You never left my good graces for debating the Beatles with me! Regardless of whether or not we agree, you’ve got my respect!

Debating the Beatles is a major part of what this forum is about. That being said Baby’s In Black is a beautiful song and I love those harmony vocals.

I really like ‘Baby’s In Black ‘. The lyrics and music are so sad but with a bite of hidden bit and George’s solo is cool, plus it doesn’t do the song any harm seeing how much fun they had playing it live (the intro on the ‘Real Love ‘ single is probably my favourite of all of John’s, and he has so many).
Considering how much more praise and admiration ‘EDAW’ got/gets, it’s a bit of a wonder why the Beatles refused to play it live, even in the US, opting for ‘Baby’s In Black ‘ instead.
(Paul’s waltz at the solo is beautiful.)

Attention @Ahhh Girl there is McCartney tongue action in the above clip! Seems to be a tricky bit to sing and play the end of that middle eight! It’s hard to appreciate the culture of music the Beatles were swimming in at the time, where songs like Baby’s In Black fitted perfectly into expectations, so don’t be too hard on yourself @SpecialCup, at this distance I’m not surprised that some songs sound a bit dated. But for me it’s a highlight of Beatles For Sale , and a classic example of the sad country song, country being the big influence on the album.

Deeply upset that two of their very best covers, and two of my favourites from With The Beatles , (Till There Was You and Devil In Her Heart ) are below the abysmal I Wanna Be Your Man .

Onwards!
168 (153*, 6.12) Anna (Go to Him)
167 (154*, 6.16) Not A Second Time
166 (155*, 6.2) All I’ve Got To Do
=164 (158*, 6.32) Honey Pie
=164 (158*, 6.32) P.S. I Love You
163 (159*, 6.36) Tell Me Why
=161 (161*, 6.44) For You Blue
=161 (161*, 6.44) Misery
=158 (162*, 6.48) Blue Jay Way
=158 (162*, 6.48) Piggies
=158 (162*, 6.48) Roll Over Beethoven
A lot to disagree with for most people in this batch. Personally, I’m outraged Tell Me Why is this low, it’s easily in my top 10 songs ever. All I’ve Got To Do , Blue Jay Way , Piggies , and Roll Over Beethoven all should have been higher, IMO. I’m also surprised at For You Blue ‘s high rank, I don’t see it as a very special song. There were 13 tens given.

We are getting to the point where every song I feel like every song needs to be higher until I see the next batch.
164-158 stand out as the best streak of songs yet.

I agree with you @The Hole Got Fixed regarding Tell Me Why . That is a gem. I love all of the songs above, with the exception of Not A Second Time ,which I can take or leave being honest. Blue Jay Way should have been lower down the list, such a good song!

With all due respect, @ewe2, I think you have me wrong. I am not unappreciative of the culture of music surrounding and informing the Beatles, nor am I unfamiliar with a wide variety of musical styles of different periods, including before and during the Beatles’ era.
My issue with the song is not that I think it sounds dated, because “dated” is a term that doesn’t really register with me. I have been listening to older music my entire life so it is natural to me, just as watching silent or black and white films has never jarred me because I’ve been doing it since youth. The problem with “Baby’s In Black ” is that they were trying for a “style,” which they did often, and they missed the mark this particular time. I agree that they were going for “sad, mournful, simple country plea” and that by itself is no problem. The execution is what is weak, in my opinion. I do carry higher expectations for the Beatles than most any other modern era pop artist.

Ugh, Father Mac, I can’t believe what I’m reading. You can take or leave “Not A Second Time “? It’s friggin incredible, a 10, alongside “All I’ve Got To Do .” “Misery ” and “Blue Jay Way ” are not far behind. It is utter craziness up here in this thread, I swear.

Not A Second Time is probably the weakest track of this bunch. A travesty to see it ranked above Baby’s In Black.
But seriously there have been some really great songs coming up early,

Father M, certainly the more voices and opinions on this thread, the better!
I, for one, am glad our feud is back on @sir walter raleigh because I have already composed two songs about it, “Canon Poll Blues” and “Baby’s In Blech.”
Surprised people ranked “Piggies ” so high.
Keep ’em coming, Hole. You are a hero to all!

Great way to get in my good books. Thank you very much and thank you again to everyone for voting!
I shall keep them coming:
157 (169, 6.5) Maxwell’s Silver Hammer
=152 (163*, 6.52) You Really Got A Hold On Me
=152 (163*, 6.52) There’s A Place
=152 (163*, 6.52) Every Little Thing
=152 (163*, 6.52) What You’re Doing
=152 (163*, 6.52) One After 909
=149 (164*, 6.56) Love Me Do (album version)
=149 (164*, 6.56) Only A Northern Song
=149 (164*, 6.56) You Can’t Do That
148 (165*, 6.6) Don’t Bother Me
I’m quite surprised at Love Me Do ‘s album version being below the single version. Few people gave a differing score here, and it happens that the album version version was slightly less popular. I’m also annoyed Maxwell’s Silver Hammer , Only A Northern Song and Don’t Bother Me weren’t higher, but I’m dumbfounded You Can’t Do That wasn’t higher. It’s a decent song, and I didn’t think many people had much hate for it. 15 tens were given this round.
And what the hell is You Really Got A Hold On Me doing so high? It’s the most laboured song I’ve ever heard…
A quick question: would you rather me get the results out a bit faster (i.e. every 2 days) or keep posting them every 3-4 days, for more suspense? I don’t mind either way.

YOU LEAVE ‘You Really Got A Hold On Me ‘ ALONE BRO, I’LL FIGHT YOU!!!!!
Also I love how everyone is saying “I thought that would be higher”, there is only a finite amount of songs, they have to come somewhere and would you honestly be thrilled if ‘Baby’s In Black ‘ was higher than say ‘Here Comes The Sun ‘?
Anyhoo, when you’re posting could you tell us the song that got the most 10’s in each round? It would be interesting to see.
I also support the posting of results every 2 days, we’re still in the 140s so it’ll take us quite a while to get into the top 50, at the rate we’re currently going at.
