Well folks, here it is! The results of the Beatles Bible 2018 Canon Poll! Firstly, a huge thank you to all 26 people who voted, without you, these results would mean so much less!
And thank you to the 3 people who voted with a phony username…
The total possible score is 250, but for most songs, at least 1 person did not vote. The scores will be formatted like so (obviously this isn’t an actual result:)
47 (187**) Hey Bulldog
The 47 means it came in 47th place (out of 220). The 187 means it received 187 points altogether. The amount of asterisks mean the number of people who didn’t vote for the song, in this case, 2. And of course, the song title is last…
EDIT: I realised I forgot to include the average. It will now be formatted like so:
47 (187**, 7.68) Hey Bulldog
The 47 means it came in 47th place (out of 220). The 187 means it received 187 points altogether. The amount of asterisks mean the number of people who didn’t vote for the song, in this case, 2. The 7.68 means the average score given (not counting blank votes) was 7.68 And of course, the song title is last…
I will include my commentary on each of my posts in a spoiler, to start a conversation about the latest round of results. I will release the results in batches of 10 (or in the case of a tie, the first number larger than 10 that doesn’t split a tie), and then when I get to the top ~20, I’ll start posting in batches of 5.
There will be a 2-3 day gap between each batch of scores, because like last time, I expect there to be some conversation about certain songs’ placement!
This thread is for the discussion and posting of results. I will include an up-to-date copy of the results as they stand in this first post every time I post a new batch of scores.

Here it is, the bottom 10 songs from the 2018 poll:
220 (104*, 4.16) Little Child
219 (105*, 4.2) Wild Honey Pie
=217 (106*, 4.24) Matchbox
=217 (106*, 4.24) Maggie Mae
216 (112*, 4.48) Dig It
215 (115*, 4.6) Dizzy Miss Lizzy
214 (117*, 4.68) Revolution 9
213 (118*, 4.72) Komm, Gib Mir Deine Hand
212 (119*, 4.76) Mr Moonlight
211 (120*, 4.8) Sie Liebt Dich
Interesting to see Wild Honey Pie is no longer at the bottom. There were six 10s given, all to different songs. Very surprising to see that the German versions of 2 very popular songs come in the bottom 10… Maggie Mae and Dig It aren’t terribly surprising additions, because they are so short (but they’re not bad!!) Honestly, although I agree with where Revolution 9 came, I thought it would come higher, because of the amount of praise it gets around here! But, I can’t finish this commentary without talking about Dizzy Miss Lizzy . I can’t work out why it gets so much hate! There were quite a few scores of 5-8 for it, but the same number of 1s…

That list of 10 doesn’t surprise me really. Re Dizzy Miss Lizzy : I’ve never understood why that finished the Help ! album. Surely Yesterday would have been a better closer? Anyway, thanks for the update @The Hole Got Fixed

Even though Dizzy Miss Lizzy isn’t a fantastic closer, the song itself is in question, not really the placement on the album. That’s why I get annoyed when people hate on it, because the song itself isn’t terribly awful, much like Mr Moonlight .

Dizzy Miss Lizzy is meant to be a closer like Twist And Shout and Long Tall Sally , there’s no mystery there, but perhaps the mystery is why so many Beatles fans don’t know that? Revolution 9 still yet to be understood, which is sad but not unexpected. And what did Little Child do to anyone that deserved that hate, that’s an odd result.

When listening to the Beatles I almost always listen to an entire album, rarely to individual songs alone. When filling out the poll, I listened to each album and associated A/B sides chronologically more or less, so I considered the songs in that context because it was natural to me.
I feel “Dizzy Miss Lizzy ” is a let down of a closing to Help !, which has so many great originals and shows the Beatles expanding their songwriting further into different sounds — folk, beat/soul hybrid, guitar effect-laden ballads, etc. “Dizzy” isn’t awful but sounds like a rehash of the shtick that was already done with “Twist And Shout ,” “Money,” “Slow Down .” The Beatles were writing their own originals far superior to their cover attempts by this point. To me, even outside the context of Help !, it doesn’t rank high among Beatles songs.
I think “Wild Honey Pie ” and the German songs deserve to be a little higher. I would’ve ranked “Dig It ” much higher if the album had used the semi-extended jam from Let It Be the movie.

The average is calculated by
(sum of all scores)
———————————-
(number of all scores)
Basically, it is an average of all the scores. A blank score doesn’t count as 0, it simply doesn’t effect the average in any way.

None of the songs are a surprise and often figure in the bottom section of Beatles’ song polls..
The German versions are utterly pointless nowadays aside from a reminder of how stupid a practice it was.
‘Little Chid’ is generally seen as being filler with very uncomfortable lyrics for today’s standards (I personally think it’s a very good filler and don’t let the lyrics bother me).
‘Dizzy Miss Lizzy ‘ is a good rocker but possibly the worst placed track in the entire Beatles canon. If 14 songs wasn’t the compulsory target for Beatles LP’s I doubt it would have been included on ‘Help ‘, instead eventually shoved on an E.P..
‘Dig It ‘, ‘Wild Honey Pie ‘ and ‘Maggie Mae ‘ are often berated as unnecessary annoying additions which add nothing (I like them but they are nothing special).
‘Revolution 9 ‘ gets lots of complaints because it is what it is and not what folk want it to be.
‘Mr Moonlight ‘ is regularly voted the worst Beatles cover whereas many simply skip ‘Matchbox ‘ (I like the latter but prefer the BBC version).

This isn’t a criticism, @The Hole Got Fixed, but it certainly does have an effect. It’s why I asked the question. There’s a big difference between the score divided by the amount of people who voted for that song versus the total amount of voters.
An overall score of, say, 120 given by 15 votes, would give an average score of 8, while if divided by all 26 who voted, it would have an average of 4.61. (That is, if I’ve remembered my working-outs right. It’s been a long time.). Point is, excluding the 11 (in my example) has as big an effect as including them.
The methodology will always affect the result.

Yip.
The average only works if the basic workings are the same.

All I’ve used is the basic average formula, so the basic workings are the same.
It’s time for some more results:
210 (121*, 4.84) A Taste Of Honey
209 (123*, 4.92) Honey Don’t
208 (124*, 4.96) Slow Down
207 (120**, 5) The Run-Out Groove
=205 (126*, 5.04) Everybody’s Trying To Be My Baby
=205 (126*, 5.04) Thank You Girl
204 (128*, 5.12) Hold Me Tight
203 (135, 5.19) Good Night
202 (130*, 5.2) Ask Me Why
201 (131*, 5.24) Kansas City /Hey-Hey-Hey
I’m less surprised about this round of results. In fact, the only surprises for me are Honey Don’t (which I thought would have been slightly higher), and The Run-Out Groove, which I thought would have been a scapegoat like Revolution 9 . There were nine scores of 10 given, three to the same song, and the rest were spread out.

All I’ve used is the basic average formula, so the basic workings are the same.
For an average to work across all the scores it needs to be arrived at by dividing a variable (the score) by a constant (in this case, the total amount of voters, 26).
The average for The Run Out Groove should be 120 ÷ 26 = 4.61 (I used 120 as a score in my example). Instead, correct me if I’m wrong, you’ve excluded the two non-voters and gone 120 ÷ 24 = 5.
Taking the song below it, Slow Down , which should have an average of 4.76 (124 ÷ 26) but instead you have 4.96 (124 ÷ 25).
Your average for The Run Out Groove is the average for songs that were scored by 24 voters;
Your average for Slow Down is the average for songs that were scored by 25 voters;
Your average for Good Night is the average for songs that were scored by 26 voters.
So far, you have presented three different sets of average scores.
Without a constant, they present the average only for those songs which have the same amount of voters.

When I saw your post, I actually took the liberty of asking my maths teacher (we’re currently doing probability and statistics in class) what he’d do in this situation, and he said that while both points are valid, he’d probably go with my method, due to the inconsistencies with the number of voters. The problem we have is, and the main reason which caused him to choose my method, was because 1 person only voted for 6 songs. He made a point of highlighting the fact that if that person had voted for all of the songs, or not voted at all, he probably would have choose your method.
