I think “Long and Winding Road” is a good song, but I don’t like to listen to it (sounds paradoxical, doesn’t it…). You Beatlemaniacs probably already know that Paul originally wrote it for Tom Jones but for some reason Tom didn’t take off with it. You guys also probably know that in the movie Let It Be , there’s a scene with Paul, George and Ringo rehearsing it in a comically fast tempo, evidently kind of making fun of the song — until Paul says (to paraphrase from memory) “Okay, boys, that’s enough…” (it seems George and Ringo were having a bit too much fun poking fun at it…).

Well, There Is No Worst Beatle Song. Everybody has different options but i hate Blue Jay Way , i can’t take… but theres no worst beatle song, there isn’t even a bad song.

Hands down, “Oh Darlin”, Paul’s sore thumb on Abbey Road . He should have given it to Elvis or tacked it onto the White Album somewhere. It’s just a harsh screamer in the midst of side one.

Question……….
Can anyone say……hand on heart. that The Long And Winding Road ……….is not as good as ‘Act Naturally ‘?

Yes I can. Much rather listen to the latter any time of day.
Nice upbeat and catchy song as against that turgid mess – easy choice. I’m sure Paul has a good song hidden in there somewhere – but I haven’t heard it yet.

Maybe I’m misunderstanding what you’ve just said…….’I’m sure Paul has a good song hidden in there somewhere – but I haven’t heard it yet.’
You’re saying that your obvious love of the Beatles is due to the other three and that Paul’s songs don’t in your opinion measure up? Further that his entire solo career has not produced one good song!…….’There might be one in there but I’ve not heard it yet.’
I know we all have different taste and there’s no amount of argument that can make me enjoy Act Naturally …..or convert you to loving TLAWR…….I get and accept that difference but surely amongst all of Paul’s output there are some that you consider good?
I’m not knocking you I’m just frankly incredulous ………..
I must have misunderstood …………mustn’t I?

I like The Long And Winding Road and Act Naturally .

I’m sure if you were put under the right conditions, you would grow to like a song that you hated before.

You cray, it’s in the top 5 of Abbey Road . Top 5 of all Beatles songs I think.

I read trc’s post as there might be something good about The Long And Winding Road but he hasn’t discovered it for himself yet. In other word, he may one day add a post about this song to the songs you used to not like but you do now.

yeah, i believe @trcanberra meant there was a good song somewhere in ‘TLAWR’ but more work would need to be done if it were to become one.
Over the two (‘TLAWR’ and ‘Act Naurally’) i’d always go for the latter. ‘TLAWR’ is great on ‘Anthology 3 ‘ in its basic form but i dont like the over-production on the commercial version at all.

Yes indeed – that’s what I meant, though I’m not sure it ever can become one (for me).
Apart from the endless attempts during the original sessions Paul even had another crack at it on “Give My Regards To Broad Street ” and for my money almost derailed what was otherwise a pretty good soundtrack album.

Didnt Paul alter the ‘Give My Regards…’ version tho by substituting the orchestral work for a saxophone or something? Not entirely sure if thats correct tho I do know it sucked as did all the others. An album filled with horrible pointless remakes.

And some quite pleasant originals.

I grew a new middle name 🙂
Anyhoo – no worries @Wigwam. Yes, Ram is one of my favourite albums ever and I saw Paul in Brissie when I was young and loved it and … well, we all get the picture. I think I even mentioned in one thread that Paul may well be my current favourite overall musically.

Not sure those two versions of ‘No More Lonely Nights’ count each count as “originals”. The rest is hackwork crap Macca at his hackwork crap worst.
It one of those catch 22 situations where you hear the remakes and think “dear god, couldnt he have given us any new material?” only to hear the new material (bar ‘NMLN’) and think “dear god, a remake would surely be better than this pile of garbage”.

Actually, that’s a Buck Owens song that Ringo and George liked, country boys that they were. It was not written by a Beatle. Unfortunately, Long and Whiny was….
