I tried this with my brother, and thought it might be a bit of fun to get your opinions here. My brother is more into the Clash and the Sex Pistols than the Beatles. I played him:
Strawberry Fields and
Hey Jude (which he said went on too long).
Which 3 would you have chosen to introduce the band to a non Beatles fan? I’ll keep working on him!

Depends if they’re
a) a casual music fan, in which case songs like Something or Ticket To Ride .
b) a huge music fan, in which case the experimental stuff like TMK, SFF and ADITL are perfect.

I’d start with Do You Want To Know A Secret to showcase pure songwriting ability, I’d show I’m Down from Shae because it is crazy and hilarious, A Day In The Life , and Don’t Let Me Down from the rooftop.
I cheated by using four, but if I actually wanted to introduce somebody to The Beatles for the first time I would play a lot more than that.
"The pump don't work cause the vandals took the handles!"
-Bob Dylan, Subterranean Homesick Blues
"We could ride and surf together while our love would grow"
-Brian Wilson, Surfer Girl

The only one you need to show them is While My Guitar Gently Weeps . There are many Beatles songs where there’s one or more people who don’t like it but I’ve never met a person in my life who doesn’t like this song. In fact many people including myself love it and you could make an argument that it’s the best thing The Beatles ever released. If you need 2 other songs than Strawberry Fields Forever and Nowhere Man but chances are that one song will be enough for them to become a Beatles fan.

What if you could take a friend to the Concert For The Bangla Desh to see While My Guitar Gently Weeps live and he says “What band was THAT song by?!?” and you say “The Beatles.”

My brother would definitely fall under b). I’m just glad I never played him I Want You (She’s so Heavy). If he thinks Hey Jude is too long, that would have drove him crazy hahaha, although he would probably appreciate the guitar solo to be fair

An acquaintance of mine messaged me a few days ago, because he wanted to expand his Beatles knowledge. After working out that he wanted to explore some classics (but he’d heard all of their popular songs…), he asked for 15 songs to listen to. I chose 13 songs from Rubber Soul or before, because I had no idea what he actually likes…

That’s a pretty decent list. Did he tell you which of these he liked the most? Presumably, you now have a better idea of what he likes

Thank you very much! He hasn’t got back to me yet. I’ll ask him in a few days, to give him some time to absorb it all.

Wouldn’t have gone with the earlier tracks myself. If I had to pick 10 songs the average listener might not have heard that demonstrate The Beatles’ prodigious genius:
I Want You (She’s So Heavy)

He did say that he knows Revolver through to Abbey Road , thus why I chose Rubber Soul and before.
However, I like your list, except SFF and WMGGW are very well known…

I wouldn’t say they’re that well known. Most people unless they’re familiar with the songs already probably wouldn’t know them beyond a couple of bits of melody.

I love your list @QuarryMan, it’s very well chosen as there are many different aspects of the Beatles music shown: great harmonies in This Boy , John expressing his innermost feelings through songs like I Want You, Strawberry Fields Forever , YGTHYLA, and HIAWG, and their experimentations in Tomorrow Never Knows .
If I wanted to get someone who already knows the hits into the Beatles, I would play these four songs:
1.) Here, There And Everywhere (to show beautiful, floating songwriting and Paul’s sweetest voice)
2.) Happiness Is A Warm Gun (it’s experimentative, very expressive, shows John from his most creative side, and it is one of their heaviest songs, imo)
3.) Love You To (this gives an impression of George’s Indian influence music. I had to really struggle with myself whether to include this one, I Want To Tell You or The Inner Light )
Actually, I would also play Being For The Benefit Of Mr Kite , even if this was the fourth song because it’s just too awesome not to play it.

1- Glass Onion
2 – Happiness Is A Warm Gun
3 – I want you (She’s so heavy)
And as a bonus track (because after listening to those three he/she will be willing to listen to some more) and a definitive proof of how great they were:
4 – You know my name (look up the number)

Thanks 🙂 I think the thing that stops people really getting into The Beatles is how daunting their discography is, probably about 15 LPs worth of tracks. So to get someone into them without losing their patience you have to pick tracks that demonstrate their range of styles, emotions and eras.

OK, so if your brother is into those two bands (me too!), he like songs that are up tempo and not very long & drawn out. For him, may I suggest:

Someone who’s into Pistols and Clash, hmm. They’ll be into GUITARS and not so much VOCALS.
1. Twist And Shout – great cover and vocal and rhythm. Not overly harmonic so as not to frighten them away.
2. Taxman – more great rhythm. This is tricky since there’s so many songs like this that would also fit the bill from that period! A bit more vocals.
3. Birthday – its raw and doesn’t outstay its welcome. Revolution single would also be a good choice. If you get the chance to repeat this, then I would consider something more vocal-based like Because .

It depends on what style of music they like. If they like classical music:
1. Yesterday
If they like rock:
2. Taxman
If they like quiet, low-key, amazing music:
1. I Will
2. For No One
If they like the classic early-Beatles-type sound:
If they like modern music:
2. Revolution 9

Depends on the situation and what they like already, but my go-to albums are Revolver or The White Album (I know they’re albums and not songs, but usually when I’m introducing people it’s in my car so we got time). I usually skip some songs, and I tell them about the band and the songs while we listen, which I feel gives them a better appreciation and makes it more interesting.
