Haha yeah, but did he really use the word “metal”? I know he referred to it as “pretty fuckin’ heavy” but I always wonder if maybe he meant “heavy” as in deep/weighty/profound etc.  To my ears, “Ticket To Ride ” sounds nowhere as close to heavy metal as did the Kinks’ “You Really Got Me” which predated it by a year…or even Howlin’ Wolf’s “How Many More Years”, from 1951!

To my way of thinking, loud, fuzzy distorted guitar is the crucial ingredient, and the Beatles didn’t really add that component before Rubber Soul .

On Anthology John does use the words “Heavy Metal” to describe Ticket To Ride , but in those days they would have had different concepts of what music genres were. I don’t really buy into the whole genre thing anyway – it’s all subjective.

To be perfectly clear, I’ve heard rumors of Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 Mvt. 3 to influence most metal songs. It could very well be the first metal song. Btw, Paul’s drumming on Dear Prudence is underrated. The whole song is.

I totally agree. Maybe one of John’s best, dare I say. Paul’s performance is really exceptional in my opinion.

I don’t know about overrated, but as far as underrated goes, I would say that Girl and I’m Looking Through You deserve a bit more attention. Masterpieces, both of them!a-hard-days-night-george-8

Actually, I think the only people who underrate Paul’s “Dear Prudence ” drumming are those who are convinced it’s actually Ringo!

Paul: Yeah well… first of all, we’re bringing out a ‘Stamp Out Detroit’ campaign.

Hi guys, long time lurker, first time poster here.

Overrated:

Come Together . I’m starting to appreciate it more, but way overplayed.

Love Me Do . A good song, but so basic it bores me to tears.

I Am The Walrus . Another great tune, but I feel people try to over-interpret this song WAY too much.

Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds . See above reason.

Strawberry Fields Forever . One of their best, but also too many people trying to squeeze hidden messages out of it.

All You Need Is Love . Give me a break, seriously.

Underrated:

Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da . One of the most fun songs ever written. Paul’s lyrics are great, and John’s piano playing sounds awesome, too.

I’ve Just Seen A Face . Just a great, westernish sounding tune. Heard it for the first time in Across The Universe .

I Saw Her Standing There . Fantastic rocker from their early days.

-When I’m 64. A fun, slow tune sung very tongue in cheek. Love it!

Help !. Even though some say it’s overrated, I still don’t think it gets the recognition it deserves as possibly the best song John ever wrote.

Eleanor Rigby . People seem to forget about this one, but I think it’s one of their most powerful songs.

Magical Mystery Tour . Why don’t they play this on the radio more?

Sgt. Pepper ‘s Lonely Hearts Club Band/With A Little Help From My Friends . Go Ringo! The best song duo in history. They don’t play it enough, either.

Nothing I love more than "waking up to the sound of music…"

“Overrated” if that’s really possible: The Long And Winding Road is kind of boring, Penny Lane is a little too clean, but I suppose that’s what Paul wanted, Eight Days A Week is kind of, I don’t know it’s a pleasant enough song but it doesn’t really sound like The Beatles to me, Lady Madonna has never done very much for me either I guess.

Ok now onto the fun stuff, those underrated Beatle hits: Hey Bulldog , All Together Now , It’s All Too Much , I absolutely love the bass line of What Goes On , and that harmony of Lennon/McCartney where they just go OOOOOOO, OOOOOOO has to be the best sound ever recorded, period. I love the harmony on Octopus’s Garden , The Inner Light is pretty catchy for an Indian type song. And of course, the most underrated of all YOU KNOW MY NAME (Look Up The Number), it’s just pure Lennon/McCartney fun! I actually think almost all of Rubber Soul outside of Norweigen Wood, In My Life , Nowhere Man , and maybe Michelle are all underrated songs. Those are all incredible songs, just none are what most Beatle fans would call underrated. But those “filler” songs like You Won’t See Me and I’m Looking Through You are some of my favorite Macca songs. And I’m sorry, I don’t like to judge other posts, but someone actually thinks In My Life is overrated? That song is perfection! John sounds perfect, sweet and sentimental. But to each their own.a-hard-days-night-john-1

Hello, lurker here finally deciding to chime in with a couple of picks:

Underrated:

This Boy – An early song, simple but beautiful with gorgeous close harmonies.  And John does an awesome solo!

Old Brown Shoe – I’m with several other posters on this one.  Actually, George’s songs in general I think are underrated compared to the Lennon/McCartney catalog.

Good Day Sunshine – Sure, it’s lightweight, but it’s so bright and poppy and cheerful that it always makes my day whenever I hear it.

Overrated:

Here There And Everywhere – Just too sappy and kind of blah in my opinion.

All You Need Is Love – Ugh.

And honestly?  For me, most of Sergeant Pepper is overrated.  Sure, groundbreaking, brilliant, blah blah blah, but in my ears this one just hasn’t aged as well as most Beatles albums (But then, it does have Day in the Life, which is one of my all-time favorite songs period, so I suppose that balances it out a bit).

Overrated: “Can't Buy Me Love.” Please. I liked it a lot the first twelve times I heard it. In my eyes, it's not really a gem. More like sparkly costume jewelry.

Underrated: “I Want To Tell You .” My second favorite song on Revolver , after “For No One .” It's better (to me) than “Taxman .” My mother disagrees.

If I seem to act unkind, it's only me, it's not my mind that is confusing things.

Overrated: “Yesterday .” I hear way too much of it. It's not even that good(to me, of course!).

Underrated: “I've Just Seen a Face.” I think it's a much better song than “Yesterday ,” both lyrically and musically. Listening to it makes me feel really excited.

Sorry for the triple post! But since my last post was over six months ago, I don't really care.

Overrated: “All You Need Is Love .” It just doesn't feel like a “real” song. (Note that I put “real” in quotes. Examples of John's “real” songs: “Help !” “Nowhere Man ,” etc.) It feels more “commissioned.” But I do like the lyric “There's nowhere you can be that isn't where you're meant to be.” See, mom? I was meant  to be on this Forum!

Underrated: “Maxwell's Silver Hammer” and “Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da .” Seriously, people. Just because they're “granny sh**” doesn't mean they're bad songs. Plus, can't you let the fun factor take over? (“People” doesn't refer to anyone in particular. It's just that apparently these two songs are on a lot of “least favorite” lists.)

9… that means that I have license to say whatever I want! a-hard-days-night-john-1

I agree on the Underrated part, but, All You Need Is Love ? Can't agree there.

Overrated – Penny Lane . Good song and all, but I think pairing it with Strawberry Fields improves its stock.

Underrated – Cry Baby Cry , doesn't really stand out at first on the White Album , but I'm a sucker for John's sensitive stuff. The lyrics are just beautiful, the duchess of Kircaldy part always brings a smile to my face. Ringo has some pretty nasty fills, the bass line is really good and John's incredible rhythm guitar, which unfortunately gets drowned out a bit as it goes on but it completely drives the song.

Also the anthology version of Norwegian Wood , that has to be the weirdest song ever. I think Paul's harmony is more effective on that version than the actual record, it seems like John sort of out kicked his coverage on Rubber Soul , if that makes sense.

By the way I think I have the perfect amount of posts for awhile…peace to the Middle East. heart
