I like that snippet too. Though it wasn’t that early, it was the 1966 record. a-hard-days-night-paul-10

Here ’tis, I’ve started it from the beginning of the Podgie-Jasper bit:

There are many great moments on the Christmas Records; George thanking Ringo and then adding “we’ll phone you” after Ringo has given a funky rendition of ‘Good King Wenceslas’ is class.

John suddenly yelling “NOW!!!” in the ’64 message, actually John’s whole section from that is brilliant, as is when they go thru where they have been during the year and get lost.

The gentle piss take of ‘Yesterday ‘ throughout the 1965 one. You can tell they had nothing much to say during that one having outgrown the simple message to the fans.

After I recently discovered “Lonesome Tears in My Eyes “, I spent about 90 minutes listening to about 30 different versions by various artists, and playing along with my guitar (easy 3-chord song).  I still like the version of the retro-karaokish Dutch crooner Danny Everett (from the 2010 album Danny Everett and the Spectacles), because he slows down the tempo to a nice almost Hawaiian lilt.

However, Lennon’s singing has some advantages to any other version I’ve heard.  One of them I particularly like is a “song fragment” — the way he descants on the word “lies” in the phrase —

I can’t forget that you told me
So many promising lies…

— is very nice.

and how he sings the first time the “I can’t forget that you told me” thing when he says “toOoOld” , you know, that up-and-down thing he does… that’s great

Yeah, John does that well — but it’s not unusual; most of the other singers who covered that song did that too, including I think the original, Johnny Burnett.

I couldn’t find it now if my worthless little life depended on it, but I remember hearing a Carnival Of Light fake on YouTube and what really gave it away as a fake was that it included John’s “NOW!!!” from the Christmas message.

John’s ‘brbrbrbrbr’ in Slow Down is so what?! I like his whoop at the end though.

I always noticed this, but only just paid attention: the drums start this little I Feel Fine -esque Latin rhythm after the line ‘It’s way too early for the conga’ in Rock And Roll Music . What an awesome little touch.

I suppose this belongs in here, and I hope no one has mentioned it!   Approximately 1:33 into Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds (iTunes version), there’s a little slip up, and it sounds like a little “high” being said.  Check it out with the volume cranked.

Oohh, I didn’t know such a thread existed…

Well, George’s “sweet as you are” (at about 1:48) in Don’t you ever change, and I mentioned this in another thread – George’s (again) “she’s an angel sent to me” towards the end of Devil In Her Heart .

John’s “yeah” in Yes it is at about 2:04. Awesome!

I like how he pronounces “alerted” in WMGGW. I wonder why his accent comes out more while he sings than John and Paul. Perhaps the tone is just more nasal to begin with.

Short version:

I like the way John sings the words “real fire” in Being For the Benefit of Mr. Kite.

Long version:

The “real fire” comes at the end of a phrase that recurs with different words three times (I think) right before also recurring climactic lines like “In this way Mr. K will challenge the world!” or “And of course Henry the Horse dances the waltz!”

All the other recurring phrases preceding these have a rhythm to the words that flows logically —

“Their production will be second to none”

or:

“A splendid time is guaranteed for all”

— where those lines (coupled with their preceding lines leading up to them) have a rhythm like a toy soldier counting out beats on a snare drum — mechanical and sure and logical.

So too the line preceding the one I like:

“Over men and horses hoops and garters…”

But then we get:

“Lastly through a hogshead of real fire”

If you listen to it, you’ll see what I mean.  The “of real fire” is a bit stilted, almost intruding with a spoken, not sung, feel, rhythmically against the grain — and also sounding a bit unnatural even when spoken.

This might just be an artifact of that “predicament” some songwriters paint themselves into, where they come up with a lyric and try to force it into the rhythm already established in their head for the song, and end up pronouncing the words in a way you wouldn’t do normally.

Or it might be John’s genius at play here…

Either way, I like it.
