In 15 months I have listened to all The Beatles albums, most every one of their post-Beatles albums, demos/takes from the Purple Chick bootlegs, parts of the Get Back sessions, outtakes from John’s and Paul’s recording sessions, songs they wrote and gave away, covers of their songs, live performances…”
And I thought you had been listening to them for decades, just like me, @Ahhh Girl! How can one grow up in the 20th century not knowing about the Beatles? (No offense intended). I’m curious, what did you listen to before?
Looks like I’ve fooled a few people. I want an Oscar for Best Actress in a Supporting Role. I’ll take the Beatles Bible version of the award for this year if @Joe is presenting it.

It may be a little more complicated culturally, when we remember that for Elvis Presley, that Southern culture of Church and Gospel music was a deep influence, and yet he went on to evolve into a major influence on the Beatles himself. And Elvis is not alone in this (e.g., Little Richard, and many others). I think it’s more of a paradoxical thing, where two dissonant or opposing streams came out of the same well, so to speak.

Please Please Me , Like I Please You. Is John talking about Felacio?????
(Don’t blush, were all adults here)
I’ve been listening to this song and thinking about what you said here, @Bongo. Those very strong, suggestive, vigorous, emphatic, almost begging and teasing “Come on’s” from John could very well support your proffered interpretation.

It was almost certainly on John’s mind to strongly refer to being pleasured sexually in ‘Please Please Me ‘ and i’ve also read about how pleased John would have been getting “conceive” into the lyrics of ‘Ask Me Why ‘. Maybe best not to go thru everything John ever wrote to find any more examples.

Talking of ‘Ask Me Why ‘, along with the wonderfully tight stops throughout the song (posted in this thread previously) there is also the repeat of the line “i love you ’cause you tell me things i want to know” which is delivered so forcefully – the complete stop that follows is equally as forceful.
I see in the song ratings for the ‘Please Please Me ‘ LP ‘Ask Me Why ‘ is generally very low down, for me it would be very near the top.

As reminded by AG’s post in ‘The Official “Choosing Between Two Things” Thread‘ i adore the line “I’ll take my chances for romance is so important to me” in ‘Devil In Her Heart ‘ for its rhyming of “chances” with “romance is”, and George sings it so brilliantly.
Also love the two BBC performances of this track.

I thought i had edited the above post. Never mind.
John’s echoing of Ringo’s third verse in ‘Yellow Submarine ‘ especially “in our yellow”. Even as a young kid that was the bit of the song that always gripped me, there is just something about the way he sounds doing it. I love that so much. I repeated that about 7 times last night on my ipod, just skipping back.
It’s at around 1:59 into the video below.

The phrase “It can’t get no worse” from Getting Better has been stuck in my head for a few days. Because of it, I seem to end up listening to Getting Better every time I put on some music.

Been meaning to come round here for ages.
So… song fragments that really grab me…
ALL OF ‘EM!
No, just kidding. Seriously:
- That bit of Yesterday (first verse after the first “Why she…”) when Paul McSmoothvoice’s voice goes rough on the “I” from “oh I believe”. Makes the whole song for me.
- The counter-melody-harmony-thingy that John does on the second “Love never dies, watching her eyes” in Here, There And Everywhere . It gives me chills. (Wait , that’s already been mentioned upthread… Well, it bears repeating!)
- The rest of Here, There And Everywhere .
- Another fab counter-melody-harmony-thingy (acronym: CMHT) by John, this time on “…if I knew what I was missing” from You Won’t See Me .
- The beginning of Michelle , with those high bass notes under high guitar, very quiet, then this rush of breathy harmony vocal comes blowing into your face. Very effective.
- The second “Tight, yeaaaahhhhh!!!!” on AHDN , where John goes “under” Paul’s vocal with an “Oh” before continuing with regularly scheduled programming. I love it even more because it’s impossible to recreate when singing alone, live, while cooking.
- When the bass and tambourine joins the riff on “If I Needed Someone “.
- The backing vocal in Taxman under “If you drive a car I’ll tax the street”. Right after JP&G sing “drive a car” in unison, J&P go “caaaaar” again in harmony and it makes the previous “car” sound like “carc”.
- The beginning of No Reply , where the full glory of John’s double tracked vocal launches itself into your face. (Funny… “This happened once before”… coming after “I’ll Be Back again” on the previous album… anyway, I’ll Be Back on topic.)
- The Anthology version of WMGGW (which, if you’ve noticed, I REALLY dig) where George goes Harrisonic on “aleeeerted” from “No one alerted you”. Give it a listen, you’ll see what I mean.
- That bit of Ask Me Why where Paul does all kinds of high falsetto “ooohs” under John’s singing “…I love you, and I’m always…” etc.
And I think that’s enough for now. If I think of anything else I’ll Be Back !

I’ve got countless “heck yeah” moments when listening to the Beatles, most (or maybe all) of which will have been mentioned. Last night, just before I went to bed, I was listening to Everybody’s Got Something To Hide, and the part near the end, where the bass and guitar play a twin melody always gets me.
I love the twin guitar parts, or the parts where different instruments play pretty much the same. To me, that’s one of the things that made the Beatles so great. They didn’t just play together, they made magic happen.

Yeah that always makes smile, I think it’s a truly comedic riff, and then you get them all jabbering c’mon! You can’t not feel good. There are quite a few comedic moments on the White Album that I treasure, and perhaps that’s why it’s often my favourite.
* Wild Honey Pie . It’s completely silly, and that’s ok.
* The Continuing Story Of Bungalow Bill , so Captain Marvel zapped him right between the eyes-ah!
* Piggies , the last verse of course!
* The count-in in Birthday where Paul just goes aaaghhhhhh

In case you don’t know my story, I will share it with you here. Before 26 May 2013, I didn’t know The Beatles existed. I jumped right into the deep end when I found them. Cannonball!!! I’m quite overwhelmed. I’m sure I have soooooo many more things in their musical output that will hit me as time goes by. At least I hope so. Seasoned, multi-decade listeners say they still have things hit them they hadn’t paid attention to before. That sounds hopeful to me
You hit it right on the head. I’ve gone months/years without playing the Beatles and then you hear a song on the radio and boom, it hits you again and you start playing them over and over again. I’ve gone through Hard Rock 70’s, Heavy Metal 80’s-90’s, and still occasionally listen to those bands, but always revert back to the Beatles. Can’t say that about any other bands, (except Led Zeppelin), but even they are nowhere near the Beatles!

I’d definitely agree on that one. As a kid, I must have been exposed to Beatles music (albeit not consciously), because even though I knew a lot of their songs, I didn’t hear much else than classical music as a child. I knew their names and quite a few songs though, so I must have picked it up somewhere. I always considered myself a fan, but I never really dived in until fairly recently. Once I really started listening to all of their music, I noticed I already knew many of their songs. In fact, I even knew several by heart, but I had no idea who sang what (except for Paul because I knew some of his solo work) and I was utterly unfamiliar with all the hidden gems. You might say I’m a bit obsessed now, which I’m sure most of you will recognise. It’s so great to hear new things each time: a barely audible guitar part which just completes things, a killer bass line you never noticed before, messed up lyrics they kept in, turnarounds that really draw you in… I hope I’ll continue discovering new things for a long time, because it only shows how brilliant a band they really were!

This is pretty amazing, and yes you have a lot to hear. I’m glad you’re free to catch up on the bits of culture taken away from you though. As a fan you’ll go through phases of preferring some aspects to others and dwelling on a particular period for a while, as well as developing a kinship (if that’s not too bold a word) for songs that match your life experience. It is a very long and winding road, but as long as you get back something, you’ll never Carry That Weight because every little thing within you, without you is getting better.
