Many moons ago, I disliked this track and skipped it often.
On 16 May 2011, I started warming up to it. In a response to mr. Sun king coming together…

Changing your mind about, or warming up to a track does not make you stupid. It just proves you are becoming more open-minded (that’s what I tell myself anyway).I actually did not skip it while listening to the WA again last night. I’m still not a huge fan of it, but hearing the little bitties others in the Forum bring up is kinda fun.
Then, on 11 November 2013…

For years I never saw the point of ‘R9’.Recently, I find myself playing it more and more as it is growing on me. I only listen to it through headphones and pick up a little something new with each listen.
Last weekend while listening to it, I found myself tapping my foot to the beat. Yes, boys and girls, there is a beat. It took me sooooo long to find it, but I found it.
You know you are a hardcore Beatles fan when…

Of course there’s a BEAT, it’s the BEATLES!
sorry-not-sorry
I don’t listen to it very often but it’s great. I shall now have to start listening for this mysterious ‘beat’ you speak of…

The beat you’re talking about is actually Revolution 1 (Take 20), the story of Revolution 9 was that John decided to layer unusual sounds over the part of Revolution 1 that isn’t on The Beatles, hence why it is buried at the bottom of the song. Also, if you’d like here’s a survey aimed at Beatles fans born between 1958 and 1964. https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/KXKXBLN

I just did my listing for favorite to least favorite tracks for the album The Beatles a few days ago and I listed this song at the bottom. It has always been at the bottom for me and I skip it more times than not when it comes on. It kills the album for me and I skip it to move on to another song/album. I was just thinking that if it was placed as a ‘hidden track’ and it was after Goodnight and a silence (sort of like Her Majesty ). I think I could get into to it more because it would be placed as an illusion of being in a dream or sleeping.

You are correct. My prior reluctance to simply sit back and enjoy this track prevented me from feeling (sensing?) the beat for all these years.

The debate over whether this is a song or not was brought up in another thread. I personalty think this is since a song
a short poem or other set of words set to music or meant to be sung.
And there are words set to music.
I’ll let a poll decided it

Beethoven’s 9th has words set to music and its set to music but its not a song.

But why isn’t it a song? What makes Revolution 9 not a song?

Well in looking around on this here World Wide Web, most concur it’s a “sound collage”. But I voted song and reiterate what I said just above. Interesting debate though.

A sound collage is defined as
the combination of sounds, which may include vocal and instrumental sounds, to create a specific atmosphere or to accompany important moments of a scene.
and John himself said
Revolution 9 was an unconscious picture of what I actually think will happen when it happens; just like a drawing of a Revolution . All the thing was made with loops. I had about 30 loops going, fed them onto one basic track. I was getting classical tapes, going upstairs and chopping them up, making it backwards and things like that, to get the sound effects. One thing was an engineer’s testing voice saying, “This is EMI test series number nine.” I just cut up whatever he said and I’d number nine it. Nine turned out to be my birthday and my lucky number and everything. I didn’t realise it: it was just so funny the voice saying, “number nine”; it was like a joke, bringing number nine into it all the time, that’s all it was.
John was creating an audio picture.

I used to use the word ‘track’ and ‘song’ synonymously, because almost every track I listen to is also a song. I guess Revolution 9 is technically a Sound Collage, but also be referred to simply as a track, that way nobody gets upset.

I consider Revolution 9 a song. I also consider Two Virgins sides one and two songs. They’re still music, just under the genre of experimental.

Listened to this a couple of days ago and it was quite refreshing to hear.
If folk put away the want and requirement for a “[Beatles] song” and actually listened they might enjoy it a little more instead of grumpling (no error) that there is no chorus and you have to listen to Yoko speak.

I love this song! It’s one of the many bits of The Beatles (White Album ) that makes it my favorite album of all time.

I love the way “Revolution 9 ” fits into the sequence of side 4 of the White Album – how “Cry Baby Cry ” segues into the “Can You Take Me Back” fragment which then fades into “Revolution 9 ” and then the way the disorienting sound collage gives way to the saccharine “Good Night .” The whole is greater than the sum of its parts…which might be a good way to sum up the White Album in total.

Is it just me, or is there reversed guitar by George in this song at around the 2 minute mark because if so, then Joe forgot about it.
It sounds indian, yup. But it could be George or any other piece of indian music sample played by any other musician.
