Something Else review of this track.
Seeing as no one else has posted I will.
I’ve always liked the song. It comes across as one side of a discussion/argument. The force in John and Paul’s vocal as they sing “Tell Me What You See ” at the end of each chorus is really cool; the electric piano immediately after feels like they just wont let the matter die and so it kicks back in reluctantly and off we go again (like a tired argument) until there nothing left to say, no point going on. and it dies out exhausted and unresolved.
The guiro is such a cool sounding instrument.
On ‘Help !’ there is filler, and this is a great example, but its damn good filler, and filler that most bands of the time would have killed for.
Looking at wiki’s entry (source listed as Ian MacDonald’s ‘Revolution in the Head’) there are a few differences in the instrumentation compared to Joe’s.
Wiki has George playing lead guitar (Joe’s has no electric guitar at all) whereas Joe has him playing the guiro which wiki has down as being played by Paul.
Wiki lists Ringo playing the tambourine whilst Joe has it as John.
Interesting that there are such differences.

I learned something new about this song in The Gospel According to The Beatles by Steve Turner.
The following lyric,
“Big and black the clouds may be
Time will pass away
If you put your trust in me
I’ll make bright your day,”
is a reworking of a verse that was hanging framed on Aunt Mimi’s wall:
“However black the clouds may be
In time they’ll pass away
Have faith and trust and you will see
God ‘s light make bright your day.”

A brilliant example of how good total Beatles hackwork can be, absolutely nothing to it in the slightest yet it’s one of my favourite songs. I adore this and is a great illustration of just why I find ‘Help !’ to be such a fantastic album.

I’d be the one on the other side here… I probably feel the same way about this one as you do ‘Hold Me Tight ‘… Not even Ringo’s usual solid drumming could save this one… yikes…:-)

I like the song but i feel like this, and You Like Me Too Much are my least favorite off of Help !

Best not mention ‘Hold Me Tight ‘ around me.

The verse melody and harmony is one of my favorite pairings in music. No doubt the work of brilliant songwriters going to work and cranking out a great one.

To be completely honest, I don’t quite understand all of the love for this song. I do like it, yes, but I find some of the vocals a bit dull at times. Perhaps someone could convince me otherwise.

It’s my 2nd favorite Help ! song, only beaten by You’re Going To Lose That Girl . The mood is nice and relaxed and i love John’s Fender and how it’s gently strumming open chords, the electric piano at the end of each chorus is also a nice touch, it’s similar to Pink Floyd’s Breathe in that it’s a song in a relaxed mood but isn’t a ballad. As for the lyrics, it’s similar to Dear Prudence in that their both telling the listener to open up their eyes and see what’s around you.

I’m not a McLennonite, but this song feels to me, more than any of the other John/Paul duet performances, that they’re actually singing to and about each other; partly because of the closeness of their voices during their unison bits; and partly because the “look into these eyes now…” lyric bit looks ahead into the future, when J&P first took LSD together and stared into each other’s eyes for awhile…not to mention the time when Lennon removed his glasses and declared “it’s just me” to Paul, for reasons I forget…
Also: Are there any other Beatles tracks that begin with guitar upstrokes??
Paul: Yeah well… first of all, we’re bringing out a ‘Stamp Out Detroit’ campaign.

Wowsers, first time seeing this little tidbit. Makes the song so much better for knowing it. John’s childhood really was a huge part to his life all the way through.
