Love the lyrical cues in that youtube instrumental 😀 I think this song was as much for George’s pleasure as Ringo’s! But don’t forget that’s John doing those low licks all the way through as a base for George’s “chicken scratching”. The Beatles always parodied with love, a fact often missed in attempts to dismiss songs like this. Simple isn’t simple, and not even that simple. Simple!

(Ringo’s isolated vocals doesn’t open in USA and I’m not finding it on Youtube – if anyone can help).
@meanmistermustard It’s hard to articulate sometimes why one likes/dislikes a song. That said, despite being a big fan of most Ringo songs, I’m one of those who completely dislikes “What Goes On .” I suppose I don’t find the melody, lyrics or arrangement any more than a yawn. I think the Beatles were a bit too democratic here – forcing themselves to find a Ringo song.

It isn’t my favourite song, by any stretch of the imagination, but it is on my playlist of 102 songs that I listen to regularly, so it has to be good. I love listening to the isolated left channel, So I can hear some excellent drumming, and bass and Ringo!!! Such an under-rated singer. So, here’s a poll, vote for all the songs you like:

@The Hole Got Fixed, hunt down the Rockband isolations or, even better, the Moggicial Mystery Tour reconstructions of the song as they are incredible to hear. George’s random sounding guitar string scratching is great and the vocals are awesome, Ringo sounding so sad and hurt.
“I used to think of no one else but you were just the same,
You never used to think of me as someone with a name.”
is one of my favourite Beatles lyrics due to the change in what was being said.

I have the multitracks to this, but haven’t thought of listening to the guitars. Thanks for the suggestion!
And with the lyrics, yes, they are astounding, though ‘what goes on’ is repeated too many times for my liking.

I voted for every song in that poll.
With What Goes On , the line
Did you mean to break my heart and watch me die?
always sticks out for me. I’m not entirely sure why, but I really like it.

Back when I played play station in my younger years, I downloaded Rubber Soul into the console and replaced game music with the album. What Goes On always stuck out to me.
I used to play a lot and heard the album hundreds of times.

The blog was long ago deleted by the creator ‘Helter Skelter ‘. The files, however, are out there in the word of the internet.

This was before the blog closed: I meant to get the Rubber Soul ones, and he had just put out the Sgt Peppers ones and unfortunately someone decided they’d sell them on another site and he got the hump and shut everything down. They are very high quality work, so if you see any helter skelter records stuff, grab it.

Wogblog reports a 1963 home demo of ‘What Goes On ‘ with John singing a different lyric to what Ringo sang on ‘Rubber Soul ‘ is going back under auction on Thursday 21st September. An excerpt of the recording will be made available prior to sale.
This track was due to be recorded on 5th March 1963 but the group ran out of time. They revisited the track during a recording session on 4th November 1965, when they were just a month away from the release of the next album, “Rubber Soul “, and had only completed half of the tracks for it. The acetate is a demo with vocals (by John) and guitars only. It was previously auctioned off by Bonham’s in December 2012, and fetched £6,250 back then. The record was one of many items given by George Harrison to his brother, Harry, and other members of his family.

I was listening to those multitracks again… and the bit at 1:29 with ‘tell me why’ repeated I always assumed to be John – I think every does.
But the multitracks sound very much to me like George, in fact. Which begs the question – if it was George, why would he do that? That’s quite uncharacteristic of him to do that sort of thing! It also begs the question if I’m hearing things and someone else’s opinion would be greatly appreciated…

Wow, that What Goes On demo is great! Wish they’d kept the verses like that, and those harmonies in the chorus. Some of you will know that What Goes On is my least favourite Beatles song, but if it was more like that demo I’d probably have loved it.
I've been up on the mountain, and I've seen his wondrous grace,
I've sat there on the barstool and I've looked him in the face.
He seemed a little haggard, but it did not slow him down,
he was humming to the neon of the universal sound.

There’s something magical about demos that the real songs just don’t have. I heard a demo of Old Brown Shoe today and wow.
