Came across this, an account of their appearance at Dodger Stadium on 28 August 1966 – their penultimate concert. Bob Smith, who was head of security, provides his view of the event. He goes through the details of all the security plans, including how they would get them out of the stadium at the end of the show (that part is quite amusing as their exit didn’t go quite as planned).

That story and dozens of other similar ones are in Chuck Gunderson’s book Some Fun Tonight! which covers all 3 American Tours. Obviously, getting them in and out of stadiums, hotels, private homes, etc… was not easy and took considerable planning and subterfuge. Even funnier are the stories of how fans attempted to evade security – some successfully. It’s a great book and I plan on giving it a second read in the not too distant future.

In 2010, to mark the 30th anniversary of John’s murder, the BBC broadcast a documentary called The Lennon Legacy. Various people were interviewed for the show, most ending up with just a few minutes. This is James Taylor’s full interview, from which his contribution was taken. It ends with a lovely performance of In My Life :

Sad no one likes James Taylor! Oh well! (Well! Well! Well!)
Let’s try June Furlong, life art class model during John’s time at the college, and quite a character:

I came across this interview with Beatles’ latter-day hairstylist Leslie Cavendish when doing ‘research’ for my next haircut.

New interview with Pete Best, ahead of his appearance in Lennon’s Banjo.
…regardless of what happened, you’ve got to be proud of the fact that you can call yourself a Beatle or an ex-Beatle.
And a new interview with Tony Bramwell, childhood friend through to Apple, but reflecting on the early years.

Fascinating audio interview, just under an hour in length, with George Martin from 3 March 1987; done to coincide with the beginning of the first four albums being released on CD. Lots of interesting titbits. I’d forgotten GM wasn’t brought in to have a listen to what EMI planned until December 1986.
And an interview with Hunter Davies from 11 October 2012 at the British Library to coincide with newly-released The Lennon Letters, though it takes in more than just that book. Just over an hour in length, it concludes with The Quarrymen performing Rock Island Line.

Fascinating Guardian article written by Philip Norman about the highs and lows of being a rock biographer…
… As I walked across Central Park to the Dakota, a thought suddenly popped into my head: “Suppose she’s waiting for me with a lawyer?”
She was waiting with two lawyers…
…and there’s much more about his brushes with the Beatles circle.

Not an interview this time, but an interesting article by Peter Brown, written for the Financial Times to coincide with upcoming 50th anniversary of the rooftop concert. He explores “the myth of the Fab Four,” and how “you separate truth from the legend”.
