Hi @ieatglitter (great username by the way) and welcome to the forum. Hopefully folk will be able to help you with your questions on ‘Something ‘.
A couple of places online you might find of interest and help are musicologist Alan W. Pollack’s notes on the track and Joe’s entry on the song, located in the Songs section of this very site.

Thanks! I have seen Allan Pollack’s notes on this song. I’m not sure if I agree with his idea of what the song is about. I’m so confused by the lyrics at times.

Found a thingy of interest which I thought ought to be posted here.
At about 1:11 he says, ‘You know, like a counter-melody’, and I tried singing the main ‘Something in the way she moves’ melody along with his ‘How I love that woman o’ mine’ melody and it was
EDIT: That video I posted was made private, so I had to replace it.

Anthology 3 , disc 2, track 16: Something : Which guitar is George playing? I really like it’s warmth and brightness. Thanks so much.
(btw–is there any particular method that’s good for finding previously unreleased demos, clips, etc, online? I liken those little extras to catnip. They’re things just enough off the beaten track that you can hear how a song’s developed, the conversation on multiple takes, just little extras in general make old songs new and imbue extra little thrills 🙂 )
Hi @honey.eyed and @honeyeyedchild. You asked this question in the recording and musicology section, but I moved it over here because it’s a better fit. Then I realised (what I assume is) your other account had already asked the same question. I’ll leave it here anyway.

I think George was right to omit them in the final recording as they seem to jar the song. It flows better without them, going from the solo straight to the final verse.
The same could be said for his “While My Guitar Gently Sleeps” final verse that was omitted.

Thanks, Joe.
I kind of felt like I was knocking my head against a wall while waiting and hoping for the question to appear anywhere, lol. So sorry to have registered twice. That guitar’s just haunting me. It’s perfect (besides, I love the “dum, dum, dum, dum, dum, dum, dum…” as he’s working things out.) Why on earth knowing the make of that guitar–one way or the other–should pester me so, I’ve no idea why. With the Beatles, each guitar was so distinct. they were like they were Stradivarii.
It’s a mystery & I’m excited to know the answer! <3

T’is called BEATLEMANIA
A common affliction, in these parts. I know how it goes.
I agree, that guitar is really something (hahahaha see what I did there?) and I don’t know but I would have a guess at that lovely rosewood Fender Telecaster of his, as that’s what he plays on the final recording, and there are some bits that sound just like it. Not the main lead-bits, but the little accents in the back. It’s hard to explain.

It’s so resonant, you have to be right, Silly Girl 🙂 It has that buttery, mahogany warmth/smokiness! The pitch of the strings has a voice that stands apart, though, almost like a steel-stringed tenor Kamaka uke–so clear/crisp!
Just like George to be so enigmatic <3

No idea what the laws are in regards to copying comments from youtube so if this is against some weird internet law then apologies.
Not sure if the poster is being serious (i really hope not) but he posted this in the comments section of a youtube video of the isolated drumming from ‘Something ‘:
If it was Ringo playing on this track. I doubt it, though. See my comment above about Bernard Purdie. The sequence you indicate is the right one to focus on; it has Purdie’s fingerprints all over it. Ringo never had the chops or the timing to play a line like that.
I thought the lack of any intelligence in the comment deserved repeating and highlighting.

I recently learnt the solo to this song — it’s one of my top three guitar solos ever, so it pleases me greatly to be able to play it. It really makes one appreciate the finesse with which it’s played — it’s not extremely technical, but those tiny little slurs and things that he does, not to mention that ridiculous vibrato-fest () toward the end, are just so perfect. ERgh.
Also, the solo to ‘Learning How To Love You‘ sounds a bit like this one.

It seems like George’s best solos are fairly simple, with Something , Octopus’s Garden , The End (with John and Paul), and the album version of Let It Be being considered among his best. For me, it’s a hard choice, but I do think that Something is probably his greatest solo. I wonder Silly Girl, are you using a Les Paul to play the lead parts like George used on the record (John does the rhythm on his Casino) or are you using a different guitar.

Ha, a Les Paul! I wish. I don’t even have an electric guitar; I’m just playing it on my acoustic. It’s harder.

You should get an electric guitar. For me, because my father loved 60’s rock (mainly The Beatles, but also The Beach Boys , The Rolling Stones, Cream, Jimi Hendrix, among others), he had (and still owns) a Fender Strat that I learned how to play at the age of 6, so I used an electric guitar before I had an acoustic.
Maybe you should try posting more.

I’ve currently got my eye on a white Fender Strat…
