To the extent that I’ve thought about it, I’ve always assumed that CM was indeed Bill himself, that the narrator is being contemptuous about how the cowardly Bill feels like a big man when he’s got his gun, and so the “Captain Marvel” appellation is sarcasm.
I’ve read a lot of comic books, so it never even occurred to me that John wasn’t talking about the superhero character. But now that I hear your explanation, I agree with it.
By the way, I’ve never liked that line, I’ve always found it slightly embarrassing, thought it was kind of dumb that Captain Marvel would show up. But maybe I’ll start to appreciate it more with this new insight.
By the way, I always used to think it referred to the Fawcett hero Captain Marvel (now called Shazam because of licensing issues). Although the Marvel hero of that name (the original male version) had been introduced recently by that time, so it’s possible that version might have triggered John’s lyric.
