Hello everyone!
I’m sorry if this is in the wrong category. I do apologize, but I figured this would probably be the best place to start.
My question is exactly what the title says…. I remember listening to an outtake of an early days song and they get to the guitar solo and George just butchers it and you can hear John, either right after the solo or at the very end, say to George, “What the hell was that?” For the life of me, I can not remember what the song or recording was and its been bothering me ever since! If anyone knows what I’m talking about I would greatly appreciate the info on what this recording is!
Thank you!

It’s take 2 of ‘One After 909 ’. John says “what kind of solo was that!!?’ at the end after George plays a particularly brilliant wretched guitar solo. The whole session for that song was a mess and John in particular sounds pissed off during it.

Correct.
Take 1 Ringo stuffed up, John dug into him.
Take 2 Georged stuffed up, it was the infamous ‘what kind of solo was that’
Take 3 Paul stuffed up, John dug into him.
Take 4 John stuffed up, and the whole band dug into him! Good fun.
Take 5 was an edit piece to replace the end of take 4… This eventually saw the light of day on Anthology 1 .
Some amusing listening there for sure!

If I recall correctly, “One After 909 ” was one of the earlier songs they attempted during the “Get Back ” sessions, and there were many takes attempted during the tenure in Twickenham studios before they moved to Apple Basement. And if any of us remember about the words ‘Twickenham’ and ‘Get Back ‘ together, we all know that it usually doesn’t end well.
Nothing compares to the John-George fistfight after a take of “Maxwell’s Silver Hammer “, though.
I believe the source is either Mark Lewisohn’s “The Beatles Recording Sessions” or the Anthology book. Can’t recall, maybe I’m wrong.

From what I can remember there was a press report of a fist fight between John and George but nothing is on the tapes except George reading the report aloud much to John’s amusement.
For anyone who wants to listen to it legally, take 2 of ‘One After 909 ‘ was released on ‘The Beatles Bootleg Recordings 1963‘ (online only) which may be available for streaming depending on what day of the week Apple think it is. If not it’s easy to find to download on a billion bootlegs.

Ah, I was referring to the source for the “One After 909 ” bit, but it’s also nice to know about the press report bit. Yeah, come to think of it, I couldn’t find anything about that press recording either. Most of the stuff I seen about it was from fairly minor website pages with no references.

these takes are from Please Please Me Sessions, where the song was scrapped and picked back up during the Get Back rehearsals.

Small detail but I’m fairly sure they’re from the From Me To You /Thank You Girl session on 5 March 1963, after they’d completed PPM

That’s why he have accounts on this forum, to discuss the small details. Normally I’d include single sessions with the album, for example We Can Work It Out /Day Tripper I sort under “soul sessions” or SSF as a part of Pepper sessions, but PPM recording sessions were so brief and remarkable that the separation is worth noting

It’s on Anthology 1 . “One After 909 ” George produces a wretched solo.
George sometimes frustrated the hell out of John and Paul. At times I think they wondered if he really was good enough.
He clearly was though.

‘Anthology 1 ‘ has a sequence of takes 3 & 4 plus a full complete take comprising of takes 4 and take 5 edited together. It’s not take 2 which has the chicken screaching solo by George, that’s on the 1963 Bootleg Recordings or whatever it’s called.
