A strangely underrated song – It deserves it spot at number 2 on the album – it’s probably one of their better deep cuts. Its one of those songs where there’s nothing really to fault with it.

One of Paul’s great vocals, imo. Takes the deliberate flattened 7ths of the vocal melody and echoes it with the relative minors of the chords, harmonically more complex than it appears. The middle eight is a wonderful trick that seems to suggest a calmer mood than the chorus but soon screams back to it. I can’t be sure but I suspect George learnt a lot from songs like this of Paul’s, although rhythmically he took a different path.

I included it on my list of favourite Beatles songs. John on the electric piano and Paul’s vocals are so energetic and rockin’. Really is one of their catchiest songs.

The first Beatles album I ever got my hands on and had exposure to (which was a Christmas present) was a compilation “Rock n Roll Music” Vol 2 so these songs hold a special place in my heart and The Night Before is track 5. I love this song and it doesn’t seem to be held in much esteem by other fans I’ve spoken to but what a great vocal. Paul seems to be singing in a much lower register than usual which gives it much more power and shows the richness and versatility of his incredible voice. Listening to this song still takes me back to that first time I became wowed and then mesmerised by the sheer talent of The Beatles. It’s a great place to visit.

Ooo, ahhh, I hate to do this, but I’m 99.99% certain that that “Yesssss” is almost definitely John…

I’m not sure the ‘Yesss’ was John…….Could easily be either……Especially as Paul’s vocal was double-tracked……..What makes you pretty sure it was John?
John and George did the backing vocals……And this was technically John’s 2nd but in reality first real piano part……He could have got carried away with himself if the piano and vocals were done simultaneously…….But I still lean towards Paul…….
And I must add I should know.…..When the song was written I was delivering his morning papers at 57 Wimpole Street …….I’m practically the 5th Beatle.
PS. Never actually saw him or Jane there…….lazy sods still in bed while I was slogging my guts out on a trade bike before school.

Can I just add to this discussion the following possibility? It could be Ringo.
It’s always sounded more like Martha to me. (She sang the ahhhs in A Day In The Life , too).

To be honest, I’m not sure if it’s John (though I do lean toward it being John, I’m definitely not 99.99% certain); just thought it would be amusing to see the responses if I said I was almost certain…

The first “yesss” is definitely Paul. A half-hearted “yeah” later on sounds like Ringo. It’s, actually, easier to tell on the original 1965 mixes than the (redone) ones flooding the market since ’87: the original is drier-sounding and the separation of the stereo version gives more “space” between the instrumentation and voices (making one able to isolate one channel to pick it out cleanly).
I have a stereo tape version of the U.S. Help ! soundtrack and, I like to experimentally listen to just the left side during The Night Before because the electric piano (on the right) was always so distorted on the American (Capitol submaster) copy.
I will play the game Existence to the End ;)
