Never ceases to amaze me that there’s so many lost Beatles’ recordings that I’ve never heard before…  This one in particular I never even knew existed, let alone actually heard…  It screams of fakery but certainly sounds authentic…  Anybody Heard This?  Is It Real?!:

…:-)

I’m pretty sure it’s fake as only a short excerpt was available for a long time and this has been up for 7 1/2 years.

The Quarrymen’s set, remarkably, was recorded by an audience member, Bob Molyneux, on his portable Grundig reel-to-reel tape recorder. In 1994 Molyneux, then a retired policeman, rediscovered the tape, which contained scratchy recordings of the band performing Lonnie Donegan’s Puttin’ On The Style and Elvis Presley’s Baby, Let’s Play House.

The tape was sold on 15 September 1994 at Sotheby’s for £78,500. At the time it was the most expensive recording ever sold at auction. The winning bidder was EMI Records, who considered if for release as part of the Anthology project, but chose not to as the sound quality was substandard.

At least we know there was a recording. If the one you posted isn’t the real one, it would be great if the real one were made available!

I am wrong. Turns out that pretty much the full song is out. The snippet is from John C Winn’s ‘Way Beyond Compare‘ and explains how the track has been pieced together from three sources, ranging from poor to damn right awful.

I tend to agree…  Unreal that someone happened to be recording them on the very day that they met…

The fidelity is, as you say, “damn right awful” but man what a slice of history and a downright treasure…  As bad as the recording is, John’s voice still cuts through and you can easily hear how Paul would’ve been impressed at the time…  I mean, is he even 17 years old here?  A little surprised that EMI wouldn’t have made more of an effort to clean this one up, didn’t the Star Club tapes also feature similar muddiness before they were refurbished?

As I said all ready, my first reaction was it was a fake and I nearly didn’t even bother to listen to it at all, but there’s no mistaking John’s voice and it reminds me of how I still feel about ‘Peace of Mind’…  The recording is s**t…  The source is suspect…  but the voice is undeniable…  Hearing how The Quarrymen played on the day that John met Paul just seems so very far out to me and something that I NEVER thought I’d hear…  Makes me think of what else may be out there?…:-)

Sounds like Revoulution 9 the whole time, if not a little bit scarier. John does a little of that shaky vibrato scream hear like he does on Rev 9.

You’re more qualified at these kinda things than I, Ahhh Girl…  Do what you will…  The topic question has pretty much been answered all ready with the background that both you and meanmistermustard tabled anyways…  Still a little dumbfounded that this actually exists…:-)
