Please Mister Postman and All My Loving . Writing letters isn’t really a thing anymore now that we have cellphones and apps that make long distance calls free.

Her Majesty and the part of Penny Lane about the portrait of the queen in the pocket will now be frozen in time in the 2nd Elizabethan age.

I suppose Taxman is dated lyrically by including the names of the Prime Minister and Leader of the Opposition at the time and the current, 1966, top earning income tax rate. Particularly the names of Wilson & Heath date the song , but it is still a brilliant song. Maybe it would have been better if they had used names like Ah Ah Prime Minister and Ah Ah Chancellor?
Oops, think this one was mentioned earlier.

The names continued to be appropriate for quite a while (until 1975):
* In 1966, Wilson was the PM while Heath was the Leader of the Opposition; and that was the case up to 1970
* Then from 1970 to 1974, Heath was the PM while Wilson was the Leader of the Opposition
* Then from 1974 to 1975, the roles reversed again: Wilson was the PM while Heath was the Leader of the Opposition
I think the 95% top rate of income tax was only for one year (1965-66), and it only applied to significantly high earners. The Chancellor was Denis Healey at the time; he was later asked if he regretted it, and he replied: “I think so, yes. The main effect was to get people to invest abroad rather than in the UK, which was bad.”
He commented: “… what I learned as Chancellor was that the rich can nearly always find ways of avoiding tax that are legal, and in any case the amount raised is very small. And it does encourage people to leave the country.”

What I like about Beatles songs for the most part is how they are eternal, as love, heartbreak and imagination are just that. It’s remarkably how timeless most of them are when you look at it, and those that aren’t have charm – and it’s to be expected given the period of time that has passed.

Not so sure about the portrait of the Queen in the pocket, as I’ve always taken that as a reference to our money which, coin or note, has a portrait of the Queen. Into the ’80s, over 30 years into her reign, I was still regularly coming across coins with her father’s portrait, and as cash becomes less used, it could be that our current coins and notes may be remembered more for being those in circulation as we increasingly move to a cashless society.

Yes, KCIII mentioned that he didn’t want the transition to his portrait on money and stamps to move too swiftly because it wouldn’t be friendly to the environment.

I thought Misery and Anna (Go To Him) sounded dated the first time I heard them in 1964 (when I was only 10). I’m sure my impression was that the Beatles were a lot older than they actually were (especially when I found out John was married).

Indeed, the whole PPM album has a sound that just hearkens more to the immediate pre-Beatle pop era, all that cavernous reverb, instruments buried under voices….it can’t help but sound ‘dated’ to my ears – not surprising that their earliest recordings should have aged the most, by definition
Paul: Yeah well… first of all, we’re bringing out a ‘Stamp Out Detroit’ campaign.

I don’t listen to the early LPs as much as I used too. I find the Red 1962-66 LP does the trick, and even then I may skip Love Me Do
But I can watch that 1st US Concert in Washington, no problem…
