A lot of People seem to really dislike this song, and i wonder why? It is a Great song that was improved by the Strings and Choir of Phil Spector, that is very memorable and has beautiful lyrics. What about this song do people dislike?

I hate The Naked version because it isn't the same take as I'm used to and because It has lyrical changes., When I want it sans Strings, I check the Anthology 3 version on YouTube.

It's Beautiful. I liken it an Operatic performance by Paul McCartney

I'll tell what's beautiful: For No One , Here There And Everywhere , Martha My Dear , I Will , etc. etc. Perfect McCartney compositions, not tedious McCartney boredom trips.
You all will have read that Dave Dee is no longer with us. But Mickey and Titch and I would like to carry on the good work that's always gone down in number two.

It's just sappy. It's the equivalent of a slice of chocolate cake with chocolate and caramel sauce and fudge ripple ice cream with a pound of sugar dumped on it.
And this is coming from someone who really appreciates Maybe I'm Amazed, I Will , and Here, There, and Everywhere.

I like it because it describes a very poignant moment in my life.
So I can't tell if it's sappy or not. It works for me. It was for long, long time my favorite Beatle song.

Finally someone who agrees. Is the poignant moment too personal to share with the BB? I'll give you Apples

Well I think I have said it before so…
I was in love with a guy, we were engaged and he broke up with me for reasons he didn't explain. He just said it was the best for both of us. He was not a jerk at all, the situation was truly terrible for him and his family. When I came back home I was totally heartbroken. I mean it, totally heartbroken. I think I lost like 8 kilos because I didn't feel like eating or even getting up.
Just a few days later, for no special reason, I was listening to this song and when I heard “You left me standing here, long long time ago, don't leave me waiting here lead me to your door” I just broke in tears because that's what I wanted to tell him. And even today, when I hear the “and many times I've cried, anyway you'll never know”, I feel tears because I think of him, and also I think of my deceased Mom.
So there you go. That's the story.
Edit : Something has the same effect on me. And funny enough I heard these 2 songs live with Paul in the concert last May and I didn't feel sad or like crying. I just enjoyed them.

I personally think the strings and the choir elevate the emotion of the song. But I am a string player, so I could be a bit biased on that part. To me it doesn't seem very tedious or long at all. I think it's one of those songs that even though Paul didn't like it, it's a great song anyway.

I like the song but not what spector has done to it. The best takes is i think the one used in naked because it has no bass errors and a nice organ solo. But I don’t think that strings are wrong at all, but what spector did was too much it sounds like good night, I don’t even hear the piano anymore in some parts. I think the perfect version of The Long And Winding Road (and i think if let it be hadn’t had the no overdub stuff martin would have produced it like this) would be the 31st January take (naked) orchestrated in the way Golden Slumbers is. Anyway it would be nice if there were a version of the let it be album produced by george martin (like the let it be single version)

The Spector mix isnt too bad if not played too often, the worst offence Spector made to the beatles catalogue was turning Across The Universe into an unlistenable borefest dirge. There are a few really nice moments, 1 being after the bridge and orchestral solo the louder drum immediately after “But still they lead me back to The Long And Winding Road “.
My favourite is the Anthology 3 basic take, the bareness of the performance gives it a more emotional feel.
Not a big fan of the Naked version, the solo is pretty dull for a start.

I’ve just listened to the Good Evening New York City version, I think that’s the perfect arrangement and that’s the way the arrangement of the studio version should have been
