I agree George could be very witty.
There was an interview with the boys and a comedian ………..(I think Ken Dodd)….and he was asked would he join the group because he had the hair for it and Dodd says, “I would need a more pop name……something earthy”
Cue George……Flat dead-pan he says……..’Sod’

“Send John out first; he’s the one they want.”
~ Beatles Bible Canon Poll
2015If I may, a little history behind choosing that sig… I’m reading Tune In and I’m at the part of the story where “we’re more popular than Jesus” has been in the wind for awhile, along with all the record burnings and all the threats… As they’re landing in Memphis, Lewisohn aptly describes the palpable tension aboard the plane (after a terrible flight) amid the dark concerns for their safety in the Heart of Dixie. The door opens and there’s this pregnant hesitation to deplane.
Cue Mr. Harrison.
In spite of all the praise heaped on Lennon for his rapier wit, I’ve always found George to be the sharpest knife in the drawer.
Excuse me, but do you have some weird misprint of Tune In? My copy ends on 31 December 1962, years off reaching the “we’re more popular than Jesus” debacle. I’m expecting to find Lewisohn tackle it in the second volume, Turn On, not published until around 2020. If you’ve got a misprint of Tune In that includes the “Jesus” incident, please let us all in on what Lewisohn has to say.
Whatever you were reading, it definitely wasn’t/ain’t Tune In.

Wow.
It’s a damn good story from wherever you got it from. If it’s untrue, it’s certainly in character.

Article from the LA Times about the incident. It may be merely passing along urban legend created by others; who knows? I have seen the same reference more than once, however.
I say in speeches that a plausible mission of artists is to make people appreciate being alive at least a little bit. I am then asked if I know of any artists who pulled that off. I reply, 'The Beatles did'.

Same here. That’s one of the reasons why he is my favorite.
By the way, aren’t we due for the next set of songs today? Is there supposed to be more than three days passed before we get to the Top 25?

So, Twist And Shout reigns supreme so far as cover versions go, and by a very long way. Part of that is surely the mythology around its recording, but it’s also one helluva performance. 15 songs make up these ten positions, which leaves ten songs and ten positions – therefore, despite all the speculation, there are no ties in the top 10.
The next results (positions 10-7) will be posted on the 24th.

George has three tracks in the top 10, John has 5, Paul 1 and then there is the Abbey Road medley. I think thats right.
Edit: It’s not, George has two.
Edit #2: I was wrong, George has three, four John tracks, one Paul, one John and Paul together and one which is both John and Paul but separate (if that makes sense).
The ten remaining tracks are in the spoiler for those who want to know. If you dont want to know then don’t look.
Abbey Road Medley – Paul & John (+ George)
A Day In The Life – John & Paul
The End – Paul
Here Comes The Sun – George
I Am The Walrus – John
In My Life – John
Norwegian Wood – John
Something – George
Strawberry Fields Forever – John

Looking at the rankings there are some what i would consider bizarre and unexpected outcomes.
- The two German tracks place higher than three English language tracks; Bad Boy , Matchbox and, most surprisingly, ‘Thank You Girl ‘, which is a Lennon/McCartney original.
- ‘Day Tripper ‘ comes out top of the ‘Past Masters ‘ tracks.
- No ‘Revolver ‘ songs are in the top 10, i’d have argued strongly before the results were announced that this would not be the case.
- Mentioned and discussed before but a lot of what are generally considered to be Paul’s most popular Beatles tracks have gone. And i would never have thought his highest placing track (where he is viewed as the sole lead vocalist) is what it has turned out to be.
Folk looking in might think we are a weird bunch. If i didnt know the folk behind the results i’d be asking for a recount.

I notice a slight George bias on the board generally and thought his big three would do well. Loyalty and dues to the underdog too maybe played a part…..But they’re great songs……..Better than Eleanor Rigby it seems.
Never considered I Saw Her Standing There would be so popular…….But my biggest surprise is Revolution .
As for the top 10, I’m flattering us all but perhaps with The End , (and many others) we’re showing our deep knowledge of the Beatles’ canon. The fab four’s swan song…… all of them giving it large……..and John summoning the courage to ask Yoko to keep her nose out of it, just for this one ensuring the boys could relax….And the canon crowning Shakespearian couplet……Conjuring up everything they meant….. and still mean to us.
But overall there can be no arguing with the results.
Another group of voters would give very different scores…….and I suspect so would we on a different day………I know I would reconsider a number of my votes.
A couple of last points.
1. That we all take it so personal when a song falters shows our love for their music…….Every song, (even Act Naturally ) has a fan.
2………………Er I’ll save my last point for the final results.
