This song was a big part of turning me on to the Beatles. I listened to them for as long as I can remember thanks to my Dad being a massive Beatles fan, but seeing a video of them playing this live, I was completely enthralled watching John. I had always associated John with the round rim glasses and white piano from Imagine ; its such an iconic visual and rightfully is the default depiction of Lennon. But seeing a young man on absolutely wailing while the crowd goes ballistic, yet he looks comfortable and relaxed despite his voice sounding like he’s fighting for his life. All I could think was “THAT is John Lennon .” It really registered with me that in scope of their career they were seasoned performers and writers by the time they recorded their first album, and yet they were still in the infancy of a nuclear explosion. And there’s John, right in the middle of it delivering one of the great vocal performances of all time on a nightly basis. He is a legend for so many reasons, but being so enthralled by a performance he gave at 22/23 years old is a pivotal moment for me as a Beatles fan.
