Me and Madi were talking about this song the other day and how you can’t even listen to the song anymore after watching this video. The video makes you cry like a baby. Well, it made me and Madi cry.

Shame on you for making me bawl!! I hate these kinds of videos – yet love them at the same time… like the “In My Life ” video at the beginning of the Anthology series thing:

It didn’t make me cry but it’s a really nice video indeed. I like how they included Olivia there.. that was nice.

I always see comments online saying people don’t like that Real Love was transposed because John’s voice sound funny. I completely disagree. John always was doing this. Some of Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds has John’s voice transposed, as does I’m Only Sleeping , Strawberry Fields Forever , and more.

I couldn’t agree more. It’s a great tune and George kills it in the solo (as in does a nice job as opposed to wrecks the tune!).

Real Love , to me, sounds like a John Lennon song, edited to the point where anything remotely John Lennon -y about it has gone. IMO the original demo is miles better.
Free As A Bird I do like though, I think the new parts compliment what John had already done, and it actually does sound like a Beatles song.
I think it's great you're going through a phase,

The reason the transposed voice fails to work on Real Love , is that the vocals were done on a piece of s**t recorder, not a separate track of Abbey Road ‘s many 4 tracks. The failure to make it seem in any way Lennonesque is true failure of the song. Hell, it might be their worst decision since, well, putting SFF and PL on the same single. But, Real Love ‘s a joke. Give me the demo any day.

Would rather listen to Real Love than FAAB. FAAB is too slow to the point of dragging.
The only thing going for FAAB is the harmonies which do add something to the song and is why the fan mix is so much better (John’s original demo + Paul and George’s harmonies (no lead vocals at all) + some guitar). Its obvious that it is was a work in progress/incomplete. And it appears that John had left it behind by the time of recording Double Fantasy , whereas Real Love was earmarked for the Milk And Honey sessions in 1981. He kept going back to it, altering bits and pieces here and there, adding and removing lyrics, which is why i think RL is better, but his vocal was ruined during the recording sessions in 1995 .
The guitar demo on the Imagine : John Lennon soundtrack is another delightful recording.

I know you say it ruins the original, but I say that when people cover Beatle songs. In fact, I’m a musician myself and I made an album of (almost) all Beatles covers, and I hate it how I played them. I look at Free As A Bird and Real Love more as John Lennon songs covered by George, Paul, George and Ringo. So they’re both amazing to me, Paul, George, and Ringo were sort of giving John a present; you may not like it, but it’s the thought that counts.

Was putting together the Real Love recording details and it hit home that John wasnt there in the 90’s. After days of all the beatles recording together on the 60’s songs, it was quite apparent that John wasnt about on Real Love (havent got to FAAB yet) when Paul, George & Ringo were building the song up.
Despite my reservations regarding the songs its nice to think that John would have been there and they all would have enjoyed meeting up and playing music together. There are some really nice classic beatle harmonies on those two tracks.
I need something to cheer me up.
(Ah the complete Oh Darling from the Get Back sessions, edited for Anthology 3 .)

So as not to be depressed, Paul, George and Ringo explained how they pretended that John was simply away on vacation when they did “Real Love ” and “Free As A Bird .”

I wonder how well that worked tho. It must have been lingering at the back of the mind at times and had to be swatted away before it became too difficult to continue. Maybe that was one of the reasons why they had long gaps between the different recording sessions; easier to get through by having other duties to focus on.

I think both Free As A Bird and Real Love are great. They bring me to tears, especially the latter.

Having no idea where to put it, and considering this is the Real Love thread, here is the demo Yoko gave to Paul, George, Ringo and Jeff who turned it into a Beatles recording. In my opinion it is far better in its original state.
