I don’t know, but I think at least a part of Martin’s regret was based on the sales of PL/SFF comparative to the awful ‘Please Release Me’ by Englebert Humperdinck, who’s huge, freak sales prevented this classic Beatles’ 45 from topping the British charts. Their first such failure since ‘Love Me Do ‘ times. ………After all that work and knowing what leaps had been made with these two tracks I mean 7 key changes alone in Penny Lane …..and then having to suffer what beat it…….. it must have stung……Perhaps still does, that it didn’t make No.1
‘Not my fault you buggers……my hand was forced……See where that got you…..Englebert bleeding ‘umperdink……He’s probably never heard of ‘Hansel and Gretel!……Please sodding Release Me……Give him life and let him rot……..Probably stuffed my chances of a knighthood to’boot!!”
A miffed Martin I’d say!
I doubt he has many other Beatles related regrets…….Oh apart from a single disc White Album ……Perhaps Rev 9’s existence……Leander coming in for She’s Leaving Home …….
Feel free to add.

Gotta say one thing. Those 2 songs sure made the U.S. Capitol Magical Mystery Tour Album great. So much so, EMI finally decided to import it into the UK, thanks to them, plus Hello Goodbye , All You Need Is Love & Baby You’re A Rich Man .
A great year for singles & Albums in 1967!

The greatest single ever, IMO, Beatles or otherwise. Penny Lane is a great pop song, with lots of traditional complexity, key changes, wonderful chord sequence. Evokes old England beautifully, and evokes nostalgia through its throwback musical style. It is not so much a rock song as a song from the 30’s, beautifully rendered, and a worldwide #1 hit because of its catchy, jaunty melody. One of Paul’s greatest songs.
Strawberry Fields, on the other hand, is a visionary, complex, difficult masterpiece. I remember hearing this song for the first time in about 1969 when I was a small boy and wondering if I could even sing the song. It was too weird. Was there a melody there? I didn’t really like it in the beginning, but I loved Penny Lane . And I still do. But now, SFF has surpassed Penny Lane and every other song I have heard in my life. Paul was looking into the past, but John was looking far into the future with SFF. SFF changed music, Penny Lane didn’t. So therefore I give a big nod to SFF.
I couldn’t imagine this single on Pepper, and I wouldn’t want to get rid of Getting Better (great song) or Good Morning Good Morning (whence the hate for that song on this forum??? Always one of my faves, time signature changes, oddball lyrics, etc). Maybe When I’m 64 could have been a good B side, and they could have been put on PL and SFF instead. But SFF would have stolen A Day In The Life ‘s thunder a little.

I just saw this alternate video for Penny Lane which I hadn’t seen before. Wonder why it was made alongside the well known video?

Great video, @Leppo, and a new one on me, I think.
I’d suggest that maybe it’s an early iteration made to look at how the Liverpool footage worked with the song audio.

It’s in colour @Billy Rhythm. A VPN should let you in, the internet browser Opera has one built in.

I agree it’s very basic but the simplicity of it goes well with the song I think. I don’t suppose there’s any connection between the stated director Ian McMillan and the Abbey Road Iain Macmillan?

This isn’t about the video (which I can’t watch, even with VPN ), but I basically became a Beatles fan because of the ‘1’ album, and I’m kind of upset that Strawberry Fields Forever isn’t on it.

Well it never went to #1 in the charts, so they couldn’t really include it, could they?
If you wait long enough maybe they’ll release a “2” album… and then maybe a “17” …

Wonderful footage, and very interesting to hear Paul’s vocal at the correct speed/pitch and isolated!

I have always wondered about one brief snippet in Penny Lane , who the singer was.
It’s the part “in summer” right before “meanwhile back…”
The “meanwhile back…” part is clearly Macca, but the “in summer” part has always sounded like Lennon to me.
Anyone have any thoughts or info?
It would be a bit strange for Lennon only to sing two words on a song, but then the Beatles did some strange (and beautiful) things during this time period.

To me, the songs represent the mood of the places. I hear SFF and imagine John sitting quietly in a tree watching over the girls below, like a lazy sunny afternoon dream, with his mind wandering onto random thoughts. Penny Lane is busy and noisy in comparison and the song seems to reflect that very well.
Or, am I the only one crazy enough to see it that way?
I also think that both work in their own ways and defy comparison as a result. PL was very Paul and SFF was very John. They both work very well that way.

I prefer SFF, but Penny Lane is still very good.I hope I’m not coming across as hating Paul McCartney , I’m just trying to explain why so many people see John as superior.
How are you explaining it?
