Hey, at least he shared your animus for Hold Me Tight . He can’t be a complete nincompoop.
I say in speeches that a plausible mission of artists is to make people appreciate being alive at least a little bit. I am then asked if I know of any artists who pulled that off. I reply, 'The Beatles did'.

That’s standard Beatles law, you learn such truths on day one, second class.

I guess the first class is consumed with the study of Pete Best, huh?

I know we are still in 2017, but 2018 looms…
Is anyone (apart from myself) interested in partaking in a 2018 Canon Poll? It’s been almost 3 years since the last canon poll here, and many different faces.
I’ve got 8 weeks of holidays now, so I’m more than happy to fill in some time by making the poll, if anyone wants.
Thoughts?

Sounds a lot better than the 2017 non canon poll as it involves songs that I actually know about. Go for it, I recommend having 3 options for voting, good meh and no, so it doesn’t get too complicated. Also are we including the 2 reunion songs in the poll and what about the B side of Yellow Submarine . I say it should be your call since you’re the one doing the list.

Actually, to re-do the Canon poll, there is nothing that actually needs doing apart from asking @Starr Shine? to fire up the 2015 poll list, and change the date to 2018.

Well, we should decide what’s included in the canon before we make or revive a poll about it…
And also, we should decide upon the order the tracks are presented in the poll. Once I saw DO and AG say ‘Go for it’, I went for it, and got halfway though – and decided to order it by date recorded (or date the basic track was recorded), as per Lewisohn. But does that sort of ultra-chronological order appeal, or do we want to keep the order SS? used in her 2015 poll?

Keeping it the same would allow for comparisons. If we do the poll every few years, we can get trend data.

We have already had the argument about what is canon, and we have a definition that makes sense. Are you really suggesting we go through the same old arguments again?
The canon is the canon. It can’t be added to or changed. Only the catalogue can be expanded and/or changed, never the canon.
Change for change’s sake is never good.
And as AG has said, it prevents a comparison between opinion then and opinion now.

So does this mean we’re sticking to boring old alphabetical order because if we are then I’m not voting but if we are doing The Hole Got Fixed’s way then I’m all in although hopefully when he separates the single and album versions of Let It Be he puts the album version after I Me Mine as everything on the album version that wasn’t on the basic track from the single version was recorded on 4 January 1970.

The order the list is presented in is of no relevance. Alphabetical is something many find easy. There are all sorts of different ways you could present the list. In order of starting recording date; in order of last recording date; in order of release date.
Suggesting not taking part if the poll is not presented in the order you like is somewhat petty. I certainly wouldn’t refuse to vote if the list were presented in any of the other three logical approaches.
After all, what matters with something like this, is not the order of the songs at the beginning of the process, but their order at the end of the process.
The main point being made here by me, and others I think, is that there does not need to be another debate about what is and isn’t canon, and that whatever order it is presented in, it should contain exactly the same voting options and method as the 2015 to allow direct comparison.

I’m for using the conventional order for canon albums with Past Masters at the end.

The one advantage I would suggest that the A to Z does hold, is that when there are more than one version of a song, it reminds one to score the success of each version rather than just the song.
It is easy to forget the other version, and which you prefer, when they’re separated within a chronological list of some form.

Keep it to the 2015 vote songs and who cares how it’s organised, as long as all the songs are there surely folk are capable of rating them. Does it matter if ‘Tell Me What You See ‘ is placed between ‘Love Me Do ‘ and ‘Because ‘?

As you can see, @The Hole Got Fixed, we’re all happy for you to conduct a repeat of the 2015 poll, and to offer any help needed, we just don’t want it messed with too much. How are you feeling about going forward now you’ve seen the opinions?
The poll will definitely be re-run in 2018 now you’ve suggested it. Are you still wanting to take the lead role by running it?

I’m more than happy to conduct the poll! I’ll do everything in PPM , WTB, AHDN , BFS, Help !, RS, Revolver , SPLHCB , MMT, WA, AR, YS (side A and B), LIB , and PM 1 and 2 (please correct me if I’ve somehow stuffed that list up), and due to popular opinion, I’ll make it alphabetical.
My dad just said he’d be happy to settle any ties (didn’t Joe’s kids settle ties last time?), as he knows the entire canon well. Does anyone object or have a better idea for settling ties?
And one last thing: how soon in the new year do we want the poll? I can release it before the 7th of Jan, or after the 17th of Jan. I don’t mind!

You can find the list here, @The Hole Got Fixed. It includes a few items you might not have thought of. It should also be noted that side 2 of YS is not included. May I suggest taking Starr Shine? up on her offer to reboot the 2015 poll form as that already exists. It’ll save you having to do it again.
If you check the 2015 poll results, you’ll find ties were included. They were excluded in the poll before it, and the order ties appeared in was decided by the pollster and a younger sibling. There was quite a bit of annoyance when it was revealed as most felt it was not an accurate reflection of how people voted.

Ok then, that makes things very easy, thank you very much! I’ll tell my dad he’s not needed. I’ll PM you, @Starr Shine? for the form.
Reading the discussion for the 2015 poll – people not ranking everything was a factor. Do you wish me to take the average vote, instead of the total votes, to remove that issue? Or does that look too much like change?
