I was thinking this the other day: John was good. Paul was good. But they weren’t great. As they were together.
George Martin said something similar I believe. I can’t imagine the pressure that would’ve been on John and Paul if they actually did come together again to make music.

Double Fantasy wasn’t just disappointing, it’s embarrassing schlock from start to finish. And he called Paul’s stuff “Granny s**t”, this is way worse.
The content is retro Elvis Orbison – (Just Like) Starting Over and Beatles inspired – Woman , mixed in with how he felt as a man who was 10 years older. It’s a damn good sound for John and one I would’ve liked to have seen continue if he lived longer.
I believe they called Woman “the Beatle one” while they were recording it and Starting Over “the Elvis one.” I haven’t seen this anywhere, but I think Dear Yoko is fairly obviously “the Buddy Holly one.”

Yoko’s double-album “Approximately Infinite Universe” is superior to “Mind Games ” and “Walls & Bridges” combined

Definitely unpopular, but I might agree. Yesterday is clearly brilliant in everyway. Absolutely masterpiece of a song, Tomorrow and Another Day are absolute gems early 70s Paul, and despite George Martin’s incredible string arrangement, I enjoy the loose groove that carries through both songs a lot. Particularly I think Another Day is an amazing example of Paul’s effortless sense for melody. Are they Better songs than Yesterday ? Probably not but I might enjoy them a little bit more.

I would go even further (looks both ways to dodge flying tomatoes and assorted fruit) but I actually find Yesterday tedious, plodding, and boring. The only way I can take it is with a shot of Ray Charles.

I had to look up the unfamiliar title “Tomorrow”; I’ve not played “wings wild life” many times, and only barely owned a physical copy of it, briefly, a used yard-sale 8-track tape that i bought in the mid / late 80s, and which immediately unspooled itself ruinously when I tried to play it! Anyways, yeah “Tomorrow” is really good, another one of those classic tunes that just seem ‘right that Paul’s known for.

I also like the way Paul sings in Tomorrow — first 2/3 of the song as if he’s using the top of his throat in a kind of delicate vulnerable way, then final 3/3 ripping into screaming mode.

Unpopular opinions? How about an unpopular fact:
John was a good father to Julian as much as he could have been and he himself has admitted that under the circumstances, he was as present as he could have been during Beatlemania. He also was NOT left out of inheritance as @RonNasty pointed out to me once, and he never stopped loving Julian by both his and John’s confirmation. Julian himself is an unreliable narrator and has change his story multiple times through his life, but we can confirm John was always in contact with him from childhood to adulthood, and he now admits that some of his happiest memories were with John at Tittenhurt Park. He was also very close to John in 1980. anf claims he was sent the first demos of Double Fantasy .
This idea that John left Julian alone one Yoko came along and that Julian was “Poor Julian” is BULL and always has been, and I’m sick of people making him out to be some sweet neglected angel who had his daddy taken away by an evil witch. It’s WRONG, it NEVER HAPPENED, and it pisses me off!

The Let It Be film version of The Long And Winding Road is hugely superior to any officially released album/single version and captures the simplicity McCartney was after.
