What comes to mind spontaneously:
Overrated:
In My Life (GREAT song, but not one of the best for me, and wasn’t it once rated the best song ever or something like that?)
Abbey Road – Side 2 after Because (Some good songs, like You Never Give Me Your Money , Golden Slumbers and The End , some decent snippets and the boring Sun King , plus it doesn’t really build a medley until maybe the last three, it’s a loose collection of songs and snippets, and even if it had this big, big structure for me it probably still wouldn’t be near my top 10)
Love Me Do (Their first single, widely known but a cookie-cutter goody pop song. THIS is granny music, sounds like an application to be perfect son-in-law)
I Want To Hold Your Hand (Similar. The composition can be used in stunning ways like seen/heard in the film AtU, but the Fab’s song is just too well-behaving pop)
She Said She Said (One of Revolvers top songs for many, for me just a very good track among others)
Underrated – Songs that are among my favourites which I rarely see that high
Norwegian Wood (even better for me than most people give it credit)
Underrated – Songs that I think are better than people give them credit
Revolution 9 (for the complete experience of the White Album , when listened to it the way you would read a book or watch a film I think it’s essential, adding an unexpected finale)

Great exhaustive-as-usual writeup there, Jules, , but the writing and recording of “The Word ” occurred a year before the whole Jesus controversy; so the “good and the bad books” line had nothing to do with that. There was no attempt at “fake edginess” in that regard.

Oh you’re so right. I don’t know where I got this idea that John had written The Word in response to the protesters but I’m just realizing the dates don’t make any sense at all so excuse me. I still have many issues with the instrumental though.

Haha, I like that arrangement a lot, too! I think it’s a totally credible slice of early Anglo-funk, with those 7th chords and Paul’s amazing bass mobility. (In fact, we disagree on several of your “overrated” choices, but that’s normal! And I always appreciate your defense of your opinions!)

It’s not something I put a lot of thought into, but as far as your assessments go, I agree that “Long long” and “Hey Jude ” and “Guitar Weeps” are overloved, and “Look Up My Number” doesn’t get enough. And I love “Helter Skelter “, it’s great racket and a fantastic vocal. But on a basic level, I sometimes kinda think that the entire catalog is underrated!

Welcome Magill!
I would agree with Not A Second Time and Rocky Raccoon .
That said, at the time of its release, NAST got rave reviews from a classical music reviewer. But yea, since then it’s pretty much disappeared.
RR is considered by many to be fluff; I think it’s very creative. I put Lovely Rita in the same category.
I’m A Loser is not a great song – but a fascinating glimpse into Lennon’s mind.
I find Blue Jay Way lugubrious.
Mr. Moonlight has a terrific vocal. The skating rink organ kills it. Wonder whose idea that was.
You Can’t Do That is not one of my faves.
Other songs to include would be For No One , Hey Bulldog !, Things We Said Today , Because , I’ve Just A Face, PS I Love You , It Won’t Be Long , Julia , If I Fell …

I definitely agree with NAST, Because , IJSAF, and Lovely Rita –not so sure about the rest.
When I think of underrated Beatles songs that I cherish, two immediately come to mind: I’ll Get You and All My Loving . It also seems that Drive My Car doesn’t get as much love as it deserves, which surprises me a little.
"And life flows on within you and without you"
"I guess I just wasn't made for these times"

@Magill
From Me To You was a big hit at the time – but was then totally overshadowed by She Loves You and I Want To Hold YH. It has since essentially disappeared, so I don’t know that it is highly rated enough to qualify as over-rated!
As for Michelle , it wasn’t even released as a single, so clearly no one at the time considered it over-rated it. But then suddenly, it won a Grammy for Song of the Year (or Record). It’s also been covered by many, many recording artists, suggesting a pretty wide appeal.
So yes, it’s since become rated high enough for someone like Magill to consider it over-rated!!!

I should ask to have you banned.
Love the energy of FMTY, it’s a perfect marriage of vocals and melody. John really belts this one out. I feel like he really means it.

I’ll Follow The Sun definitely an underrated song on a typically underrated album. Love John and Paul’s harmonies on this one and the song is so pure.

Totally agree. Love this song; so simple and yet so poignant.

Time changes, opinions change.
From Me To You is a good song, but it’s just a tiny bit overrated. Timothy will get me banned if I say anything more about it.
Think For Yourself is underrated, as any songs with a C7 are really good.
Michelle is better than I thought.
I’ve Just Seen A Face is beautiful
Here There And Everywhere should be as popular as she loves you!

Maybe so, Cake… maybe so.
Though I still stand by old me’s opinion. Quite rare, that is!
I’ve been thinking about this. I’d have to say Things We Said Today would be the Beatles’ most overrated song. At least songs like Hey Bulldog has a cult following, TWST is so rarely talked about.

Some more from me
Underrated:
Rocky Raccoon , like mentioned before, is very underrated. Rocky was shot by ol’ dan and you guys sleep on him! Poor rocky. Oh, and I, Magill, am mentioned! Yeah, I cheated on rocky! Just wanted to be clear that this is one of my all time favourites.
Piggies is a favourite of fellow forumist Starr Shine, and is also a favourite of good ol’ Lil Nancy (me). I love the little riff that plays after “goes on around.” It sounds like a song I would write, especially the “What they need’s a damn good whacking” part.
Fixing A Hole is one of my favourite Paul songs, and i’m a Paul guy (just kidding, i’m a george guy), because he created me. He created Magill. And this song is so good. One of the reasons why I love sergeant pepper.
I Me Mine deserves more love than it gets.
Lady Madonna may be a #1 hit, but it seems like you guys don’t like it as much as the other #1’s. Same goes with The Ballad Of John And Yoko .
Here There And Everywhere is my favorite Revolver song, though I never heard of it until I got Revolver on vinyl. It should be a #1 hit!
Hold Me Tight ‘s intro is just great. The “dun-dun-dun-dun-dun” is the best part of with the Beatles.
Overrated:
Well, I’m gonna get hated for this.
Love Me Do is a classic. It’s a great song, yet, Please Please Me is better.
2 songs are overrated for the same reason. She loves you and I Want To Hold Your Hand . Both one of the Beatles most popular songs ever, they’re just a bit overrated. Still great songs though.
And that’s all of them. Not too much overrated ones.
