Any songs you think they did better live than in the studio?
Also, please name the live performance that you like.
For me, Dizzy Miss Lizzy is infinitely superior in its live version, at the Hollywood Bowl. The lead guitar sounds like something from a hair metal song (which is rarely a good thing but in this case it is compared to the studio guitar), the backing is extremely heavy for 1965 and John’s vocal is fantastic.
I've been up on the mountain, and I've seen his wondrous grace,
I've sat there on the barstool and I've looked him in the face.
He seemed a little haggard, but it did not slow him down,
he was humming to the neon of the universal sound.

‘Boys ‘ and ‘I Wanna Be Your Man ‘ are better live in general; I can’t think of any performance specifically tho.
Actually, all ‘Please Please Me ‘ album tracks are probably better live.
Agree about ‘Dizzy Miss Lizzy ‘, tho my go-to is the ‘Real Love ‘ CD single as I love John’s spoken intro.

I forgot about the PPM LP, that one is basically a live album anyway so it’s not surprising they often surpassed it.

The only studio cut from ‘Please Please Me ‘ I can think of that might equal the live performances is ‘Twist And Shout ‘.

I absolutely love the live version of Roll Over Beethoven which is included on Anthology 1 – Ringo’s performance on the ride cymbal is from another planet! I’d prefer it to the version on With The Beatles any day, in fact to any other version, really.

I have heard some live versions of George doing Something . I enjoy them more than the studio version. Here’s an example.

Personally, I find the intro to ‘Something ‘ is needless as is the extended instrumental break, even George thinks it’s time to restart singing in the above video.
The Bangladesh performance was good.
And then there is this.

How about ‘I Saw Her Standing There ‘?

I always thought that ‘Baby’s In Black ‘ sounded better live… They always did it a bit slower onstage than the studio version which made it feel significantly heavier in just about every live version that I’ve heard… Even in 1966, while their enthusiasm for touring was waning, ‘Baby’s In Black ‘ continued to be a stand out live… love how Ringo turns to the toms during the final verse… excellent…:-)

Coming Up from Paul Is Live or back in the US because Wix plays the sickest clav part! Also their mix is a little louder and fuller with the full band in an arena.

I don’t really like The Beatles live music that much, mainly because their best songs were studio only and if you want to hear The Beatles live, you have to hear fans screaming but I really like the live vocals to Revolution .
If you're reading this, you are looking for something to do.

In response to Dark Overlord’s post: That’s one of the many things I love about the Star Club recordings (among which are many tracks which I would certainly select for this thread): the absence of screamy teenies. It’s a revelation hearing them rocking a crowd of mere dozens – all of them adults – without any preconceived notion of who they were listening to.

Ask me why. I love this track and think it’s so underrated. I love this live version because it shows how good they were playing live. The vocal harmonies are perfect, the start and stops perfectly measured, John’s singing is pretty accurate…not an easy one to play live anyway. I also like that this live version is a bit faster than the recording

I love the 1963 performances from the Swedish TV show, Drop-In. My favorites – the ones I prefer to the studio versions – are ‘I Saw Her Standing There ‘ @ 6:54 and ‘Long Tall Sally ‘ @#9:45. Ringo really rocks the kit at around 10:48.

An old thread but here’s another great live performance. I’m not sure if they ever did a more proper version of it, but the guitar playing is great.

I adore this. Easily one of my favourite Beatles covers and the original is briliant. Pleasing, a cleaner quality source appeared so it’s not as buried as in the above video.
No proper version was ever recorded so, unless a different performance surfaces from somewhere, Germany 1962 is all we will ever have.
The Star Club 1962 songs are really good in general. It’s remarkable how fast they power thru them. Here’s ‘Nothin’ Shakin’, which is also fabulous.
‘Everybody’s Trying To Be My Baby ‘ is fabulous live, much better than the studio version, which i really like for the instrumentation. Again, Star Club ’62.

Here’s a cleaner copy of ‘Where Have You Been’.
They were so f*****g good a live band. It bugs me at times how some people write they weren’t based on the later year tours when they were playing the same 11 songs night after night for 20 minutes in front of thousands of fans who had no interest in hearing them, instead spending the entire time screaming their lungs out.
