Its a John led improvisation with origins leading back to I Am The Walrus and “sitting in an English Garden” as well as featuring the “shoot me” section that can be heard at the beginning of ‘Come Together . Recorded on the 14th January 1969 (DDSI #14.33) with a brief reprise soon after (DDSI #14.35).
Out all the jams and improvisations churned out during the Get Back rehearsals this and ‘I’ve Told You Before’ are my favourites (in that you get to hear Heather (not Mills) doing a Yoko impression, and bettering her in my opinion).

I love Watching Rainbows, got it on an old vinyl bootleg No.3 Abbey Road NW8. Always wished that this was one of the tracks they’d finished during the Anthology project (along with Madman). With the sort of separation technology Giles Martin used to good effect on the new Hollywood Bowl album, Love and the Rock Band track isolations something could be technically possible if Paul and Ringo beefed up their contributions. We can dream!

It wouldn’t surprise me if in years to come, when all four Beatles are long dead, technology will allow the world to hear another ‘Beatles re-union’ where entire songs are pieced together from various sources and presented as new official material. Followed by intense discussions of whether they should be treated and classified the same as ‘She Loves You ‘, ‘Free As A Bird ‘, and ‘The Honeymoon Song’.

He says “shoot big” in Watching Rainbows, not “shoot me.”

I’ve always heard “shoot me” but that very well may be down to associations with ‘Come Together ‘.
Everywhere in the universe says George is singing “you know I believe and how” in ‘Something ‘ yet I always hear “you know I believe her now”. To me, the first is stupid and doesn’t fit.

I’ve always heard this too but, yeah… pre-conceived notions indeed… there’s other similarities to ‘Come Together ‘ though, however… compare this to the ‘Live In New York City ‘ version… The “downbeat” (or whatever you call it!) of the first two notes (eighths I think) where John slams it down on the keys before wandering off for the rest of the measure, only to return again, are very reminiscent of ‘Come Together ‘… it’s not a stretch to suggest that ‘Watching Rainbows’ was a “blueprint” for the soon-to-become unreal opener for ‘Abbey Road ‘… the ‘gobbledygook’ lyrics point to this being the ‘Walrus Gumboot’ before the ‘toe jam’ was applied… ‘Watching Rainbows’ picks up where ‘Glass Onion ‘ had left off…:-)

Also sounds like the “Everybody had a wet dream” part of I’ve Got A Feeling .
