The point about Be-Bop-a-Lula is an interesting one – at the same time I wonder if it was the specific song that intrigued Paul. Meaning if John had been playing Heartbreak Hotel or Shake Rattle and Roll, wouldn't Paul still have been attracted – most likely yes. So probably it wasn't the specific song but the sound that John was making.
That was pretty much my point. He could have been singing the Japanese National Anthem for that matter. The fact that John was, as Paul put it in Anthology, “pulling in his own lyrics from old blues songs” (paraphrasing here) was what impressed him – John's ability to improvise and make it sound good. This time, it just happened to be Be-Bop-a-Lula.I Want To Hold Your Hand is a great choice for most important as well.
To the fountain of perpetual mirth, let it roll for all its worth. And all the children boogie.

Y
You're right – it wasn't the song – it's what Jphn was doing to it. Ironically that is the very thing John brought to Paul's music – and what has been missing ever since – Lennon would bring that “certain thing” to Paul's songs and make them so much better. Even if it was just his guitar playing and incredibly sense of funky rhythm.
And in all fairness, John's missed the Macca influence as well.
Oh well .. .

I'm curious to see if Hey Bulldog even makes the list. In my opinion, Hey Bulldog is The Beatles' greatest song.
I think it might be more interesting to see what doesn't make the list. If Rain doesn't make the list I will never pick up a Rolling Stone magazine for the rest of my life.
Don't worry. It's on there.
I don't think “I Want To Tell You ” made it. 🙁
I like that song.

Because (the world is round) it's amazing. It deserves that spot. It's my #5, but ADITL is such an amazing song it's well deserving at #1.

I agree with that, Love You To is easily in my top 30 or so, but they put in Within You Without You so maybe they figured they already had one so… Other gripes that I have: You're Gonna Lose That Girl at 27, Because at 77, Eight Days A Week at 34, I Am The Walrus only at 33, and so on and so on. Revolver and Rubber Soul are well represented, but I'm Looking Through You isn't on there, and I kept typing and re-typing it.
