What’s your favorite Beatles bass lines?
Here are some of mine (with no special order):
– Do You Want To Know A Secret
– You Never Give Me Your Money
– Sun King /Mean Mr. Mustard
– Polythene Pam /She Came In Through The Bathroom Window
– Think For Yourself (*fuzz lead part)
– I Saw Her Standing There (*it’s not Paul’s riff, but it workes very well into this song)
– With A Little Help From My Friends
– Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds
– While My Guitar Gently Weeps
But also my top 3 for sure:
3) Hey Bulldog
2) Rain
1) I Want You (She’s So Heavy)
I apoligize if I have forgot some great bass lines.

Well, about “I Will “, it’s a bit special, because it’s not a real bass line or I would’ve included it in my list. It’s Paul singing deep bass harmonies in different keys. John has referred to it as “vocal bass”. “And You Bird Can Sing”, I know it’s good too, maybe I should have included it myself, but I didn’t have so much time left since I was going to watch a program on TV :p After all it’s an amazlingly simple bass line to deal with. “Drive My Car “, not pretty much to say about it, it’s based on the guitar pattern through out the song, but it’s played a bit differently. However, I love how the bass comes in at the intro. “When I’m Sixty Four”, well I think it sounds good, but too simple build in my opinion. Now I remember that I forgot to include “Getting Better ” into my list. Cheers!

I’d have to give the most creative award to Something or possibly Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds , both of which are extraordinarily meticulous and inventive basslines. The most technically difficult to play is probably Old Brown Shoe . I’m often hesitant to call Rain and I Want You (She’s So Heavy) “basslines” as such because they are heavily improvisatory rather than pre-tailored for the song, although excellently played.

“Hey Bulldog ” is in my Beatles Top 5. Just found this on You Tube.
To the fountain of perpetual mirth, let it roll for all its worth. And all the children boogie.

With a Little Help FMF, Something , Lucy
(in “Into the Sky,” the main character witnesses the laying down of the Lucy bass track)
Honorable mention to many, many more bass lines. I never noticed the bass in “Old Brown Shoe ” – I didn’t buy the “Ballad of J & Y”single and hardly ever played the “Blue” Best of the Beatles). I’ll give it another listen.
No one has mentioned “Ticket To Ride ” (or “She’s A Woman “)

I sat down tonight to play along with “A Day In The Life “, and while it’s all just Paul messing around in the key of E for the most part, I never noticed how fast it’s played. When you just listen to the song, his playing feels casual and relaxed. But when you try to play what he was really doing, it’s a flurry of notes that’s hard as hell to keep up with.
E is for 'Ergent'.

I’ve never had the opportunity to start on drums although I would like to. In decreasing order of talent for me: bass, guitar, piano.

I nominate “Helter Skelter ” as the best bass line not performed by Paul.
