Last night around 11pm I took a walk in the cool night air, listening to music, and this song happened to be in my playlist.
I was floored by John’s singing here – it is sublime and soulful. A fantastic version.

I absolutely love this song. One of John’s best vocals, I’d say. He sounds so warm in this…. absolutely gorgeous. And one other thing I love about it is that Paul sings the bass part. You can barely hear it’s him, and he rarely sings in that low a register, but he nails it. Of course, George’s vocals tie it all together perfectly. If you ask me, they should have put this one one of their LP’s. One of the highlights, I’d say.

Probably my favorite of the BBC songs, and general Beatles covers. It sounds a lot like Buddy Holly when they sing it.

One of the loveliest songs they covered in the early years. John’s voice sounds so soft and calming.

I always felt as though ‘This Boy ‘ was a re-write of this song, which strongly resembles it… The way it starts off so mellow before John lashes out during the middle bit crying out in pain as the others break off with the harmonies… Both are great performances of two good songs… Nice job lads…:-)

Didn’t realise that John changes the lyric from “bring love to her” to “make love to her”, just assumed that was correct, and it’s all versions so not a one-off (same as “Smalco” on ‘Memphis, Tennessee’). Interesting that he starts singing “bring” on the Star Club performance but corrects* himself and turns it into “make”.
*If you sing the wrong word but always do, is it a correction to revert to that wrong word if you were singing the correct word to begin with? Are you wronging yourself?

yeah If he’s altering the lyrics on purpose and flubs his own lyric, then he’s made a mistake. Great song by the way

My my had the Teddy Bears 45 (I imagine from the time she was a teenager). I’ve never noticed, does John sing it this way on all available versions?
On the Decca, Star Club and BBC performances, yes.
That entire verse was cut when he covered it in December 1973 during the first ‘Rock ‘N’ Roll ‘ sessions but wasn’t released until 1986’s ‘Menlove Avenue’.
