The mods have had lots of conversation about the use of the words “favorite” and “best” when they are part of the title of a thread. The overwhelming majority of those threads end up with the meanings of the two words blended.
I would say that this particular voting round is for “favorite”.
ITSWD, do you have an idea of how “best” can be teased out from “favorite”? how people can think differently to pick “best” instead of favorite?
Would it be possible to do a poll on which songs we thought made the most impact on the world? I don’t know.

Favorite is one you like the most.
Best is what most people like the most.
You vote for you favorite and the result is the best on the forum.
Favorite is just you. Best is multiple.

“Best” = the consensus’ favourite, then?

I think that one could say “so and so is the best guitar player ever” and they could mean that he is a technical virtuoso. But it is possible that while he can play faster than anyone in history, or over his head, or behind his back, his playing lacks a certain “something” that makes me love his music.
So I think “favorite” is better than “best.”
“Best” is just a way of making us vote for something we don’t really like.

I did this once for ITSWD/Faceo, began compiling a song by song ranking of the canon following NZBeatlefan’s lead, and now here it is again?!
I’m still too indecisive!!!
…my votes’ll be in soon.

So I guess this will give me an opportunity to listen through all the records.
Sounds like a good idea… If the compilers are curious as to when my submission will arrive, locate the ‘How Long Would It Take To Listen To All The Beatles Songs Or Whatever That Thread Is Called’ thread.
Edit: After clicking that link, I want to say how cool that poll is. Very professional looking AD40 and RN.

I want your votes, KITE!
Oi, @Mr. Kite, feckin’ vote, man, vote!
Apologies for interruption to normal service. Ran out of credit.
Interesting conversation. The point I was making was merely that there are more consistent opinions about John songs, good or bad, not that he had the edge. Paul may well be doing slightly better with his songs getting less agreement.

Woo-hoo! I just voted.
I’m just waiting to see whether AD40 or RN will send me the PM asking me verify if I have voted. I hope it’s RN, I’m a bit of a fan. And AD40 ain’t bad. Good idea she had with that Google form. Very nice. Thank you so much, Anna. I like the way that works. Anyway, have to go and ask some people other than myself to confirm they’ve voted…

parlanceI say in speeches that a plausible mission of artists is to make people appreciate being alive at least a little bit. I am then asked if I know of any artists who pulled that off. I reply, 'The Beatles did'.

I agree …….
Luke Donald, (who I’m awake and watching now in The US Open) is my favourite golfer.
Currently he isn’t the best.
A few years ago he could claim justifiably to be the best.
He was never my favourite because he was the best.
With a sportsman like Donald we have a lot of quantifiable evidence of ‘bestness’. He or she wins the most often, runs the fastest, jumps the highest.
With a chess player like Magnus Carlsen, ‘bestness’ is evidenced not only by being a world champion but by also being awarded a chess rating ……. That rating rises and falls on his week-in week-out record against other rated players. He’s currently the strongest player ever to have lived. There are factors that contribute to this judgement of his ‘bestness’………Had Paul Morphy or Capablanca had the same access as Carlsen to regular world wide tournaments and the vast amount of theory held on computers and the computer’s own superior to human playing strength…… then their retrospective chess ratings would be higher.
….But best in sport is quantifiable ……..
With artists so much more subjectivity is applied. Is Hendrix technically the greatest guitarist ever……..? There are 10 year olds today that play his stuff as well as he did. He’s more likely to be judged, (and consistently is) a subjective best, based on being more people’s favourite
Is Rembrandt better than Picasso?
Astaire better than Jackson?
Is John better than Paul…….or George?
It’s impossible to say without subjective opinion being applied as to who’s ‘best’
It’s the same with the songs.
Judging your favourite songs in the canon is a more honest question to be asking ourselves than what is best.

Today, I walked three steps away from my desk and stopped abruptly. It as at that point I asked a co-worker, “what did I get up for?”. Three flippin’ steps! Thank goodness it wasn’t because I had to pee.

Keep preaching – my choir robe has two shoulders – no waiting. For the past 5 years, I’ve been banging my head against the wall for the past 5 years trying to get people to use the word “favorite” instead of “best” for the past five years.
Why did I just get up? I really must stop banging my head against the wall.
