I’ve always liked “Piggies ” for it’s music alone – earnest folk-guitar strumming, chamber-music strings, harpsichord both elegant and sardonic (love that little blues lick that introduces the “In their eyes there’s something lacking”), distorted and manipulated voices of man and pig alike. And George’s vocal is his most playful and unforced on the album.

(And the Beatles didn’t need friggin’ U2 to “take back ‘Helter Skelter ‘ ” from Manson, but from Motley Crue – whose own “Helter Skelter ” cover was even more lifeless than U2’s)

Oasis does a pretty bad Helter Skelter as well.

Oasis does pretty bad Beatles covers in general. Living under the illusion that you’re like the Beatles doesn’t actually give you their talent.

I didn’t mind Oasis’s live Helter Skelter cover as it was at least listenable unlike their utterly dreadful attempt at I Am The Walrus (looking in youtube turns out they ruined it more than once).

Can’t imagine myself enjoying ANY Beatles cover by Oasis – other than maybe “12 Bar Instrumental” or “Cry For A Shadow” or maybe “Flying “.

I actually like their I Am The Walrus . I feel like Liam’s voice suits the song. Unlike Helter Skelter .

Does Liam use a similar kind of electronic-filter on his voice like John did on “Walrus”?

The version I’ve heard was live, so I’d take a shot at no.  He’s got a very very nasally voice.

I dislike Helter Skelter , one reason being the Manson connection, but also the song just doesn’t please me aesthetically.  That is to say, the sound kinda grates on my ears, to be honest.  It’s definitely my least favorite Beatles song.

But to get on topic, I’ve kinda grown to like Piggies more as I’ve aged (it still lies, I’m sorry to say, near the bottom).  I think the video of Free As A Bird helped me like it more, those kids were so cute.  I didn’t know the Mansons had a thing for it, that really sucks.  The female lead in the American film The (500) days of Summer says Piggies is her favorite Beatles song (and the boyfriend is like wth?) just to inject a Beatly moment.  But one thing I’ve been wanting to know – was Piggies the first use of the phrase “what they need’s a damn good whacking”?  I know it’s been repeated many times in tv and film, I think I remember a Monty Python skit, or maybe in the movie “…Holy Grail” as one place.

I thought her favourite was Octopus’s Garden ?

I don’t don’t like Piggies because of the Manson stuff. I never associate it with that, and I do like Helter Skelter (well, except for the last bit of that song anyway). Stuff like that just doesn’t ruin a song for me. Perhaps if it was associated with Hitler or whatever, maybe that would’ve changed the thing, but that’s not the case so what am I even going on about.

I can’t believe they preferred this over something like All Things Must Pass either. I’m not saying Piggies is a particular bad song, but ATMP beats it with miles. But, if I recall correctly, ATMP wasn’t recorded until somewhere in 1969. Perhaps you meant Not Guilty ? Or was ATMP already known during the recording of the White Album ? If you were talking about Not Guilty , I still agree. I think it’s still better than Savoy Truffle or Piggies .

I don’t know, I watched the movie a half dozen times, so I’m fairly confident it was Piggies , but I’ve been known to be very wrong when I was confident about something before lol.  Also I didn’t mean to say the Manson connection ruined the song, it was just one more contributing factor to my dislike of Helter Skelter .  Tbh I didn’t know the family had other favorites from the album.  That doesn’t change my opinion of them, so maybe the Manson thing isn’t a factor at all in my opinion of Helter Skelter .

According to the liner notes for Anthology 3 disk 2, George “frequently suggested this new composition [edit: ATMP ]” during the January 1969 Get Back sessions.  The version on Anthology is from 25 Feb 1969, so, you’re right about it not being recorded or apparently even suggested until early 1969.  I agree that it’s a far superior song to Piggies or Savoy Truffle , but then ATMP wouldn’t have fit with the “atmosphere” of the White Album , imo.  It’s a collection of mostly quirky songs, imo, while ATMP is a deep, contemplative song.  I don’t mean to degrade the White Album , quirkiness can be good!  And it does have some thoughtful songs, WMGGW being a prime example.  Maybe one of the gurus here knows when ATMP was actually written.

I think maybe you were talking to a previous poster when you suggested “Perhaps you meant Not Guilty ?”.  I didn’t reference any songs other than Helter Skelter and Piggies …<double checks>…and Free As A Bird ???  Or do you mean the phrase “a damn good whacking”?  I verified that the line is in Piggies .  Ok now I’m confused, and rather off topic, but feel like I contributed something meaningful…lol

Half of what I say is meaningless...

I feel good in a special way, I'm in love and it's a sunny day

She was saying that since All Things Must Pass might not have been written at that point, you might be referring to Not Guilty as one that could have been on The White Album

I love Not Guitly, that would’ve been better on the White Album than Piggies .

If I spoke prose you'd all find out, I don't know what I talk about.

If it was a throw up between the 5 George songs and 1 had to be omitted then i would have ditched Savoy Truffle for Not Guilty ; i dont think the switch between the two would be too bad for the running sequence and i’ve never been a huge fan of ST, its certainly not any better than Piggies .

Yes! That was what I meant.

He was right about ATMP though, it wouldn’t be right on the White Album , and not just because you know it like it has ended up, on George’s first album. It just doesn’t fit the style of the White Album . However, I still think it’s miles and miles better than ST and Piggies .

Back to Oasis: They also did Help !, Strawberry Fields, Noel did You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away and they probably did others too. They all suck. Well, I think he could do a pretty good YGTHYLA, but I don’t like the way he sings it like he does.

I actually like Piggies , although probably more because of the fact it reminds of that Pink Floyd style of storytelling about bankers and all that animal farm style stuff.

"White Album - My joint-fave Beatles album along with Revolver. They show the two sides of Beatles. Revolver's very controlled - even though it's also very innovative. The White Album's playful and almost ramshackle. It's like a scrapbook kept by a genius. Fantastic stuff."

I don’t unequivically love the song “Piggies ,” but I like it just fine. The melody is one of the more playful and inventive tunes that George ever wrote, the harpsichord is a perfect addition to an album that celebrates all things eclectic, and the lyrics are weird in a fairly good way. (The image of pigs eating bacon) I like that “one more time” coda, too.

One of my first impressions of the album when I bought it, before I even listened to it, was this: I scanned the track listing, and I noticed that there were three songs in a row with an “animal” theme: “Blackbird ,” Piggies ,” and “Rocky Raccoon .” That seemed cool to me then, and it still seems pretty cool now.

There isn’t love for Piggies because it’s sandwiched in the middle of a two-disc album.  Many people will inevitably just see it as filler for that reason.

Me too, especially the end of the song compared to the end of the book.
