I guess im not *just* discovering this, but Paul’s Twin Freaks album often slips through the cracks with me. I was revisiting it, though, and am utterly obsessed with the remix of “Live And Let Die ” on it (which seems to be an unpopular take…?)
What I’ve read is that people find the repeating “when you were young” line in the background to be excruciating, but honestly? I think it sounds really sick!
As a younger fan of The Beatles, their music often stands out compared to the other music I listen to, which is a mix of shoegaze, indie folk, and aphex twin-esque ambient work, and I guess, in a way, I’m less of a Beatles “puritan.”
I’ve noticed that Beatles fans get really overprotective about keeping the songs as true to their original form as possible, and the same goes for solo endeavors, too, but I enjoy the experimental nature of this album as it lends itself well to what The Beatles, and of course, Paul McCartney , are all about??!
(also, this is my first post here! so that’s exciting!!)

@yokoapologist — I never heard of this effort by Paul! I’m listening to Live And Let Die now, and I like it! I have only one little complaint — I wish at some point he had sped up the frequency of the “when you were young” to twice as fast, then 4 times, and keep accelerating.
(I can imagine the Paul Is Dead crowd having a field day with this album).
Now today I find, you have changed your mind

Perfect thread to be revived as I wasn’t sure where to post this!
My friend recently sent me this live version of In My Life by George. I know that he was slated for his live performances around this time because of his hoarse voice, but it suits this bluesy arrangement so well! It’s like a completely different song but it works so perfectly.

It’s always interesting to hear when one of them does a song they didn’t originally sing lead on. He certainly makes it his own, doesn’t he?

I know this song is pretty popular but bear with me please
I heard Michelle for the first time the other day, and my mind was blown. It might be my favorite song from Rubber Soul now…
I’d only ever heard their more popular songs from that album (ex. In My Life , Drive My Car ) and when I heard Michelle , I fell in love.
then again.. I am a sucker for songs with french.

@norwegianwood Michelle actually won Song of the Year at the Grammys back in the day! I think it was the first winner even close to pop/rock.
You’d think that Yesterday would be the one to win a Grammy based on its enduring popularity, but no.
Love the chords in Michelle . I think Paul had the chords for many many years before he finally put words to them for Rubber Soul .

I love stories about people hearing these songs for the first time. I remember my first experience with In My Life . It impacted me hugely, washing over me to the point I was quiet for the rest of the afternoon, thinking about it and nothing else. It was almost hard for me to believe a song like that existed all that time without me knowing, and how hit my soul that hard decades and decades after it was first recorded. Its age made even it more poignant. It was perfect, and made me reflect on my life, past, present and future.

In an interview, James Taylor discussed this song and shook his head in disbelief, “They were only in their 20s when they wrote that!” He’s right — the wisdom in that song is more of an elderly man looking back on his life.
