Hi Folks!

Well, here we are, my and Annadog40’s 2015 Canon Poll.

It’s not “Ultimate” or anything, and doesn’t aim to be. This is just a snapshot of forum opinion on the EMI recordings The Beatles issued between their first single in 1962 and their break-up in 1970. Hopefully this will become a semi-regular event, annual or bi-annual, so that we are always updating the views of the forum membership.

This vote has much in common with IveJustSeenAFaceo’s poll. You score each recording individually based on your opinion, however you come to that opinion — whether based on how much you like a recording, how important you think it is, or whatever else comes into play so far as you’re concerned.

You are not ranking these songs against each other, but attaching a score of 1 to 10 (10 being highest, perfection) to them based on your opinion, and all we want is your opinion on each recording.

There are two ways to vote this time around. Created by our very own, and very wonderful, Annadog40, there is a Google doc. It scares me, as does all technology, but I am assured it works, and it’s how I’m going to vote. If you’d prefer to do it differently however, PM me your vote, and I will ensure it’s included.

This poll will not become the long, drawn-out affair that Faceo’s became.

Voting is now open, and will be for eight weeks. Voting will close on Tuesday 14 July. The first results will be published on 22 July, with all results published within (approximately) 3 months of that date.

Neither Annadog40 or I consider this as belonging to us. We are merely facilitating something for the forum. This poll, and its results, belong to the forum.

The results, as soon as we have them, will be copied to a mod. They have our full permission in advance to publish results should we fail to keep up with our PROMISE to you about how we will conduct this poll on your behalf.

Not identical to Faceo’s list! We know, and we have discussed it. All 217 “song” recordings are included.. You don’t think there’s much difference between the Ringo and Andy White versions of Love Me Do , we’ll know. You think the ? version of Get Back is better, album or single, we’ll learn.

So, all 217 are here. But our list is 220! Three additional items that are on those albums, but aren’t always recognised, or treated separately.

1) The Run-Out Groove: from Sgt. Pepper and you can include the dog whistle should you wish (I’ve never heard it myself!). Consider the looped versions for this, the way they expected it to be heard.

2) Can You Take Me Back? the link track between Cry, Baby, Cry and Revolution 9 on The Beatles (White Album ). Often treated differently but rarely included in things like this.

3) Abbey Road Medley. You’ll find this right at the end of the list. Is the whole better than its parts?

I now hand you across to AD40, so that she can explain our Google doc, and how to link to it…, along with any comments she wants to make about what a barsteward I am!. “Do this! Do that!!” Sorry, AD40!

We will — or, at the least, I will — be back with a new poll at the beginning of next year. “The 2016 non-Canon Poll”. So don’t worry that anything’s being missed. You’ll get the chance to vote on everything…

Now, the poster you’ve known for all these years, may I introduce the one and only Annadog40…

Here is a link to the Google voting forum

Votes are 1-10 with ten as highest the only thing that is required is your display name so if Silly Girl decided to vote, she would put down Silly Girl in the display name box. After the vote is cast, then You will recive a PM from me or Ron Nasty confirming that you vote. You must respond to that PM or your vote won’t count. You do not need to put your email or any other information other than your Display name.

I’ve pinned this thread so there is no chance it will get buried over the next 8 weeks whilst voting remains open.

I'm Necko.  I'm like Ringo except I wear necklaces.

I'm also ewe2 on weekends.

Thanks to all!

Can the voting be done in increments? In other words, can you peacefully vote for a group of songs and then come back another day to vote on another group – or do have to vote on all 217 at once?

I will try to participate. I’m going to have to review a lot of songs if I want to make honest decisions.

There is no problem with your voting in several stages, or changing your votes should you want to.

You will receive a confirmation PM each time you enter a set of votes, or make changes to your votes, which must be replied to for those votes to count.

What if I can’t remember certain songs (most likely because they’re bad and I don’t listen to them)? Can I simply not give them any score?

@Oudis No problem with not voting on particular songs. The only required element is your username. Though, alternatively, you might choose to revisit songs (nearly everything can be found on YouTube if you don’t have something), remind yourself how bad you think they are, and score them accordingly.

The more complete the sets of votes we receive, the more accurate the placings in the results list will be.

So, we just click on the link, score thirty songs, close the document, open it again the next day and vote for another twenty, etc. etc.?

What an incredible undertaking by @Starr Shine? and @Ron Nasty!  Thanks you two!  It was so easy to do, and just running through the list makes each song resonate in your head–a real pleasure.  Also, it’s not as hard as you think to honestly rank them; the process allows you to express your true feeling without concern about influence, repercussion or fear of reprisal. For instance, I discovered about myself that no matter how great an early cover was performed, I just don’t feel the same way about them as I do an original composition. And, I overcame my Hey Jude  shame.  I’m just not that crazy about it, despite its general reputation as one of the greatest pop songs ever.

All hail AD40 and RN! apple01 apple01 apple01 apple01

I say in speeches that a plausible mission of artists is to make people appreciate being alive at least a little bit. I am then asked if I know of any artists who pulled that off. I reply, 'The Beatles did'.

@Oudis If voting in stages you will be opening a new voting form each time, so would need to keep track of what you have and haven’t voted for (a full reference list is available under the spoiler in post #1). Unfortunately no voting method is perfect.

Should anyone want a copy of their scores, feel free to PM me. I’m making a copy of each person’s scores as we go along, so it’s no problem to PM your votes to you, should you want a record.

Thanks to all who have voted so far. I’m not going to say how many, but it works out at more than one a day. A very good start. Looking forward to more people joining in. The totals are looking most interesting at the moment.

As noted in another thread; also not one of my favourites – love the first few minutes, dislike the  last few.

Sorry if I’m being obtuse but how do we vote? Do we have to send a PM to @Starr Shine? with the full list? I thought I had seen a link but can’t find it now.

My first try at voting I thought I’d failed to send correctly……..So I did another one and sent that a day later. Nice Mr Nasty sent me a PM confirming both had arrived….Both were different and both had songs missing votes…..He gave me the examples and said he’d alter the scores in anyway I wanted.

I felt sorry for causing him this extra work and said let the first try count……He actually sent me both votes for me to compare.

This message is to thank him publicly for the work he’s doing to collate all this and amend members cock-ups.

Thanks for voting, @Wigwam, and all those who have so far. I hope many more of you will vote.

I had some voting hiccups too. RN worked with me to get my votes registered correctly.
