Does anyone know where I can find “Twist And Shout (Take 2)”? And another question, has anyone heard it?

OK, that was really annoying! :) Next time you can just say “no!”

I would say that that is exactly what it says on the tin, one of the myriad versions they did for BBC Radio. While large chunks of the February 11 recording session for Please Please Me have leaked, so far as I’m aware the second take of Twist And Shout  is yet to emerge. You can tell this isn’t it simply by looking at George Martin’s description, “I did try a second take… but John’s voice had gone.” Nothing about the version posted suggests John was struggling to sing it.

I stand corrected me being the lazy person I am saw “Twist And Shout ” and “Take 2” and assumed it was the studio version although I was wondering why I could hear John, shouldn’t he be hoarse? a-hard-days-night-george-10

I recall reading that they tried a second take but John was burnt out so it wasn’t finished. Could be wrong, though.

That’s correct, early on into the 2nd take they realized John’s voice was shot so they abandoned it, especially because the first take was so s**t-hot.

Open to question. In the mythology they abandon the 2nd take quite clearly. However, in The Complete Beatles Recording Sessions, Mark Lewisohn says, “They did two, and the second one was complete, not a false start or a breakdown.”

Didn’t mean to imply abandon meant they stopped performing halfway through. I meant they didn’t consider it further because the first take was so good.

Listening to Brian Poole and the Tremeloes doing ‘Do You Love MeLive At The BBC and its nothing but a complete rip-off of ‘Twist And Shout ‘ (probably after hearing the Beatles version as well).

It should be remembered that Brian Poole & The Tremeloes first hit, in June 1963 and reaching #4 on the UK chart, was their version of Twist And Shout .

So they just knocked off their second hit from the first? Not the first to do so but also not very imaginative or impressive. And their cover of ‘Twist And Shout ‘ is lousy.

I believe the two versions of Twist And Shout were in the charts at the same time. The BP and the Tremeloes version was a single and the Beatles version was an EP(extended player – four tracks instead of two).

Neither made it to number one although they were in the top twenty for a good few weeks and both made it into the top ten. This is from memory. If someone wants to check the detail, please go ahead.

Didnt the ‘Twist And Shout ep only get to number 2 because a Beatles single was at #1?

Edit: Got to number 1 in the EP chart but i’m sure it also entered the singles chart. Need to search more.

I don’t remember it getting as high as number two. If I had to make a guess, I would say 4 or 5 was its highest position.

I didn’t know there was such a thing as an EP chart.

I’ve been making a soundtrack compilation of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. Staying true to the movie, I wanted to have a the track (Twist And Shout ) have the same overdubs as it did in the movie. There is no version of this song available (without the crowd cheering).

However, I’ve extracted the side channels, giving myself the trumpets and other bits to work with. During the instrumental break, I sourced the claps from ISHST Take 11.

As for the AHHH-AHHH….. portion, It was difficult to include the overdubbed band without crowd noise. I figured that’s okay though, it builds excitement to the song.

Here’s the version I’ve come up with. If you think there should be any edits made, please let me know! Thanks!

Daily Beatles Song Review Day 14/213: Twist And Shout

This is the best song on Please Please Me by a country mile. It isn’t even remotely close. To me, it’s also the best song from the 1963 Beatles. It’s got the best vocal performance John Lennon ever gave in his entire career. Beatles or solo, this is my favorite delivery from him. His voice was completely shot and yet he sang with complete and utter abandon. It has a roughness to the delivery that he would never achieve again, in my opinion.

Obviously, this is a cover song, and definitely better than both the original song by the Four Tops and the more famous Isley Brothers version. The lyrics are meaningless, but are the perfect vehicle for a rock delivery. The instrumentation here is also some of the best on the record. It features perhaps Ringo’s best drumming of the album, and definitely Paul’s best bassline. The guitars from both John and George are great too, of course. They are slightly buried in the mix, but when the things burying them are Ringo’s drums and John’s voice, I would happily have barely audible guitars (at least after the intro, where they’re more prominent).

This song really just is a miracle of a recording. It’s the perfect peak of the 1963 Beatles: High energy and daring, yet still rough around the edges.

Score: 10/10.

Favorite cover: Well, since this is a cover, I’d just say the Isley Brothers one, since that is also a cover of the original.

The Beatles version is rightfully iconic and frequently heard sung by crowds, heavily started by the ‘Ferris Bueller’ film.

I don’t think there is anything that needs to be said about this as it’s one of the greatest performances of a song ever.
