isn’t all that great .

Just because it’s Canadian doesn’t mean it’s good… Not everyone is Arcade Fire.
…or Hey Rosetta, or City And Colour, or Feist, or Sam Roberts, or Serena Ryder, or Arkells, or Neil Young, or Plants and Animals, or the Sheepdogs… I could go on. CanCon regulations are brilliant and useless for the same reason – alternative stations can just load up on the bands I list, but crappy stations are forced playing Bieber and Nickelback (who are truly crap).

Very true, the results of the regulations go both ways. Unfortunately, if you live where I do where the radio stationscountry, or top 40, you generally get the bad end of the deal. I stick to my CDs as of late.
I’ve been getting into the Sheepdogs and Arkells a bit, what are Plants and Animals like?

Plants and Animals are hard to describe, and frankly, a video tells a million words: Lightshow.
Now, I still consider the Can Con regulations good, because it means that good radio stations are legally forced to play good music (Of which there is considerable Canadian selection). I still think they`re worth it.

If I may add something to the Canadian-music discussion, I’d like to name-drop Sloan.
Sloan came out of Halifax during the early-90s Grunge explosion, but they quickly re-defined themselves as Beatlesque power-pop craftsmen.
All four members write, sing and play multiple instruments. One of the truest democracies in music, almost every album runs 12 songs with each member contributing 3 apiece.
If you like stuff like Big Star, Cheap Trick or Matthew Sweet, you could do worse.

Where in the Great White North? I`m an Ottawa boy, born and bred.
I actually saw Sloan do a free show on Canada Day (2011). They sounded okay, but The Other man is such a good song. I may take a listen.

Originally from Halifax, now in Kitchener.
I’ve also done time on Vancouver Island and wayyyy up North.
I’m actually friends with Jay Ferguson from Sloan. They’ve been releasing their own bootlegs on vinyl recently, and I supplied the tapes for the last one which was a 1999 Australia show.
‘Twice Removed’ is recognized as one of the finest Canadian albums ever made. If you go to Youtube, you can hear it in its entirety.
