One of their most overtly political songs, and they definitely make their case with overall solid lyrics.  Like all of Harrison’s songs, the vocals and instrumentation are well done. Although, I do notice a conflict in which Harrison criticizes the excesses of capitalism with “Piggies ” while criticizing his top-bracket tax rate in this one.

George liked it both ways.

Some times my life it seems like fiction
Some of the days it’s really quite serene

Except he was really born under Aquarius

Wonder if Piggies or Imagine is more of a contradiction to the lives of the artists.

No, he’s definitely Pisces. I found the questions surrounding the exact time interesting, but you can’t claim Feb 24/25 is anywhere near Aquarius.

If he was born a few thousand years ago than maybe but the earth has changed and now on February 24/25 if you look at where the Sun is in the sky, you will see that the Sun was in the constellation of Aquarius.

People use star charts that are incredibly out of date.

I used a program called Stellarium that lets me veiw were things were in the sky at any time and on February 25 1943, the Sun was in Aquarius.

It really hit me this morning how much I like the idea of George taking on the persona of a Taxman to tell the tale in this song…instead of telling it from the point of view of the person being taxed. However, you end up being on the side of the person who is being taxed. Well played, George, well played. Smashing idea.

Indeed!

I’ve noticed that for the longest time… it’s written in the form of a persona poem, a dramatic monologue by the character the writer is trying to describe, which is so much more effective than if he’d just described the taxman in third-person.

Have A Cigar by Pink Floyd is similar, except that it’s sung from the point if view of a music-business-executive-type character. Actually, come to think of it, Pink Floyd– I guess specifically Roger Waters, but the others too– use that a lot.

There is a difference between the astrology you see in the newspaper and esoteric astrology.

I don’t believe that your life can be dictated and influenced by where the stars were aligned and because you happened to be born in October you are such a person. To bind large groups of people into having certain traits and being specific types of people in my opinion is nonsense. Others will believe differently.

I dont get mad. If folk want to believe it thats up to them. I can state my opinion about the subject tho.

The general rule is dont enter into a discussion on religion on a public forum, and certainly not in a thread on the topic of the Beatles song ‘Taxman ‘.

Do either have to do with the actual location of the stars? Other wise it’s a bit misleading since they say your born under one thing when your really born under something else.

It depends which system you use. Vedic astrology uses the exact locations. However, western astrology is still accurate if the person knows what they are doing. I know this from personal experience. A Vedic astrologer would not agree.

Does anyone else get the sense of a methodical calculating machine or an old-timey accounting clerk making methodical tick marks in a ledger when listening to this song?

It is very precise to the beat. It’s why Paul’s licks during the B sections are completely groovy, like a respite from the lockstep with the kick and snare.
