Definitely prefer the single version. I don’t mind the sardonic “shoo bee doo wops” in “1” that much, but the horns are too lugubrious and strike me as unneccessary. Also, those two extra beats – “We-hel” – that John always throws in between “-ution” and “…you know” really irritate me by disrupting the flow of the song – a quirk that’s not so apparent in the single with its faster tempo. (But that’s just me and my personal petty prejudices against particular songwriting quirks.)
Paul: Yeah well… first of all, we’re bringing out a ‘Stamp Out Detroit’ campaign.

Gotta go with Joe. If you’re talking about the original version, or the softer version, it’s gotta be that newly discovered 11 min. mix for sure. But, being a heavy metal kid from way back, it was actually songs like “Revolution “, “I Want You” (She’s So Heavy), “Helter Skelter “, “Yer Blues ” and “Tax Man” that got me into the heavier sounds that the music world has to offer. So, I gotta go with the rocker version!
Oh that magic feeling…nowhere to go!

Both versions are excellent, but the single version played from vinyl is AWE-SOME.
I agree good sir. It sounds like the guitar is going to tear the speakers right in half.
Having said that, I think they both have great qualities, although I’m sure that John found the single version more appropriate.
I now declare this bridge open!

Actually, I thought John wrote “Revolution 1 ” first. He wanted to put it out as a single, but Paul (and the others, but mostly Paul, I think) thought it was too slow. So, John kept the lyrics and melody, but turned it into (one of the) most raucous single(s) the Beatles released. (The parentheses are for adjusting what I say to match your point of view.)
But I like “Revolution 1 ” better. My brother Polythene Dan(not his real name) says that the single version is more upbeat, but I think “Revolution 1 ” sounds happier. I also like the harmonies(as an alto who rarely gets the melody in choir), which, for me, are a main attraction of the Beatles.
If I seem to act unkind, it's only me, it's not my mind that is confusing things.

Well, I’ll just revive this here thread. I prefer Revolution 2. The single was the superior version. Paul made the right decision by vetoing Revolution 1 as single.

I am sure it does! I have a yellow submarine ringtone. Everytime my phone goes off while I am shopping with my friends, people stop and ask me to send my ringtone to them! I am quite amused when a crowd of 50-60-year olds crowd around me asking for it!
Now THATS funny

Actually, never do that again. Especially not quoting the whole thing. Never do that. NEVER. But really, the best version is the video, featuring the shoo-be-do-ba’s which I love, and the speed of Revolution .

I was listening to the single version of Revolution on Love and it sounded very…incomplete. The vocals sounded like it was the first take of the song and it seemed like John didn’t understand how to sing some of the words. The only thing I see going for it is the fuzz guitar sound in the beginning.
But when I listen to the album version, it sounds very polished and complete.

This is tough. I like the more relaxed, bluesy style of Revolution 1 . But I love how Revolution rocks it.
So which one “wins” with me? *drum roll, please, Ringo* Revolution .
And after reading the entry here on Beatles Bible and the quote therein, I’m with John. Only expect me at the barricades with flowers, not violence. So yep, when you talk about destruction, don’t you know that you can count me out.

I agree with you about the fuzz guitar and I like the idea of a rockier and rawer version of the song (which the single version offers) but I don’t like John’s vocals on it. The double-tracking coming in at random times sounds really messy to me and the White Album version does seem better produced and I think the slower tempo works well with it.
Although I say this, I do like both versions quite a lot.

Revolution . Even my mom prefers that version surprise, surprise.
We had a thread asking which version of the song people prefer so I brought the two threads together. I liked you topic title better, @Evangeline, so I applied it to the thread when I did the merge.

Guess I’ll go out on a limb here and say…
Because *Ching chingachinga You take two? Okay.* is too good to miss, and also I recall being quite obsessed with it backintheday when I was about nine. I also like John’s more laid-back vocal.
Little Girl prefers Revolution .
