My favorite Paul screamers:
Get On the Right Thing
Back Seat of My Car (only happens at the very end)
Mumbo
I can’t think of others off hand, though I’m sure they exist. The obvious ones Paul fans would cite — Oh Darling, Why Don’t We Do It In The Road, Helter Skelter , Smile Away — are all great, but somehow to me they don’t quite rise to the inspired effortless genius of the songs listed above.
As for John, I agree with those cited above. I would add the one song where John just pulls out all the stops like no one else has, offering the most honest screams perhaps ever recorded by anyone: in the long finale of Mother .

The question is, after all, which do you prefer — not which is objectively better. I definitely prefer Paul. However, as I have noted in another topic I created, Paul does seem to have a bit of a deficiency in translating raw emotion into his talent; John had a natural knack for that. It seems usually that people with less technical talent have more “soul” (one exception to this rule: Ray Charles — he had both technical talent and soul).
Yeah, that is a good observation. I prefer to hear more emotion, so that probably explains why John is my ”favourite”, if pushed. I’m not saying he was the best vocalist technically, he wasn’t, and yet I still prefer his singing in these types of songs (in general). I’m one of those that think Oh! Darling could’ve been sung better, well, not better, but certainly differently to Paul. I am curious as to how it would’ve sounded if John had done it.

Ever since i first heard it have preferred the Anthology version of Oh! Darling with both John and Paul singing, the vocals sound so much better than on Abbey Road with just Paul. Would have loved it if that was how it was recorded for the record.

Both were great, but whereas Paul sounded good and had more range, John sounded like HE WOULD DIE unless he got what he wanted. There is a desparation in John’s voice that I dont hear in Paul’s. Paul is having a grand time in Long Tall Sally , etc… but John will STOP EXISTING unless you “deliver the letter,” or he gets money, or you give bang your ring, or you stop talking to other guys, or you shake it up baby.
So, slight edge to John.

Me too, which is why I wonder how it would’ve sounded with John alone. We can only wonder…
Can’t that website that isolates tracks simply take that song and just eliminate the Paul track?

What website’s this? I’m not very good with things like that, to be honest.

Hopefully the folks on here are slightly more intelligent than to bring it down to a stupid argument on who did/does what.
I know that there are mixes out there that have isolated the vocals on all tracks as well isolating the three part harmonies on This Boy and Because to reveal what each Beatle is singing so it probably is possible. How to do it i have no idea.

So true. Hopefully my spell will dispel any chance of those ideas from popping up here.
Which one do I prefer screaming? Nah…shhhhh, Ahhh Girl. Let the people go on with their discussion.

Some of the BBers here seem to know how to do that track isolating. I created a topic I think many months ago asking for a “tutorial” on that, but I never got an answer I could work with.

It all gives me a bit of a headache. I’ve kind of been wanting to work the more technical side of music out, but I can’t seem to find the will or energy to do so.

That would be very interesting if someone knows how!

Paul’s voice is more suited for it, I feel. That being said, I much prefer John’s screaming – someone years ago posted it was more of a growling scream like in ‘Twist And Shout ‘ and ‘Money’.
Paul did it because he could – very well. John did it because it just came out that way through sheer emotion. Just my 2 cents worth.

I guess I have to go with John because I love the beginning of “Mr. Moonlight” so, so much. I’m not a fan of Paul’s screamy songs, and it took me a long time to appreciate “Maybe I’m Amazed ” because of the screaming.
That said, being from Chicago and Ferris Bueller leading to the song getting completely worn out there, I will hate “Twist And Shout ” forever.

Oh, I’m the opposite. I fell in love with Maybe I’m Amazed the first time I heard it, despite it being a bit of a soppy love song (nothing wrong with that, by the way, just not what I like to listen to). It’s probably one of the only ‘screamy’ songs of his that I really do like.

Ouch! Sorry to hear that ‘TaS’ got worn out for you, though I know what you mean.
It’s one of my favorites, especially at the end when the harmonized aahhs lead up to the climactic instrumental finish.
