Offline So much for doing this daily. Unfortunately vacation has been very busy for me. I suppose it’s kind of fitting that the second one I do after She Loves You is Sie Liebt Dich . I get to be the first one to say something on this too.
Reading the article on this I noticed this interesting quote:
The resulting promotion of the English language around the world is one of [The Beatles’] most substantial, and least documented, achievements
Reminds me of how they wrote All You Need Is Love purposely to be simple so the message could reach the whole world, and the broadcast itself was seen by about a 10th of the world’s population at the time. And they even quote she loves you in this song. How circular.
Also obligatory hahaha “she loves dick” pronunciation.

Offline It’s that first line that jumps out, the “You thing she just loves me?” – instantly making the singer part of a love triangle, and not just the messenger. It’s a pretty significant lyrical change, I think, and I’m curious about the circumstances. But maybe I’m overthinking it…

Offline Presumably the lyrics were rewritten so that they rhymed when sung in German. Not sure too much thought was put into the meaning, as long as it made sense and didn’t deviate too much away from the original lyrics.

Offline I wouldn’t trust translators, here’s what She Loves You ‘s lyrics look like after they’ve been translated in Google Translate from English to German then back into English:

But what really intrigues me is the origin of the 2 songs:
It all started because Electrola (EMI’s German subsidiary at the time) somehow convinced Brian Epstein and George Martin that Beatles records would only sell in Germany if they were sung in German (which is a load of bull, as both I Want To Hold Your Hand and She Loves You had been top 10 hits there, with the former topping the charts on 1 January 1964). So they arranged for the songs to be recorded on 27 January 1964 in Paris (they had been playing quite frequently at the Olympia Theater so it made the most sense to quickly record these songs here). However, The Beatles (knowing how pointless this was) refused to show up, which pissed off George Martin quite a bit. So they showed up 2 days later to record these 2 songs and were also able to record the backing track to Can’t Buy Me Love with the extra time.
You’d think they’d just record a single instrumental take of each song followed by them recording the German vocals in as few takes as possible but that’s not what happened. Instead, they used the original backing track of I Want To Hold Your Hand and did 11 takes of the German vocals (even going as far as overdubbing handclaps) while recording a near perfect replication of the backing track of She Loves You in 13 takes (some say they used the original backing track but that seems about as accurate as the “Paul played everything on I’m Looking Through You ” theory) and did multiple takes of the German vocals.
But despite the sheer lack of need for these 2 songs, they somehow had a release outside of Germany, such as in the US where Komm, Gib Mir Deine Hand was the final track on the Something New album (very undeservingly IMO) and even made it into an episode of The Beatles TV show and Sie Liebt Dich was released as a single backed with I’ll Get You (just like She Loves You ) while in Australia, the single was released just as it was in Germany, although it failed to chart (the only single to do so in Australia). Hell, the 2 songs were even mixed in stereo and eventually included on Past Masters . Quite a lot for 2 tracks no one but EMI’s German subsidiary wanted.
