Wow, thanks for mentioning the unedited version, it really sounds way better! Especially George’s voice!
Yeah. It’s incredible what atrocious thoughless editing and a crappy mixing job can do to a song.

Similar to the way George Martin could sprinkle his magic dust on a song to make it sound amazing, they did the opposite of that to Not Guilty on the Anthology. I can’t even explain why. It sounds terrible. The bootlegged original version is so much sharper and crunchier.

If I remember correctly Geoff Emerick did it for ‘Sessions’ and Apple simply shoved it on instead of going with the original.

This Boy . I discovered it a month ago from a live performance on YouTube, and was stunned by the harmonies. I’d never really delved deep into Past Masters (what a dumb name that is anyway, why didn’t they call it The Singles Collection or something) so it completely caught me off guard.
As of right now, I’ve not even repeatedly listened to most of the tracks on With The Beatles and Beatles For Sale (speaking of bad names) aside from my skimming over them briefly, so there may be a few tracks that stand out next time I listen. (All My Loving and What You’re Doing stood out the first times.)

That’s a good idea, you should definitely listen to them more closely! Until about a month ago I’ve only listened to them once too and considered them to be okay but not more. Recently, I’ve listened to them more often, though, and discovered that they’re real masterpieces! From a logical point of view, it’s kind of obvious that they are good because, after all, these are the albums the Beatles got famous with but in retrospect, they get often overlooked by their later stuff which is a pity. You Really Got A Hold On Me is one of John’s best performances as a singer in my opinion! And I Wanna Be Your Man is awesome too!

Yes I agree. While the later albums clearly outshine the earlier ones in every way, the early ones are still interesting listens. Though I don’t like I Wanna Be Your Man , I think it’s poorly written and boring.

This Boy is an awesome song! I’d say it’s up there with my favourite early Beatles tracks.
The video below always makes me laugh. For some reason Paul and Ringo look chubbier then usual. I have no idea if it’s something to do with the recording or not

I agree with your first statement: the Beatles gathered more experience over time, so logically they would get better. Your second statement: IWBYM is probably in my top 15! (not quite 10… I’ll grant you that it’s not the best song in the world, but it’s not boring!)

Quite possibly the most boring lyrics I have ever seen. I don’t know how you could listen to these and not get bored.

This Boy might be my favorite Beatles song right now. Beautiful song!
Here’s an absolutely adorable video of George watching the live performance!

Love the video, so refreshing to see George so happy looking back when so many have him down as hating every second of the Beatles.
Out of question, why does the audio go so out of sync when ‘This Boy ‘ gets near the middle eight?

That was cute, thanks, @GardeningOctopus!
@QuarryMan I Wanna Be Your Man is only two minutes long while the na na section in Hey Jude is about four minutes long. IWBYM hasn’t got the most exciting lyrics but it’s so full of energy! And, although it has nothing to do with the song itself, I love how it is placed between You Really Got A Hold On Me and Devil In Her Heart because there is a tom-tom solo of Ringo at the end of the former and at the beginning of the latter so that the two solos frame I Wanna Be Your Man . It’s just appropriate for a song with energetic drums like IWBYM has, IMO!
Back on topic: I’ve just consciously discovered the Anthology 1 version of Roll Over Beethoven and it’s way better than the With The Beatles version! I love it so much! What Ringo does with the Ride cymbal on this performance(I think it’s the Ride cymbal at least) is the work of a genius!

I don’t listen to a song for it’s lyrics (ok, well, I do occasionally, but not very often), I listen to a song for it’s music.

Wow! I’m listening to it for just the second time, and I’m blown away by the sheer amount of fills! It’s so, so much better than WTB version! Is it just me, but id George quite sharp in some lines?

Good catch, I never noticed that. The description on the video says the clip is taken from the Living in the Material World DVD, so I wonder if it does the same thing on there and it was an error with the broadcast?

Mull Of Kintyre . I am so mad that no one in my life has ever sat me down and said, “You must listen to this song!” I’ve only just found it due to the SiriusXM Beatles channel.

Chaos And Creation In The Backyard (okay, it’s an album, not a song).
Wow, what an amazing album! The three opening tracks really blew my mind away. Especially Jenny Wren is so awesome -I love everything about it: the usage of a duduk (Armenian woodwind instrument), the beautiful chords, Paul’s finger picking style, the lyrics,…
Another gem is Too Much Rain in my opinion which reminded me surprisingly much of Too Many People regarding the title.
This album showed me that I should definitely delve deeper into Paul’s discography, embarrassingly enough I only know RAM, McCartney, Band On The Run , Venus And Mars , and Chaos And Creation In The Backyard so far.
